They slowly approached the source of the sound, and everything around them changed. The sculptures that had been there moments ago now transformed into distinctive murals on the narrow walls, each depicting a figure holding a stick, chasing after some object.
The overall aspect of the murals did not showcase much detail, yet they were highly abstract, evoking a long string of imagination. The figures in the murals appeared quite bizarre; no one had ever seen a normal person with three pairs of arms. It seemed to reflect the history of the Catacomb owner's family, or perhaps it represented a belief expressed by their civilization.
Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense for such artworks to be displayed in such a secluded place. Clearly, there was much more to uncover within these walls.
Everyone focused intently on the murals, with the most striking figure being the one with three pairs of arms. The shock it evoked was profound, and its appearance was the most peculiar among all. Its skull was protruding, making even those with normal body shapes and appearances seem less impressive. At this point, they were eager to understand what kind of place they were in.
The sculptures placed in the narrow passage earlier seemed to mimic the forms depicted in the murals. Upon reflection, if they were not representations of the Catacomb owner, they must have been ideals revered by their civilization.
As intruders, it would be rather tasteless to pry into another civilization's history. After observing the murals, everyone felt a knot in their hearts; they were noticeably silent and reluctant to speak.
"Um, I think all the stories of this civilization should be contained within," Ross remarked as he sensed the expressions on everyone's faces. Although he spoke without malice, his thoughts seemed particularly insightful, as if he could see through others' minds. His intention was simply to encourage everyone to move forward.
Freyr's gaze immediately returned to focus as he continued, "Alright everyone, let’s keep moving. If you don’t want to look at it anymore, then don’t. This mural conveys a rather desperate scene; seeing it deeply will surely leave an impression that’s hard to forget. But now is not the time to break down; we need to get out first before we have any reason to cry or express our thoughts on this mission, don’t you think?"
To be honest, Freyr felt somewhat awkward at that moment; after all, this concerned team cohesion. The morale had taken a hit, and if this approach couldn’t lift everyone’s spirits, there would be no other methods left to try.
Fortunately, his timing was just right as someone began to move.
They couldn’t directly confront the figures in the murals; perhaps it was related to an instinctual aversion. At that moment, his emotions mirrored those of most people—he wasn’t oblivious to the current situation.
The current situation was vastly different, and he had come to understand all of this through his connection with others' inner thoughts.
The intuitive impact of the painting was overwhelming, but fortunately, his training as a Spiritual Purifier had instilled in him a strong mental resilience, allowing him to completely reject the negative influence it brought this time.
Indeed, the oppressive negative energy was significant. Anyone who viewed it without a strong Psychological Defense Line would likely become deeply trapped and unable to escape. Luckily, he had long since grown accustomed to such things.
Under his guidance, the mysterious blue light spread thoroughly through those it touched, reaching the Core. In that moment of release, it seemed as if those who were touched would fall into a state of oblivion, as long as they could eliminate those unhealthy memories.
In that case, they would likely recover quickly. Clearly, this ability was something he relied on regularly; it had helped him immensely. Thus, despite experiencing some ridicule at times, he remained unaffected. Although there was a possibility that those memories might return all at once in the future, causing even greater mental pressure, for now, he could continue moving forward.
Regardless of whether he faced a mental breakdown in the future or struggled to live on later, he knew that during such times, he must not entertain thoughts of giving up.
It was evident that the side effects of this ability were generally like this. He wasn't afraid of memories returning because by then, perhaps his Psychological Defense Line would be even stronger than it was now. While his current mental defenses might be fragile, experiences and external cultivation would gradually lead to improvement. By that time, they might be able to rely on an Astonishing Psychological Defense Line to endure it all—this belief in a brighter future kept him going.
After performing this healing operation for most people, they continued onward. If possible, the despair emanating from the mural might still be illuminated by sunlight, but that wasn’t too concerning; as long as they remembered to look aside at all times, nothing too serious would happen.
In contrast, others seemed less composed. However, without his treatment, their situation might have been even worse. The end of the narrow path slowly came into view—a massive Channel loomed ahead, resembling a deep pit filled with water.
It was clearly a pit over ten meters deep; what lay beneath remained unknown. However, as common practice dictated, they prepared to lower a rope with testing instruments to check if there were any other substances below. There were areas like Silent Ridge where Channels exhibited acidic properties.
If acidic properties were present, then any machinery would dissolve instantly. To their surprise, the Review Machine suddenly activated below. When they pulled it back up for inspection, they found that most of the material down there was just ordinary Clear Water.
They still couldn't rule out whether aggressive fish or terrifying monsters existed beneath the Channel. After walking for so long in this place, recklessly jumping down to investigate would be akin to offering one's arm to a shark's jaws—a perilous decision indeed.
"It seems the water is fine; it's just ordinary Clear Water, rich in minerals. The sound you heard earlier actually came from this underground Channel. It appears to be the sound of moving water below, possibly connected to a lake outside. Depending on the tidal shifts, there can be sudden rises and dry spells here. So, you see, it's not as terrifying as it sounds," Ross explained.
