I felt Li Tiancheng's arm tighten around my neck, causing me to cough a few times involuntarily.
"What do you mean?" Li Tiancheng frowned.
"Heh, you should remember, right? The day you disguised yourself as Inspector and came to the lab was the same day that new Particle Accelerator was first activated."
Li Tiancheng nodded.
"Fang Yan crossed over first, and I waited until the experiment was over to find my chance," Yu Xia scoffed. "It seems that the device caused unforeseen effects on our crossing; this woman's memories got mixed up with those of that Female Scientist."
No! That's not true! I don't have any memories of the thief Fang Yan! You must be mistaken!
"Hey, she hasn't contacted me for days, so I suspected something went wrong with her. Tonight, I originally planned to kill her to silence her, but then I brought her here out of a stroke of luck to try and extract the account password," Yu Xia sighed. "She's no longer useful to us, neither is anyone else."
"That may not be the case," Li Tiancheng furrowed his brow.
"Stop being stubborn, Officer Li, you've already lost," Yu Xia said with a mocking smile. "You think capturing her means you have leverage over me? This woman knows nothing; as long as I don’t commit any more crimes, your leads will dry up."
Li Tiancheng remained silent, slowly pulling back the safety on his gun.
"I'm sorry for taking up so much of your time; it's about time I left," Yu Xia slipped behind the wall. "This woman is yours now; at least you'll have something to report."
No! Things aren't clear yet! I'm innocent! You can't just leave like this!
Li Tiancheng yanked me forward two steps, finally seeing what was behind the wall.
There stood Yu Xia, who had somehow put on a makeshift device on her head, with two smooth electrodes aimed at her temples.
He waved lightly, possibly at me or at Li Tiancheng, and then pressed a button.
After a burst of intense electrical noise, Yu Xia remained standing in place.
"Has he... I mean, has his consciousness already crossed over?" Even though I knew the outcome, I still looked at Li Tiancheng with a glimmer of hope.
"No, he can't leave," Li Tiancheng said as he put away his gun.
What?
I was a bit taken aback.
I saw Yu Xia blink, his eyes filled with confusion.
"Nice to see you again, Great Thief Yu," Li Tiancheng said as he stepped in front of Yu Xia, gently taking the knife from his hand and throwing it to the ground. He then removed the device from Yu Xia's head and handcuffed him.
"Why... why did it fail..." Yu Xia mumbled to himself. "I was so close..."
"Do you know why? The reinforced concrete structure is naturally an electromagnetic shield..."
"No! The rebar in the building can't affect the crossing over! It has worked fine all those times before!" Yu Xia's face twisted in rage, unwilling to accept this result.
"Do you think I wasted so much time talking to you for no reason?" Li Tiancheng pointed to the ceiling. "Normally, it wouldn't be a problem, but what about in unusual circumstances? Modifying the exposed rebar took my companions quite a bit of effort!"
As he spoke, another person approached us. Li Tiancheng nodded at the newcomer and handed Yu Xia over to him.
After completing these tasks, Li Tiancheng turned his gaze toward me.
My heart suddenly skipped a beat.
Am I going to be captured too?
To my surprise, Li Tiancheng smiled at me and said, "Do you remember I told you I was here to help you?"
I nodded, still not quite understanding what was happening.
"We have already captured the real thief, Fang Yan, and you are innocent."
I let out a sigh of relief but couldn't help but ask for more details.
Li Tiancheng moved a broken chair for me and dragged another one over for himself to sit down.
"The thief Fang Yan didn't erase your consciousness; she was just hiding in your body to evade capture. But later, when I went to the Physical Research Institute, they realized they had been exposed. So, they decided to cross over into another parallel universe—this one—to escape."
"You know what happened next. There was a problem during Fang Yan's crossing, and part of your memories got mixed up with hers." Li Tiancheng sighed. "But what Yu Xia doesn't know is that you both crossed over. The innocent you came here, while Fang Yan was captured in another parallel universe."
"So," Li Tiancheng clapped his hands, "thank you for your cooperation. We will send you back to your original timeline. I hope this experience won't give you nightmares."
I felt the oppressive weight on my chest lift away, my body felt like it had just run a marathon, sore and unable to move.
Li Tiancheng pulled out a device from his pocket, similar to the one Yu Xia had used before but more refined, exuding a sense of technological beauty.
"That one is homemade," Li Tiancheng said proudly. "Ours is mass-produced."
I reached out to take the device, carefully securing it on my head and adjusting the two electrodes so they aligned with my temples.
Li Tiancheng adjusted the instrument parameters and handed the remote control to me.
"Just press this button, and you can go home," he said.
I took it seriously, thought for a moment, and then embraced Li Tiancheng with my weak legs.
"Thank you," I told him.
Then, I pressed the button.
A pulse of electric current radiated from the electrode, stimulating my brain's center and launching my consciousness into another time and space.
When I opened my eyes again, I found myself back in the office of the Physical Research Institute.
I didn't rush to go home; instead, I looked at my reflection in the mirror.
Young, capable, with medium-short hair, a mid-level position in the institute—it's a decent identity.
I returned to my office, skillfully opened the Dark Web, and typed in a string of commands. Just before hitting enter, I hesitated for a moment and sighed.
"I should buy some physics books another day," I murmured to myself as I left the office with a light step, humming a tune.
