With the items in hand, I arrived at the place where I had agreed to meet Mu Xuanche.
By the time I got there, Bai Qiling and Shangguan Mingyue were already waiting.
Seeing me arrive, Shangguan Mingyue seemed a bit excited and wanted to rush over, but Bai Qiling held her back by the collar, preventing her from getting free.
Bai Qiling's method of gradually wearing down was particularly effective on Mingyue. For someone as emotionally clueless as her, neither soft nor hard approaches worked.
Only this tactic could slowly win her over, like boiling a frog in warm water—gradually increasing the heat until it was too late for her to notice.
After glancing around for a while without spotting Mu Xuanche, I couldn't help but ask Bai Qiling, "Why hasn't Mu Xuanche arrived yet?"
He shot me a disdainful look. "How would I know? He's your husband."
I had been in a bad mood recently and didn't have the energy to argue with him, but he seemed eager for a confrontation now that he had some free time to see how I would deal with him.
"Hey Mingyue, I'm feeling a bit thirsty. Could you go to the well up ahead and fetch me some water?"
She glanced at me and frowned. "Why don't you go yourself?"
"Exactly, do you have no hands or feet?" Bai Qiling chimed in from the side.
I was seething inside but put on a pitiful expression as I looked at Shangguan Mingyue. "Mingyue, I ran over here and I'm exhausted. Please just go get me some water."
"Alright, I'll go get you some water. Look at your pitiful state,"
Bai Qiling shot me an annoyed glance, ready to follow.
He probably never expected that I would actually stop him. "Bai Qiling, you don't need to go. Why bring so many people just to get some water?"
Shangguan Mingyue chimed in, "Yeah, you should stay here and keep an eye on Gu Yanxi."
After being scolded a bit, Bai Qiling sulked and stayed put. He wasn't quite close enough to Shangguan Mingyue yet to dare confront her directly.
I was just taking advantage of this little weakness of his, so what?
I smirked at him and then warned, "Bai Qiling, you should know that Sister-in-law is very important. If you want to achieve more with less effort, stop provoking her. Otherwise, if Sister-in-law gets upset, the consequences could be severe."
He smirked back at me, maintaining his calm demeanor, mimicking my tone as he replied,
"Gu Yanxi, you should know that Uncle Nephew is very important. If you want to get along well with your husband, you should also please Uncle Nephew. Otherwise, if Uncle Nephew gets angry, the consequences could be quite serious."
Damn it, this guy actually learned my tricks! Let's see how I deal with you.
"Yes, both Sister-in-law and Uncle Nephew need to be pleased. But my husband values beauty over friendship while my sisters value friendship over beauty. What are we supposed to do about that?"
With a light-hearted remark, I nearly made Bai Qiling spit out a mouthful of blood in frustration.
He pointed at me, speechless.
Who told him that Shangguan Mingyue was his Achilles' heel? Just that simple sentence was enough to leave the eloquent Bai Qiling at a loss for words. It made me incredibly happy.
Before long, Shangguan Mingyue returned, panting and holding a bottle of water. Bai Qiling had initially wanted to scold me, but my raised eyebrow silenced him.
This man was nothing but a toxic male; he was currently enduring my presence, waiting for the right moment to reclaim his dominance.
As the sky began to brighten slowly, I grew anxious since Mu Xuanche still hadn't returned.
At five-thirty in the morning, it was already getting bright, and the sun was preparing to rise.
Bai Qiling glanced at his watch and said, "Let's go back to your house first."
"No way. Mu Xuanche hasn't come back yet; we can't leave."
I stubbornly insisted on waiting for Mu Xuanche before leaving.
Shangguan Mingyue stood by my side. "Exactly. We came out together, so we should go back together."
"He instructed us that if he hasn't returned by sunrise to let us leave first," Bai Qiling added.
Seeing my doubtful expression, Bai Qiling spoke again, "If you don't believe me, then you can stay here and wait."
He then pulled Shangguan Mingyue away with him. Although Mingyue didn't want to leave, he was forcibly dragged along.
Is it true that one becomes like those they associate with? I couldn't shake the feeling that Bai Qiling had some of Mu Xuanche's traits when he got serious.
They left me standing alone.
After waiting for about two hours, the sun was nearly overhead.
Mu Xuanche appeared in my line of sight, trembling slightly. Noticing his pale complexion, I hurried over to support him.
As I approached, he was on high alert and seemed ready to strike at me. I called out his name, and only then did he retract his hand and lean against my shoulder.
"Why didn't you come back with Bai Qiling?" he asked me.
I glared at him. "You lunatic! You didn't come back, so how could I?"
His voice sounded weak, and he seemed unusually off. I quickly asked, "What happened to you?"
"Don't ask so much. Just take me home; Bai saved me," he replied.
Seeing that something was seriously wrong, I didn’t hesitate any longer. I wrapped my arms around Mu Xuanche's waist and dragged him back.
Upon reaching the front door, I shouted Bai Qiling's name.
Bai Qiling had initially come out with a stern expression, ready to scold me, but upon seeing Mu Xuanche beside me, his demeanor changed instantly. He rushed over to help him inside.
Bai Qiling occupied my room but wouldn’t let me in. I wanted to open the door to check on Mu Xuanche, but Bai had locked it tight.
Mingyue comforted me from the side. "Yan Xi, don’t worry; he’ll be fine. Although Bai seems unreliable at times, his medical skills are quite dependable."
"Who’s unreliable?"
Hearing Bai Qiling's voice behind me, I immediately turned to look.
He had originally intended to ask him something, but he pulled Mingyue and left directly.
The door was already open, so I walked in.
Mu Xuanche lay pale on the bed, his back showing a large scar that had just been stitched up, the white flesh curling outward in a way that was frightening to behold.
I covered my mouth, afraid to express my feelings, yet tears streamed down uncontrollably.
One drop, then another, slowly sliding down his back.
As if sensing my tears, he turned his back to me and reached out to pull me close.
I gasped, "Your injury..."
"It's nothing," he looked at me, his eyes filled with sincerity.
He brushed my hair aside and gently kissed away the tears on my face. His cold lips moved to my ear as he whispered, "Don't worry, it's fine."
Just those words were enough to bring me comfort.
That was his strength.
Nodding while nestled in his embrace, I felt a whirlwind of confusion in my heart.
After hesitating for a moment, I finally spoke from the side, "I got what you asked me to retrieve from the Cao Family."
"Mm," he replied.
A simple sound, devoid of unnecessary words, seemed almost predetermined.
Seeing he had no reaction, I continued, "Old Cao the Craftsman wants me to tell you to do it."
He nodded slightly, his expression still unchanged.
I cautiously spoke again, "What does he want you to do?"
His piercing, deep-set eyes stared directly at me. Just as I was about to give up and let it go, he finally spoke, "To save his son's life."
Cao Jin was already dead; no matter how capable Mu Xuanche was, he couldn't bring Cao Jin back. So the one to be saved must be Cao Yin.
"What happened to Cao Yin?"
This time I asked Mu Xuanche directly.
He didn't hide it and told me plainly, "The Cao Family gave me what the Cult of Spirits wanted. Naturally, they can't escape the Cult's grasp. They merely handed over the items to me in exchange for a life-saving talisman."
After carefully considering his words, I felt something was off.
"Then why go around in circles? Old Cao the Craftsman could have just given the items directly to the Cult of Spirits. That way, they could avoid disaster too."
"Is it because of Cao Jin?"
I looked at Mu Xuanche, and he nodded in response.
It seemed it really was because of Cao Jin—a son of the Cao Family who had died yet still had to serve the Cult of Spirits.
Old Cao the Craftsman could not bear the thought of that Old Fox. He was uncertain whether the Cult of Spirits would obtain something and then harm his children, so it was better to give the item to Mu Xuanche in exchange for a life-saving talisman.
Before I left, he deliberately spoke to me, intending to lead me to ask Mu Xuanche and learn about Cao Yin's situation.
The Old Fox had seen through my thoughts, knowing I was not a heartless person who would allow Mu Xuanche to indiscriminately kill the innocent.
As it turned out, Cao Yin's life was preserved.
With Mu Xuanche protecting him, even if he obtained the item, Mu Xuanche would not be able to harm Cao Yin because I would not allow him to take action.
The Old Fox's intentions were truly profound; despite my carefulness, I still fell into his scheme.
