Once Freyr reached the shore, the others immediately brought medicine to help him clean his body. The heat of the water was intense enough to cause skin peeling; if he stayed in much longer, he might suffer from burns, as if he were being cooked in a hot pot. It was likely that no living creatures could survive in such scorching conditions.
With the aid of the cooling ointment, Freyr soon felt a refreshing sensation throughout his body. After rubbing it in vigorously, the peeling on his muscles ceased almost instantly, demonstrating the effectiveness of the medicine.
After waiting for Freyr to recover from his Gene Chain state, he stood up and prepared to lead everyone deeper into their exploration. However, when he glanced at Ross, it seemed that Ross had other thoughts but quickly masked his expression.
"Alright, let's proceed according to Ross's method. Ross, do you have any good suggestions?" Freyr asked directly, hinting at something deeper. But Ross was well aware of Freyr's intentions. If others perceived the Commander as someone who broke conventions and treated subordinates with respect, it would foster a more cohesive and dynamic atmosphere.
In a typical situation, Ross might have hesitated about stepping into a leadership role. However, given the current circumstances, there was no room for doubt. If he did not comply with the Commander's wishes, it would surely breed suspicion among the team—especially in such a precarious environment where distrust could lead to dire consequences.
Although Ross possessed considerable intelligence, without someone who understood him—a mentor—he would be like a headless horse, unable to find a suitable master or team for his strategies, ultimately becoming lost and ineffective.
Isn't it true? The one who can guide the team out of such predicaments must be a leader. A true leader does not shy away from difficult questions; rather, they handle them adeptly and can silence most dissenting voices. However, such individuals are rare. Teams that have reached this level have likely ascended to greater heights. This time marked the first mission for the Soldier-Level Hunter Team, and they had much more to accomplish than ever before.
Although they had been promoted to a higher team level, sometimes such promotions could lead to worse outcomes than remaining at a lower tier. When they were at a lower level, issues stemming from their Score had less impact. However, as their Score increased significantly compared to before, it sparked some undesirable attitudes regarding fairness and equity within the team.
After hearing this discussion, Ross—who had been avoiding everyone's gaze—finally stood up out of necessity.
As for why he did so, it was clear what was at stake. He likely did not want the team atmosphere to become awkwardly tense during this critical moment. If it weren't for his essential role in this situation, he might have preferred to remain hidden, especially since showcasing his abilities could lead to jealousy and exclusion. After all, having gone through numerous team changes in the past was no trivial matter.
"Alright everyone, follow me. From now on, I will lead you," Ross announced with newfound determination in his voice. "The temperature here will soon rise even further."
If it were only that simple, interactions wouldn't feel too awkward. On one hand, Ross began moving forward slowly; on the other hand, his words shattered the silence and refocused everyone's thoughts on their immediate predicament.
The ground was riddled with numerous pits and fine holes, making it difficult to examine closely with the naked eye. After all, there were just too many tiny openings. As Ross walked, he found himself counting in his mind, and when he finally stopped, a burst of steam erupted before him, just a few steps away.
The heat emanating from the steam was unexpectedly intense, and even at a distance of nearly half a meter, they could feel the scorching warmth radiating from it. However, the steam vents did not maintain their pressure for long; after a few minutes, the wall of steam dissipated. They needed to leave quickly; if they were caught in another eruption, their chances of survival would be slim.
The group pressed on, encountering several dangers along the way. They narrowly escaped being engulfed by the walls of steam that surged around them, which were indeed terrifying. Fortunately, Ross's foresight helped them navigate through safely, pulling everyone out of harm's way.
Soon, they arrived at an open area covered in yellow sand. It was surprising to discover that there was a desert beneath them, littered with the remains of large creatures. The size of the bones was astonishing; they resembled dinosaur skeletons. If there were bones here, it implied that fearsome predators once roamed this land.
"Wow, are those dinosaur bones? Why are they so massive?" exclaimed Xiong Tai, a foodie in the group, as he picked up a bone longer than his leg for comparison. If it had been a whole piece of chicken meat, he would have been even more excited.
When the others saw the bone in his hands, they were equally shocked. After observing for a moment longer, they noticed other markings nearby—huge footprints lined up in a row.
If such large prints were left behind, it was clear that a gigantic predator had once hunted for food here. This bone could belong to one of the indigenous creatures of this land. However, Ross doubted that such enormous beings still existed. It was more likely that these were remnants of some ancient creatures. In the past, reptiles indeed grew to massive sizes and possessed strange predatory speeds. But due to a major extinction event, mammals had come to dominate the surface world.
This phenomenon was both a result of drastic changes over time and an indication that only those species capable of adapting to their era survived. The mammals back then could never have imagined that intelligent mammals would eventually emerge on Earth—creatures far stronger than those that had once ruled the planet.
Clearly, the discovery of this bone raised many questions. Although they wanted to linger and perhaps set up surveillance to uncover more clues about this place, their immediate priority was ensuring everyone's safety and finding a way out.
