The Wanderer's Home, first floor.
A long line had already formed at the entrance. Inside, many people stood by the bulletin board.
Hunters came and went, and soon there were very few members of the Hunter Team lingering around.
Since it was Freyr's first time as a Commander, he was unaware that the competitive spirit among the Hunters was far greater than he had imagined. He still arrived early at the Wanderer's Home, but to his surprise, there were many others who had gotten up even earlier than him.
It was not yet 5:30 AM, and there were already numerous people standing at the entrance of the Wanderer's Home. Some individuals were rushing out after accepting their missions; the number of people was more than he had anticipated, and in an instant, half of them had already left.
The first floor looked much like it did during his recent visits, except that in the morning, there were a dozen more tablets. Each Hunter held a specially designed tablet, poking at the floating icons on the screen before exchanging it with Silver Granny at the bar.
They queued in order, and before long, they reached the back of the line.
"Oh, welcome! Come on in and select your missions using this tablet. Remember to keep the page for me to check later; I’ll help you register. Also, since this is your team's first mission, we have some beginner services available. Don’t forget to follow the instructions on the operating table."
Freyr politely took a tablet that was gently rising and falling on the bar table. As soon as he held it, the Virtual Screen suddenly lit up. He glanced through the menu on the table and read through the introductory details before decisively tapping into the mission section.
The Virtual Screen dimmed momentarily before displaying a new menu with options listed as Daily Tasks, Devil Mission, Nightmare Mission, Large Team Battle Mission, and Bounty Mission.
Among these, Daily Tasks would be randomly assigned to Hunter Teams and needed to be completed by each team. The rewards for these tasks were neither too low nor too high; completing them would at least cover meal expenses.
However, to exchange for valuable armor based solely on Daily Tasks would require completing thousands of them just to redeem an External Metal Skeleton Receiver. It was simply impractical for ordinary teams to focus solely on this type of task; it would be a waste of time. Those Hunters who only aimed to eat or pass time—perhaps older ones who could no longer fight—might consider trying just Daily Tasks.
The association did not stipulate that hunters were only to undertake Daily Tasks, but in reality, each Daily Task had a limited quota. They were not comparable to other missions that had strict time limits; in fact, failing to complete a task within its time limit would result in a penalty.
Even if you achieved your goals afterward, the association would still reward you with one-third of the rewards as recognition for your hard work. Alternatively, they might extend the time limit, with each extension being a predetermined duration. This meant you would still have the same amount of time to achieve your objectives, and the cost-effectiveness was quite high, as you only needed 0 Reward Points to exchange for an extension.
Most tasks involved helping with daily matters, and sometimes they required dealing with a few pests.
Additionally, given the current level of the Soldier-Level Hunter Team, it seemed that Devil Missions, Large Team Battle Missions, and Nightmare Missions had not yet been activated. Most tasks within Bounty Missions involved killing a specified number of Zerg s and returning with a limb from them to receive corresponding rewards.
However, due to their level, Bounty Missions also had difficulty restrictions. Looking at the descriptions of the tasks available, they primarily involved exterminating pests. While these insects were generally insignificant, certain parts of them were valuable for medicinal purposes. Thus, in terms of value, these tasks were indeed worthwhile; completing one Bounty Mission could yield significantly more Reward Points than executing five Daily Tasks.
As a result, hunters often preferred to select suitable tasks from Bounty Missions to fulfill their orders.
However, Bounty Missions disappeared in batches of dozens once completed. Once a Bounty Mission was taken, it would not reappear. In such cases, it became crucial to act quickly and efficiently.
Initially, one might think that tasks had to be assigned by administrators and must be executed as instructed. However, it turned out that hunters could choose tasks of appropriate difficulty themselves, ensuring they could complete them successfully.
Since task difficulty was self-selected, following this approach meant that often there was no need to rush back after completing a single mission.
By selecting several suitable tasks to execute together, it was common for a single batch of missions to sustain the team’s operations for several months.
Yet due to the constraints of the rules, hunters who failed to complete their tasks would find their various metrics and permissions restricted once they exceeded zero incomplete missions.
Thus, a positive image was created of many hunters who, while being completely self-sufficient, were still exceeding their mission requirements.
Ross glanced at the Daily Tasks nearby and felt somewhat disappointed. Having spent some time in other teams, he expected to receive a decent amount of Reward Points as usual. However, upon seeing the rewards displayed on the Virtual Screen this time, he felt quite let down overall.
It wasn't just the Daily Tasks; the rewards for Bounty Missions were also far lower than he had anticipated.
Perhaps this was due to not having full access to permissions. Freyr believed that there were already tens of thousands of tasks loaded in the Bounty Missions.
Even so, this was only the situation after setting permissions. If everything were fully unlocked, it was hard to imagine how many tasks would be available then.
Feeling somewhat disheartened, Freyr took the tablet and began selecting suitable missions. He wanted to take on multiple tasks at once to complete them all together.
However, when he selected more than ten tasks, a notification popped up on the Virtual Screen indicating that, given their current level, ten tasks were already classified as Ultimate.
Seeing this situation, he quickly deleted all his previous tasks and chose new ones. The time limit for the missions needed to be longer, allowing for mutual benefits. For instance, several tasks involved taking down different targets from the same insect creature.
The Reward Points for these missions could accumulate significantly. He aimed to select tasks that offered high rewards while being safe and having longer durations.
Of course, each Bounty Mission offered at least 70 Reward Points and could go up to over 100 Reward Points.
If he completed ten missions together, it could potentially yield over 1,500 Reward Points, which might be considered Ultimate at this stage.
In the early stages, 1,500 Reward Points could be seen as a considerable sum. However, they had previously spent over 1,000 Reward Points without much thought. Perhaps even that amount wouldn’t be enough to equip their firepower adequately. The only way forward was to upgrade their team’s capabilities. Once they reached Soldier-Level Hunter Team status, conditions should improve. By then, there would also be more vacancies in team construction to bring in stronger hunters, ensuring a better chance of completing missions successfully.
The immediate priority was to complete a mission, as finishing a task marked the transformation from a novice to something more.
Freyr had also noticed that there was a gap between the Novice Team and an ordinary Soldier-Level Hunter Team. They received special attention from the administrators, and in terms of strength, they were not yet capable of handling multiple missions.
The administrators had the authority to cancel their missions or suggest that they take on other, easier tasks.
"The missions available to us are the following ten. In fact, we only need to kill the specified number of three types of insects and collect their Targets to complete this mission. We can earn 10 Reward Points."
Indeed, 10 Reward Points was considered a high reward for a Soldier-Level Hunter Team so far. Without having tasted the experience of executing missions, they could not understand how challenging it was to hunt monsters.
While they were still adjusting and searching for suitable missions, they eventually realized that the 10 Reward Points were completely capped. No matter how they selected the ten tasks, the total would always be 10 Reward Points—no more, only less.
"It seems this is the maximum situation. I know some people in other teams have completed missions and earned far more Reward Points than we have here. But I hope everyone can trust us this once; there might still be a chance for us. The worst-case scenario is that we end up with just 10 Reward Points. Can it get any worse? Let's think positively."
Encouraged by Freyr, Ross, Parker, and Maggie gradually lifted their spirits from their despondency and formed a team to queue at the administrator's counter.
Once their missions were approved, Freyr submitted the page unchanged to Silver Granny. She frowned slightly and said, "Alright, taking on ten missions for your first task. I understand you're new to this. Normally, I would advise new Commanders not to take risks by focusing too much on quantity and how many Reward Points they can earn. In reality, it's important to start steadily; initial missions will be tough, and you might not complete many in six months. But remember, this is your best opportunity for growth; the learning process is what matters most. Do you understand? Once you pass this threshold, things won't be so difficult anymore."
Freyr quickly asked, "Do we need to cut down on some missions, Silver Granny?"
"No, that's not necessary. I've looked over the missions you've chosen; many involve organs from the same Zerg. The biggest advantage of these tasks is that killing one insect can yield multiple Reward Points. You’ve made a good choice here; it's suitable for your team's current strength. Just be careful not to encounter their territorial leader—that's a tough opponent. I'll give you leeway and approve your selection of 10 Bounty Missions." After a moment's hesitation, Silver Granny finally expressed her thoughts.
Those nearby breathed a sigh of relief; earning 10 Reward Points from ten missions was possible, but the process would undoubtedly be more complicated than it seemed at first glance.
"Thank you very much," Freyr said, bowing slightly to Silver Granny upon receiving her approval.
"You don't need to do that. It's what I should do. Just focus on serving the association well," Silver Granny replied with a gentle smile.
"We will," the remaining five chimed in unison.
Parker and the others immediately accepted their fate. Other teams might not want them, but securing a recognized position in the rebuilding team was already a rare opportunity. At least the Commander in front of them seemed to be saying good things.
Although the thought of replacing him lingered in their minds, they refrained from acting on it mainly because the Commander had not made any mistakes.
If there were any chance of error, they would not hesitate to kick him out of the Commander position.
Ross was determined to build the team into a paradise for men, creating a luxurious harem composed of beautiful Lolis. He believed no one would be as bold as he was in forming such a group.
Parker didn't want to think too much; his priority was to understand his Solar Fire Gene Endowment. After all, exchanging 4000 Reward Points for what he had before was something he could never have done. Therefore, the first thing he needed to do with this Gene Endowment was to find ways to enhance his strength, so he could contribute to the team and support the Commander wholeheartedly.
Relock, on the other hand, had no thoughts of his own and obediently followed Freyr like a sheep. His mode of action was simply to comply with Freyr alone.
At that moment, as Commander, Freyr's identity shifted from leaving the association to returning home, where he became directly subordinate to his boss.
He dared not entertain any thoughts of climbing over his boss or engage in any rebellious behavior.
After completing the mission, they received a Storage Container and a Brass Ring, one of the Alchemical materials. The Storage Container was designed to assist in storage and could be powered with a small amount of Elemental Power. This Storage Container would need to be returned later, so it was merely a borrowed tool to help collect the corpses of the insects. Any losses would have to be compensated at full value.
With this item, they could store as many insects as they killed.
Once the mission was completed, this item would also need to be returned.
Of course, they had seen similar Storage Containers at the Technology Building, where a single Brass Ring was worth 000 Reward Points.
It was a rare luxury. Even after completing this mission, they wouldn’t be able to redeem it immediately.
Moreover, only those with extravagant thoughts would consider it standard equipment.
After accepting the mission, Freyr and the others left Wanderer's Home. Their first task was to leave the city and search for the specified type of insect at the marked location.
Fortunately, after the development of the new city, there were many more missions available than before.
Otherwise, with so many people from the guild clearing missions, there used to be many who struggled to find tasks to execute. Now, however, with such an expansion in missions, they had a chance to showcase their skills. As for equipment, as long as they completed enough missions, they would eventually acquire something substantial.
They could even live a life of luxury, drinking milk and licking bottle caps.
