"What the hell is this?"
"It seems like we've been discovered!"
"Not just seems, we've definitely been targeted."
A few people shouted anxiously. With no other options, they could only sprint away. It was unwise to engage so many Carrion Sand Turtles in battle. Freyr was at the back, carefully checking the revolver's cylinder. He fired three shots behind him, producing a particularly unusual sound.
"Hiss~"
Aside from that, there was nothing else. The sounds of the Sand Turtles surged like ocean waves. Even with Freyr's original strength, seeing this would surely make him break into a sweat and turn to flee. After firing three shots, a thick scent of blood immediately filled the air.
Predators are extremely sensitive to the smell of blood and flesh; even the flesh of their own kind would not be spared as they lunged forward to tear it apart. At least two Sand Turtles were hit by his shots. When he glanced back, he saw those Sand Turtles forming a circle, eagerly tugging at the bodies of their own kind.
Freyr dared not look any longer. He tightened his grip and accelerated forward. They no longer needed to pretend to be calm; wherever they went, groups of Sand Turtles would emerge from the ground. The number of Sand Turtles was at least in the hundreds or thousands, and this was still their territory. To protect their domain, they would do anything.
To escape the territory, they had to quickly break through in one direction. The calls of the Sand Turtles could travel far, much like how a lone wolf leader's howl would summon a pack of companions. The dark tide behind them surged rapidly; compared to before, their numbers had expanded significantly. The ground continued to tremble as one Sand Turtle after another crawled out with narrowed red pupils. However, as the first Sand Turtle began to rise hazily, it was trampled underfoot by the fleeing group, only to soon join in the pursuit.
After running for a short while, suddenly, the black tide of the Sand Turtle Tribe abruptly halted its advance. Freyr was surprised and quickly turned around, only to find that each Sand Turtle was retracting its head and retreating, timidly backing away like mice encountering a fat cat.
"Ah!"
Freyr snapped back to reality just in time to collide with the person in front of him. Froth had suddenly stopped in his tracks. They raised their fingers, and with dazed eyes, shakily pointed straight ahead. However, on the other side, Aeros also let out a sharp scream.
Freyr felt puzzled; he wanted to mumble something but suddenly sensed a threat. There was an undercurrent of heat approaching from ahead, like a rhythmic breathing echoing in his ears. As that shadow undulated, the ground trembled continuously; sand swirled downward as massive spiral shapes began to emerge from beneath.
Looking ahead, he saw an entity as dark as ink lying flat against the earth—this was merely where this divine beast rested and rejuvenated itself. Its crimson pupils flickered like light bulbs as it exhaled warm breaths that reverberated around them. Its roar resonated like thunder; this divine beast had fully awakened.
The crowd was stunned, gazing at the complete awakening of the Sand Turtle Tribe's overlord. Aeros suddenly exclaimed, "Ah, we always thought it was just a sand and stone mountain."
"This mountain is the habitat of this giant turtle; I should have realized it sooner." Freyr glanced back at the thick black tide that had receded a kilometer away. He took a few steps forward to observe the terrain from a safer distance.
"Die, die, die!"
At that moment, gunfire erupted from the other side. A man was firing a rifle at the overlord. Although the bullets had no effect on its tough skin, hitting its eye caused a roar that tore through the air. The man growled as he bit down on his last bullet, slowly pushing it into the rifle's chamber.
"This is bad; there's only one Glory Round left. Am I going to die too?" he murmured softly.
"It looks like there's someone over there," Duan Shuai exclaimed in surprise.
Aeros pulled out his weapon, an intricately designed antique machine gun. Its power was formidable, and its firing rate was stable. With his steady aim, he could ensure every bullet hit its target even while running. However, its only drawback was its short range, preventing him from shooting from too far away.
A wicked smile spread across Aeros's face as he swiftly pulled back the bolt. "Let him know there are still people here; it's not time to die yet. Leave the rest to me."
Duan Shuai froze for a moment before a loud rumbling filled his ears. Amidst the chaotic noise, everything became muddled. He slowly took out his weapon—a cold weapon—a crossbow adorned with strange runes. He had no idea what those runes meant, but he knew that any weapon capable of being part of his arsenal was far from ordinary.
Drawing back the bowstring, Duan Shuai had only three crossbow bolts at his disposal. They looked simple enough, but the tips made of feather were sharp and glimmered faintly in the darkness. Without hesitation, he adjusted the crossbow to aim directly at the overlord.
With a swift motion, a sharp bolt shot forth, accompanied by a blue arc of light. The iron tip of the bolt transformed into a bluish hue as it sliced through the air. The feathered projectile struck deep into the overlord's tough skin with tremendous force.
In that instant, one of the Corpse Turtle King's legs twisted violently to one side. The bolt hadn't completely penetrated; a faint blue glow emanated from the wound as the blue material reacted with its blood. The Corpse Turtle King let out a pained roar.
"It seems effective; let's try another one."
Duan Shuai suddenly felt that this was a good opportunity, but just as he raised the crossbow to shoot, a figure blocked the trajectory. Fortunately, he quickly retracted the force, preventing the string of the crossbow from being released, which stopped Feather from being shot directly; otherwise, the consequences would have been dire.
"Get out of the way! Are you trying to die?" Duan Shuai shouted angrily.
"No, look at the Corpse Turtle King’s condition," Freyr said quietly.
Freyr silently gazed at the Corpse Turtle King. Under Freyr's warning, Duan Shuai lowered the crossbow and looked up at the faintly glowing area on its abdomen. With rhythmic breaths, the dark green light emitted softly as the stripes moved up and down.
Turtle's Breath...
"The Corpse Turtle King has lived for over a thousand years and has consumed many corpses. It is using corpse energy to heal its injuries. The Corpse Turtle King's ability, Turtle's Breath, clearly indicates that our weapons cannot kill such a monster. If you had continued attacking just now, it would have completely enraged it. The way to kill it is to use an Alchemical Weapon to pierce through its hard Exoskeleton. However, while your crossbow is also an Alchemical Weapon, it is merely a low-grade one. Odin's Crossbow only produces temporary paralysis," Freyr explained calmly.
"Wow!" Froth exclaimed in surprise.
"Ah! We're going to die!" Aeros shouted.
At that moment, the Corpse Turtle King opened its mouth full of sharp teeth, and a loud explosion suddenly erupted. The head of the Corpse Turtle King tilted back without sustaining direct injury. It quickly lifted one leg, and a shadow moving in the darkness stumbled and fell to the ground.
The Corpse Turtle King lowered its head and opened its mouth wide, swallowing that figure whole.
"That person seems to be dead? We can't save him, but he died honorably," Freyr said indifferently.
The stripes on the Corpse Turtle King's body lit up like glowing light bulbs, dazzling and causing tears to stream from its eyes.
In the intense light, Freyr slowly opened his eyes and then saw a shadow rapidly approaching. Heavy footsteps followed, creating a shockwave that sent him flying. His companions were momentarily stunned into silence; surely they couldn't be completely speechless?!
Gazing wide-eyed, the light gradually dimmed. At a height of three meters, a wriggling foot twitched in the air. Suddenly, a shadow fell from above, and looking down, it was an ancient Crossbow. This Odin's Bow was a low-tier Alchemical Weapon, and hatred drove the Corpse Turtle King to see Duan Shuai as its enemy.
His companion was killed instantly.
A gunshot from a Sniper Rifle echoed in his ear, followed by the deep roar of machine gun fire. However, both sounds lasted only a short while before a series of agonized screams began to resonate.
It seemed as if a warm liquid was drizzling down from above. Freyr lowered his head until a drop of warmth hit his face. He suddenly raised his head and fired the Odin's Bow. The dark blue arrowhead revealed itself as it scraped against the ground. He took a moment to prepare the arrowhead, bringing forth an Alchemical Arrow.
Opening his eyes, he saw a large mouth filled with sticky saliva and sharp teeth slowly descending upon him. In that fleeting moment before death, a series of explosive sounds erupted from his arm, and his entire skeleton underwent violent deformation. The muscles on his body twisted like wriggling earthworms, and everything around him faded into a dull gray. The murderous intent in his mind boiled violently like oil splashing in a hot pan.
The blue Light Spot flickered on the arrowhead as he pulled the trigger of the Crossbow.
In that fleeting moment, a sharp sound cut through the air. In the blink of an eye, it pierced through the chin and embedded itself inside. The Corpse Turtle King's fury surged; dark blue light spilled from its mouth, and its eyelids suddenly became heavy.
Freyr gasped lightly as he loaded the last Alchemical Arrow into the Crossbow. "Whoosh," an explosion rang out. This time, the arrowhead penetrated beneath the soft shell of the turtle, black blood began to spurt out like ink from the wound. The Corpse Turtle King lay peacefully without letting out a roar.
"Whoosh..."
At that moment, Freyr's muscles twisted in despair. He fell to the ground in pain, but in the next instant, a swirling drowsiness filled his mind with an overwhelming urge to sleep, leaving him unable to control his limbs accurately.
However, those creatures that had initially shown signs of retreat began to slowly close in again. A brutal roar erupted, carrying with it an intense killing intent as shadows surged forward one after another.
