The two of them finished the coherent process in the Alchemical module analysis, and of course, everything outside regarding this incident was sealed off.
Although the mission of Wanderer's Home was temporarily halted, in reality, the Hunters also received a certain amount of rest. During this time, the association indirectly covered up the mistakes made by Wanderer's Home in other ways. The association absolutely could not allow any mistakes to be caught by the Hunters. Such matters had often been handled well in the past, but this time it was mainly due to issues with the administrator that things were exposed. As a result, the Gold and Silver Duo went missing, and the President came under further control from the Human Alliance. Once things were clarified further, it was likely that his position as President would be replaced.
In comparison, there were already too many people within the Human Alliance who could replace him; it was no longer an era dominated solely by Hilbert. This era had nurtured many excellent human strategists who were far more capable than this ineffective President who did not know how to solve problems rationally. Each candidate possessed strong Leadership Ability and was more suited for a leadership position.
While this seemed to be true, every year around this time, a large number of elites often fell from grace during elections. The position of President could not be easily taken over.
In the office, both of them sighed in unison.
"I never thought we would really be imprisoned like this. They should know that they can't truly confine us. I think they are testing us; rather than testing us... well, you know what I mean," Hilbert said.
"Yes, yes, I understand what you're getting at. It does seem like that; perhaps they are still observing us. I just received some secret news—the hospital faxed me that those children have been taken away. I'm starting to worry that they might use these individuals to extract information against us. I think at the annual alliance meeting, they will use this evidence to counter us. At that point, we need to figure out how to maintain our current stance without losing face."
The two of them should have been aware that they were being monitored at that moment, but there were no surveillance devices in the room. Although those visible Enforcers from the alliance seemed to have installed some listening devices and cameras inside, the information they gathered was ultimately useless. So they simply withdrew later on; regardless of how things turned out, if it wasn't true evidence, it would be problematic when it gradually got revealed during meetings.
Meanwhile, on the other side, several individuals who had been taken from the hospital were now awake. Freyr opened his eyes and saw white walls before him. When he tried to get up, he realized he was tightly restrained; only his head could poke out a little while the rest of his body was bound to a wooden board.
It looked like at least he was still in a hospital; they seemed to treat him as if he were a mental patient.
Just as he began to regain some awareness, a charming blonde woman entered through the door, looking very friendly.
"This hospital is really strange; why are you treating me like a mental patient?" Freyr responded.
"Uh, I'm sorry; they shouldn't have treated you this way. At that time, you were still in danger of losing your life and needed to be restrained for your own safety. You seemed to be shouting strange names in your sleep and thrashing about with your arms and legs. We had no choice but to bind you to prevent you from kicking and breaking the nutrient supply tubes or getting tangled up in them and causing unnecessary trouble for yourself. This was all done for your own good. However, now that you've Awakened, we can release you from here. I have the authority to do so," the lady said.
The lady calmly unfastened the restraints one by one, and Freyr reacted by sitting up on the bed, finally feeling a sense of calm wash over him.
He looked around the room. Earlier, it had seemed quite spacious, but now it appeared to be just big enough for a television and a bed, feeling rather cramped. He had never stayed in such a small room before, and he frowned as he endured everything around him.
Suddenly, something clicked in his mind. He recalled the time they had arrived at the base and lost consciousness, and upon noticing his clothes, he realized that everything he had been wearing had been swapped out. It was no wonder; he must have arrived at this hospital in a completely vulnerable state. What about the others? Where were his companions?
At this point, confusion began to settle in. This room seemed designed for only one person to sleep in, possibly separated from others. He had no idea where everyone else was, which left him feeling frustrated as he stared blankly at everything before him. He didn’t respond to her words; instead, he was lost in his own troubled thoughts.
“Do you understand what I’m saying?” The beautiful lady bombarded him with questions, a hint of fatigue showing in her smile. However, judging by the expression on Freyr’s face, it was clear that he hadn’t absorbed much of what she said. She shook her head in resignation.
“Um, sorry, can I leave now?” Freyr stood up from the bed, his mind filled with worries, desperate to escape this place.
The beautiful lady rubbed her forehead; it seemed he truly hadn’t listened to her earlier.
“Well, not yet. We need to conduct a series of comprehensive checks on your body first. You can only leave this room after the doctor gives you permission. Until then, you have plenty of time to think about your current situation, and you can only leave when I allow it,” she explained.
“Can I see my companions now? How are they doing?” he pressed on.
“Well, their conditions are gradually improving, but they aren’t recovering as quickly as you are. So for now, it’s not possible for you to see them,” the beautiful lady replied again.
“Oh? Is that so? That’s quite unfortunate,” Freyr responded.
“What you need right now is rest. If you feel uncomfortable or want something to eat, you can use the phone by your bed to contact us. And here’s a bell; if you press it when you're feeling unwell, a nurse will come to assist you. You can also make requests to them; if they are reasonable, we will do our best to accommodate you,” she added.
“Are you keeping me prisoner? I feel uncomfortable following your orders; it only makes me more suspicious of your intentions. You’re not part of the association—tell me who you are and what your purpose is.” Xuanhui suddenly paused for a moment and then realized something was off. His eyes narrowed with intensity as if he could see through any hidden motives. The lady felt a bit insecure under his focused gaze.
The more she lacked confidence, the more Freyr noticed the underlying issues. Beneath her beautiful facade lay thoughts that hinted at deception, suggesting that she had been misleading or soothing his emotions from the very beginning. Eventually, all disguises would be uncovered, but he hadn’t expected it to happen so quickly. The lady shook her head, a hint of guilt in her expression as she wrinkled her nose, and Freyr caught every detail in an instant. Of course, no one was naive or easily fooled.
"Is it really meaningful to ask so many questions? You should get more sleep. We need to think about your health, so don’t overthink things," Beautiful Lady said as she took a seat.
Freyr retorted fiercely, "Your insecure expressions have revealed your true self. I have every reason to believe you are lying."
"This is not something you should doubt. You know your current situation is precarious, so take care of yourself. Only then can you return to the battlefield in the future to fight for humanity's future. Your goal is to eliminate the Zerg and reclaim Earth’s dominance for humankind. This is not something you should concern yourself with right now; what you need to do is either rest obediently or be forced to rest. Don’t think about anything else, or I will inject you with Hypnotic Agent," Beautiful Lady responded.
"The more you say this, the more it confirms my suspicions are correct. I cannot be confined here, and you know that very well. So goodbye." Freyr swiftly rolled off the bed and jumped out, moving quickly. The lady reached out but only grasped at a fleeting shadow; there was no real contact. The door slammed shut behind him, locked from the outside with a password lock that exploded upon closure. This caused a short circuit in both locks, making it impossible to open even with a key.
He had managed to escape from that room; the presence of the woman inside made him feel extremely uncomfortable, and this was indeed a good way to flee.
"You will regret this," the woman's voice echoed through the door, clearly reflecting her emotional turmoil from their earlier conversation.
Unexpectedly, she erupted in anger and began pounding on the door, but it was futile; the reinforced door was not easily broken down. The girl was simply too naïve.
"Clearly, you have lied to me, and you must pay for it. Woman, I am leaving now. Goodbye," Xuanhui shouted at the door. His immediate priority was to get out of this cursed place. After stepping out of that room, he realized this place was far from ordinary; it didn’t resemble any hospital he knew of. It was a peculiar building with layered doors, each room housing different individuals who shared one common trait: they were all asleep. When they woke up, they would find themselves in a hospital, while others might think they were in their own rooms.
Some rooms appeared incredibly cozy; it was hard to suspect anything amiss. The only oddity was that those entering were not family members, which made things awkward. However, the clever lady would always consider herself the caretaker of this household and would encounter various people serving them as if they had memorized precise answers for every situation. Yet they underestimated human Thinking, especially when dealing with those who had served in the military and seen battle; ultimately, one could only truly trust oneself.
