At that moment, Su Qian deliberately leaned against Freyr's shoulder. Her earlier words had been intentionally provocative, aimed at seeing how he reacted to her teasing. In this world, only she could bully this man. However, it wasn't just that he was overly sensitive; perhaps he wasn't truly the best of men. Since returning from the hospital, he had transformed into someone else entirely. Yet this change brought her a comforting sense of ease; it felt wonderful to be alive and protected. 0

"Honey, are you planning to go out again after coming back this time? I think the home is quite stable now. You really don't need to go out and suffer like that. There are others who can handle those matters. You can just focus on your job interview at the company and earn a white-collar salary without anyone blaming you." 0

"I have no choice. I've accepted the Hunter Association's request to become a professional hunter. Even if I don't join the military, my ideals won't change. I promise you I'll come back more often when I can," Freyr replied, revealing his own struggles and thoughts. He couldn't tell his wife that this tranquility was merely temporary, that a greater disaster lurked behind the calm, like predators beneath a serene lake, watching their prey at the shore, waiting for the right moment to strike. 0

"The Hunter Association? Oh, that's the one that's constantly advertised! I didn't expect such an association to actually exist. I thought it was a scam! I've heard that becoming a hunter comes with many great benefits. I can't believe my husband can be a hunter too. Is it hard?" Su Qian said softly as she snuggled closer to him. 0

Freyr sighed as he took clothes out of his backpack and hung them on the rack one by one. "It's not really about whether it's hard or not. There are mission directives every week, some with high risks and others with more ordinary community activities." 0

The types of missions were generally similar, but if he were to take on missions mostly focused on exterminating pests and similar tasks, it would only worry his family. He chose to downplay the dangers involved, simplifying the tasks in his descriptions. Every mission carried its risks, but it was possible to avoid danger before it became apparent. 0

Overall, missions were never designed for hunters to die; they had specific objectives. When missions reached a certain level of difficulty, the most suitable hunters with the highest survival rates would be dispatched to ensure thorough completion of the tasks. Otherwise, missions that were guaranteed to result in death would simply gather dust on bulletin boards. 0

Freyr was still unaware of some hidden rules among hunters. The most lucrative missions were typically claimed by those at the highest ranks first. If he were to form his own team and go in first, it would depend on their Score ranking; those with lower Scores might find themselves constrained by these rules. Teams could only select appropriate missions as their rank increased; no team had the authority to bypass these fundamental regulations. 0

It didn't matter who was stronger; everything depended on the mutual efforts of teammates within the team. 0

This fairness reflected a team's values more than anything else. Perhaps the benefits of team building were proportional to the risks associated with missions; effort led to reward. Therefore, when Hunters accepted missions, even if everyone including the captain perished during execution, as long as one person survived, that individual would have the right to claim the rewards earned by the entire team. 0

The information Freyr gathered from Dute was limited to this extent. According to team-building levels, Dute had indeed become a hunter himself. Most of those who had wiped out large portions of enemy legions during battles were hunters doing commendable work—hunters so powerful they could rival well-trained and disciplined troops in strategy and even turn disadvantages into dominant positions on the battlefield, ultimately achieving remarkable results by defeating the First Red Dragon Army. 0

"Interesting," Freyr thought as he tightened his muscles in response to these revelations about such an association and its unknown masters. 0

Then came a scream from his wife beside him; it turned out he was gripping Su Qian's arm so tightly that tears streamed down her face from the pain. 0

Seeing Su Qian in tears, Freyr leaned in closer to make it easier for her to move, "Hey, that hurts! Who asked you to pull my ear? It's filthy." 0

With a playful grin, Freyr reached out and grabbed Su Qian's face, planting a kiss on her lips. "Hehe, just one kiss." 0

Su Qian struggled to break free, protesting, "Ouch, please! I'm ticklish; don't do that." 0

This night was destined to be unusual. While everyone else fell asleep, Freyr lay awake, trying hard to think through everything that had happened. It all felt like a replay of events—somewhat unreal—but everything he felt was not an illusion. Sometimes when he calmed his mind, he realized those situations seemed to be playing out again. He gazed at the familiar faces and events flashing before him. The doubts he once faced when confronting choices had long since vanished. He certainly knew how to choose now; after all, he had lived a lifetime more than others. 0

Such thoughts plagued him like a nightmare for many nights. Eventually, he decided not to think about it anymore. But now, in moments of idleness, those thoughts crept back into his mind as if they had found an opening. It turned out that he was so used to training that these thoughts wouldn’t surface during his routine. Realizing this, he walked into another room and went through a workout with the dumbbells and treadmill until exhaustion took over his mind. Only then did he obediently crawl back into bed and fall asleep. 0

After resting at home for several days, he immersed himself in ultimate training, striving for a significant breakthrough before the assessment period. Wouldn't that increase his chances of passing? He also planned that if he couldn't become a hunter, he wouldn't return to report back to his original unit. Perhaps this was how life should be lived. He would take the gifted Gene Pill and then face the Zerg in a life-or-death struggle once again. 0

Training at home with the equipment proved difficult for pushing his body to the ultimate limits. He was no longer the weakling he once was; in the eyes of ordinary people, he had grown into something monstrous. Professional wrestlers or boxers seemed like ants compared to him; their physical strength paled in comparison to his enhanced physique. Crushing bricks with bare hands was effortless for him. 0

On top of that was the terrifying Gene Chain, which amplified his explosive power, speed, and strength. It didn’t just enhance these attributes; it also unleashed an insatiable bloodlust—a primal urge for slaughter—rendering money and fame irrelevant. 0

A few days later, after finishing his morning workout and returning home with his backpack slung over his shoulder, he stepped outside. 0

"Wait!" Just as he exited the door, a girl rushed out with hurried footsteps, slightly breathless and filled with concern. "Are you leaving? You're going so soon! I don’t know when you'll be back." 0

"Foolish girl," Freyr replied with a smile as he gave her a thumbs up. "I'll be fine; I promise I'll come back to be with you." 0

Su Qian pretended to be indifferent, yet her worried gaze betrayed her. "Well, I won't stop you, because I know it wouldn't make a difference. If you want to do it, go ahead. Don't worry about us." 0

Freyr gently caressed his wife's face and planted a kiss on her forehead, smiling as he said, "Yeah, I know. I'm off now." 0

"I'll wait for you to come back," Su Qian whispered to herself as she watched her husband’s retreating figure. 0

At that moment, Freyr was about to embark on the path of becoming a hunter. Unless the sky fell, he would strive to overcome any difficulties. What challenges would the hunter assessment entail, and where would he find the teammates he envisioned? 0
