I didn't care about his gaze; when it came to matters of life and death, I scrutinized every detail. After all, human lives were at stake.
Fat Ma was even more so, completely disregarding that person as he rushed forward, eagerly searching for treasures. This place resembled a corridor, with a lifeless body lying motionless on the ground, wooden splinters scattered everywhere.
The expression on the deceased's face was one of horror; his mouth was slightly agape, eyes rolled back with a bulging appearance, and his complexion had lost all color. It looked like he had died of fright. Although I had already formed a judgment in my mind, I kept it to myself.
"Could this person have died from poisoning?" one member of the team speculated.
"That's possible. Didn't these two gentlemen just have a similar experience?" he said, pointing at me and the Fat Ma, his tone laced with mockery.
Since arriving here, the Fat Ma had been bending over and searching around. However, upon hearing someone mention him—especially in such a sarcastic manner—Fat Ma felt a surge of anger. He straightened up, turned around, and shouted, "Old Sun, don't stop me! I'm going to teach this bastard a lesson today."
Fat Ma's sudden outburst stunned everyone, especially me; I hadn't even processed what was happening yet.
"Old Sun, don't stop me," he said while giving me a knowing look.
The person who had mocked us earlier noticed how easily Fat Ma was provoked and saw the Fat Ma's imposing figure. This wasn't a joke; fear crept in as he contemplated slipping away.
I was still somewhat lost in thought and didn't grasp the situation immediately. Meanwhile, Fat Ma continued to give me that look as if someone owed him two hundred and fifty bucks. I remained dazed.
Seeing that things were escalating, Fat Ma cursed under his breath and prepared to get serious.
At that moment, a muddy figure nudged me.
This jolt brought me back to reality; it felt as if Tathagata Buddha had touched my head, instantly enlightening me. I instinctively took on the role of the neighbor's Second Aunt, trying to mediate between them and blocking the Fat Ma ’s path, thus diffusing the tension.
Fat Ma finally felt a sense of satisfaction; he had not let anyone down. However, he needed to put on a good show. With a mighty swing of his arms, saliva flying everywhere, he was determined to confront the man who had dared to challenge him.
Those who had mocked us earlier were now clearly intimidated by Fat Ma.
I struggled to hold Fat Ma back, feeling as if all his strength was directed at me. At that moment, I felt like a mute person suffering in silence, and could only whisper, " Fat Ma, that's enough."
Seeing that things were getting out of hand, Fat Ma decided to ease off after hurling a few more insults, and the situation finally calmed down.
Ni Ren and Old Ghost stood nearby, watching the spectacle unfold while I felt utterly exhausted.
"Today, I won't hold it against you," he said, and without wasting any time, he began searching around. Based on the shouts from earlier, he speculated that the treasure must be something valuable.
"Old Sun, come here."
After putting on such a performance with Fat Ma, I was completely worn out. Just as I caught my breath for less than a minute, Fat Ma called out to me.
"What do you want?"
I understood the little schemes Fat Ma was plotting in his mind; after all these years, who didn't know each other well?
I didn’t hesitate and walked over, bringing Ni Ren and Old Ghost along with me.
The others had seen Fat Ma's explosive temper and were reluctant to approach him, so they scattered. Now, in this corridor located somewhat centrally within the space, there were only the four of us left. The corridor stretched for about a hundred meters or so.
At that moment, the face of the deceased person suddenly regained some color, turning slightly red.
"Is he not dead?" I immediately crouched down, checking the man's breath and then his heartbeat; both had ceased. The physiological signs confirmed that he was no longer alive.
"Old Sun, what are you staring at a corpse for? Come over here and get to work," Fat Ma urged me.
I responded and stepped forward.
"Old Sun, let's each take a side and search."
"Search for what?"
"Of course, we're looking for valuable treasures. And you two, Old Ghost and Mud Man, stop standing there like wooden dolls."
Fat Ma's mind was remarkably clear at that moment. He assigned Mud Man and me to one group while Old Ghost followed him. We would search in opposite directions along the corridor. Everyone accepted this arrangement without objection.
We quickly set our plan into motion, leaving the corpse on the ground unattended.
The corridor was not completely straight; it had a certain curvature in the direction Mud Man and I were heading. It felt as if this corridor might collapse at any moment. The wooden structure of the ceiling had suffered varying degrees of damage.
Some debris hung precariously, ready to fall at any time. Dust accumulated, and every step we took sent more dust cascading down. The tree holes chewed out by woodworms caused wood shavings to flutter down intermittently.
As I cleared away the debris, I would sometimes be overwhelmed by a fit of coughing when a cloud of dust fell.
Strangely, the ceiling of this corridor was particularly deep, indicating that the angle of this triangular structure was quite small. Yet, the corridor itself was not very narrow; it could accommodate four or five people walking side by side. Suddenly, I noticed something even stranger: it appeared that this corridor had two ceilings, with two triangular structures stacked on top of each other, although the middle part was not very distinct.
However, the structure seemed quite solid; it had not collapsed after all these years.
As I walked with the Mud Man, my gaze was drawn to the roof above us.
Suddenly, a dark shadow fell from the ceiling. In an instant, my pupils dilated, and my brain barely had time to react before my body instinctively dodged. In the process of evading, I pulled the Mud Man aside.
The Mud Man was quick on his feet; after realizing what was happening, he managed to avoid the danger just in time.
Once the shadow hit the ground, it moved swiftly and vanished from our sight. Before I could fully comprehend what had just happened, it was already gone. I scanned the area anxiously, a sense of foreboding rising within me.
The Mud Man remained vigilant, reminding me to be cautious.
“If I’m not mistaken, the person who died was also killed by that thing,” he said in a low voice.
Given the current situation, it was very likely.
My sense of caution intensified.
That shadow moved quickly; we could easily find ourselves in danger without warning. More importantly, I had no idea what that shadow was.
Suddenly, I thought of Fat Ma and their predicament. I turned around to warn them, but just as I did, an unexpected event occurred.
