New Era of Humanity in the Apocalypse
The group followed closely behind, entering the cave.
Around the cave's entrance, several undercurrents swirled, occasionally surging to create a vortex that could drag anything caught within down to the depths. The force of this current was something an ordinary person could not withstand; the collisions in the water were immensely powerful, and one could easily lose consciousness from the impact.
Under normal circumstances, such currents would be expected, yet they boldly ventured into the cave. In truth, there had been some miscalculations; the undercurrents were actually caused by underground water surging violently. At that moment, it was precisely when the currents were most turbulent. Waves of force suddenly struck them, causing them to spin uncontrollably. They could only cling to the cave walls to slightly counteract the impact, striving for a balance against nature's might.
However, human strength could never truly rival natural forces. Although their resistance was strong, it was still insufficient for a fair fight. The surges of the undercurrents came in waves, not lasting long, allowing them to endure this round. Freyr nearly managed to break free from Gene Chain's grip; that power would make his resistance even stronger.
Yet given his current physical condition, using Gene Chain would exacerbate his injuries. The severity of this consequence was terrifying; unless absolutely necessary, it was better to avoid using Gene Chain altogether. Any injury could lead to bodily complications and potentially reawaken old wounds.
At this moment, Freyr felt a sharp pain in his chest. This was no longer merely a matter of physical endurance; if he didn't find a way to break free, he feared he might never escape alive. His injuries required a combination of medical equipment and dietary support for any chance of recovery.
Once the surge subsided, they continued swimming upstream. This journey was destined to be extraordinary, filled with hardships and obstacles. The situation on this side was quite daunting; it proved that swimming against the current was far more exhausting than swimming against the wind.
Unsurprisingly, despite encountering two more undercurrents along the way, they eventually found an outlet beneath a waterfall and slid into a pool below. This area was desolate and remote, and it seemed odd for such a pool to exist here; however, danger lurked nearby.
They crawled slowly out from the depths of the pool. Once on shore, everyone took a deep breath after spending so long in that confined space where sunlight barely penetrated. Their eyes struggled to adjust momentarily as they lay on the rocks to bask in the sun for a while before changing into dry clothes and repacking their gear for departure.
Time seemed to have exceeded their limits; however, at least half of their mission had been accomplished. The difficulty had surpassed expectations, but surviving and returning meant they should still sense changes back at mission control since everything had been recorded in Survey Gem.
Once everyone had dried off completely, they stumbled back to their original positions, pulled out their vehicle, and activated Flight Mode, preparing for a direct return to headquarters. They were utterly exhausted and planned to take full advantage of this Flight Mode to rest up while ensuring their energy shields were activated.
It turned out that this Flight Mode helped the team a lot; they no longer had to worry about recovery. At least they were alive, although they hadn't suffered any serious injuries. However, excessive fatigue had triggered some ailments, and they needed to rest properly. No matter how strong their bodies were, they couldn't withstand the troubles encountered during the mission.
With Flight Mode activated, the vehicle shook violently for a moment before speeding off.
The vehicle was equipped with an Anti-Gravity Engine and Jet Flame. The combination of these two forces helped stabilize its speed: one controlled direction while the thrust generated by both allowed the vehicle to reach incredible speeds. This kind of invention was still relatively primitive; despite technological advancements over the years, flying cars had only just begun to develop. The control performance had significant shortcomings, but now it had been adjusted. If it were set to allow the Intelligent Software to automatically determine and check for errors, it could control its position at regular intervals. What used to rely on human memory was now entirely entrusted to machines for identification and application.
Everything has its pros and cons. Although one shouldn't rely too heavily on intelligent judgment, if Logic is rigidly defined, it can still help avoid some troublesome situations. As long as control is limited, there shouldn't be too many issues.
This Reform represented a significant breakthrough; the impact of flying car development was immense.
“Everyone should take a nap; don’t push yourselves any longer. I’ve set an alarm; I’ll wake you up in nine and a half hours,” Freyr suddenly said, yawning.
“Alright, let’s all sleep for a bit,” Xiong Tai chimed in, having already dozed off with soft snores soon following. He truly was an odd character.
As everyone watched Xiong Tai, their expressions gradually became drowsy as well. Ross took out a pair of earplugs and added, “Uh, I’ll sleep for a while.”
Freyr chuckled softly and said, “That’s good; I’ll sleep too. Alpha, wake us when it’s time.”
He called out to the voice-controlled Alpha. This intelligent assistant began playing a gentle song through the audio system, resembling a lullaby, aimed at making those inside the vehicle feel more comfortable while sleeping amidst the frequent turbulence of flying.
Even though they were airborne, the probability of accidents remained relatively high. The energy barrier could deflect any birds that might collide with them without causing any damage to the vehicle.
In other aspects, travel efficiency was also quite high, maximizing safety while maintaining a relatively smooth speed, which enhanced comfort during sleep.
The expressions on everyone's faces gradually relaxed from tension. It was evident that they had been a bit anxious at first, but after more than ten minutes had passed without incident, they began to feel at ease. Perhaps they thought that if nothing had gone wrong for that long, it truly was safe, and so they peacefully drifted off to sleep, knowing that when they opened their eyes again, they would likely regain control of the driving.
This experience had been too bizarre. Freyr, in a drowsy state, continued to ponder the trials and confusions of this ordeal. It wasn't his fault; it was a misjudgment by the system. When he returned, he would definitely hold others accountable—he couldn't let them off the hook this time.
The others felt calm inside; they considered this hurdle overcome.
But who could know that some turmoil and unease were once again troubling their hearts? It seemed something was gnawing at them. They possessed a certain ability to sense impending danger, which made this unease grip their minds and tear at their souls.
It was no longer just one person feeling this way. Freyr's right eye twitched uncontrollably; this was certainly not a good sign. The vehicle showed no signs of slowing down, transforming into a streak of white light as it surged forward.
