Two more days had passed, and I should have been discharged by now.
However, as night fell, I still hadn't seen Mu Xuanche. Around seven in the evening, Bai Qiling arrived at the hospital room.
"Let's go."
I looked at him, puzzled. "Where to?"
"Aren't you always saying you want to go back? You can leave now; the car is downstairs to take you back to the island."
He finished speaking, and I quietly responded with a single syllable, "Oh."
I stood up, holding the baby, and began to gather my things before following him downstairs.
Once I got into the car, I still hadn't seen Mu Xuanche.
As the car pulled away, tears silently fell from my eyes. I didn't even know why they came.
The glistening droplets slid down to the baby's lips. Not understanding, he stuck out his tongue to lick them.
I smiled bitterly as I wiped them away, feeling a pang of heartache as I held the child tightly.
It seemed that Mu Xuanche and I were destined to have no further ties.
Upon returning to the island, before I even disembarked, I spotted the figure of a big man waiting by the boat.
Seeing me appear, he rushed over eagerly.
His gaze was fixed intently on the child in my arms, his expression unusually gentle, which was quite at odds with his robust physique.
"Big Man, do you want to hold the baby?" I asked him.
"No, I'm just a rough guy. The child is so fragile; it wouldn't be good if I hurt him."
Even though he answered like that, I noticed his hands hanging at his sides, unconsciously rubbing together, revealing his deep desire.
I smiled quietly; this Big Guy was quite amusing.
"Big Guy, I've been holding him for so long that my arms are sore. Why don't you help me hold him?"
"Oh, is that so? Then I'll take him."
Since the moment he started talking to me, his gaze had never left the child in my arms.
When I placed the baby into his hands, he stiffened completely. His arms tensed up as if he were facing a formidable enemy.
I couldn't help but laugh. "Big Guy, there's no need to be nervous. Hold him gently. If you act like that, the baby will be scared; he’ll feel more comfortable if you’re gentle."
With my guidance, he gradually relaxed and grinned at me. "Yan Xi, look! The young master is smiling at me."
Young master?
Noticing my silence, he finally realized he had misspoken. He glanced up at me with a look of grievance, almost on the verge of tears.
He had done so much for me; how could I bear to blame him? It was just that I couldn't shake off the anger of feeling deceived for a moment.
"Let's go; take me back. Mingyue and the others might be waiting anxiously."
After returning to the wooden house, it was filled with injured soldiers.
Mingyue had her hand bandaged, and He Zhi Yong had his leg wrapped up, making my eyes well up again.
Seeing me like this, Mingyue immediately changed the subject.
"Ah, big guy, is that my godson you're holding? Hurry up and bring him over for Godmother to see; I've missed him so much."
The big man cradled Chang'an as if he were a precious treasure, not even giving Mingyue a glance.
The atmosphere in the room became harmonious with the arrival of this new life. He Zhi Yong leaned back in his chair, laughing heartily.
"Uncle, thank you this time; I know it must have been tough on you."
He turned to look at me, stretching lazily, exuding an air of nonchalance.
"Hey, it's no big deal. Your Uncle took plenty of bullets back in the day when I roamed the world; this is just one bullet more, as easy as cracking sunflower seeds."
But I caught a glimpse of the faint blush on his face, as he lowered his head to hide it from me.
This Old Fox rarely showed such a side, so I decided not to call him out on it.
After quite a commotion, it was only when the big man finally sent Mingyue away that things quieted down.
Feeling tired, I lay down on the bed to rest.
It was rare to find such peace on the bed that the big man had prepared long ago; the journey had worn him out too.
Just as I closed my eyes and prepared to sleep, a shadow suddenly appeared in the room.
The person first glanced at the child on the bed before walking over to me.
Sitting down beside my bed, I knew who he was; I had nothing to say, and neither did he.
In the darkness, I knew he was watching me.
Time passed slowly until I finally couldn't hold back any longer and spoke up.
"Have you seen enough? If you've seen enough, you can leave."
He didn't answer me; instead, he bent down and lay back.
I reached out to push him off the bed, but he grabbed my hand.
When I tried to hit him with my other hand, he caught that one too, and in the end, he pulled me into his embrace.
"Stop messing around."
His low reprimand made my eyes turn red.
Lying in his arms, I silently began to cry.
I had no idea if he ever liked me at all.
His hand found my face in the darkness, wiping away my tears, while the other hand gently patted my back.
"Don't cry. You can hit or scold me if you want."
No, something was wrong.
Why did his hand feel warm?
"Are you... alive again?"
"Yeah."
All I received in response was a muffled sound.
My mind was about to explode. How could he be alive again? How could this happen?
Revival requires the child's heart's blood. If he Revivals, then the child...
A chill ran through my entire body, and I felt stiff all over.
He noticed, rubbing my body gently. Leaning his head closer to me, his warm lips brushed against my ear. "Baby, don't think too much. It's not what you think. Our child is perfectly fine, trust me."
I pushed him away, choking back tears. "Can I still trust you?"
He was silent, holding my head and pressing it against his chest.
"I promise, our child is fine. Trust me, I swear on my name."
I had only been confused for a moment to think that way; Long An and I shared a deep connection. I could sense it.
"Sleep now. Just sleep and don’t think about anything. When you wake up tomorrow, I’ll be gone. Just let me hold you for one night."
His tone was somewhat humble, pitifully low.
It was the first time I had seen him like this; he was the lofty Mu Xuanche, Qilin Island Island Master, yet here he was, bowing so low before me.
If he truly loved me, why did he hurt me in the first place? I couldn't understand his reasons.
But his deep voice made me give up struggling, and I obediently lay in his embrace.
Mu Xuanche, no matter what he becomes, he always manages to capture my heart instantly, making me fall deeper.
Let this be the last night of farewell, reminding myself not to sink any further.
As if prompted by my heart, after doing my inner work, I slowly reached out to rest my hand on his waist.
He responded by wrapping his arms around me.
A kiss was quietly pressed onto my forehead, soothing me.
"Be good, sleep now."
As if I had taken a sleeping pill, I fell into a deep slumber in his arms within just three seconds.
When I woke up the next day, the warmth by my side was already gone.
As I pushed open the door to leave, I nearly tripped over a large man standing at the entrance.
Startled, I exclaimed, "What are you doing here?"
He rubbed his head and gave me a silly grin after being awakened.
"Yan Xi, I arrived at four this morning. I was worried you might still be sleeping, so I didn’t want to disturb you. I ended up dozing off here. Sorry about that."
Noticing the bandages wrapped around him, I frowned and asked, "You’re still injured. Why did you come here instead of resting? Is there something urgent?"
"No, I just thought you might not be used to it and wanted to check on you."
He nodded silently, looking like a child who had done something wrong, afraid of being scolded.
"Don’t worry, everything is fine. Chang'an slept well last night. I have to thank you for making the bed; it helped him sleep soundly."
His face lit up with a big smile, clearly in a good mood. "Really? That’s great! I'll go make some toys for him later so he can be happy."
Such a child wouldn’t understand toys. Knowing his good intentions, I didn’t call him out on it.
I instructed him, "You need to remember one thing."
Seeing my serious expression, he straightened his face. "Yan Xi, whatever it takes—through fire and water—I will make it happen."
As soon as he arrived at Island Brute, his intelligence seemed to falter. He chuckled lightly, "Big guy, it's not that I want you to climb a mountain of knives or dive into a sea of fire, but you must remember never to call him Chang'an Young Master. This is something you absolutely cannot say."
"Why not? Isn't he just a young master?" He looked utterly confused.
Although he didn't understand why Mu Xuanche had not reverted to his original appearance and continued to present himself as Island Master, there must be a reason for it. If he chose to do so, it was for a purpose. They couldn't be together, and he never intended to harm him.
If anything were to happen to him because of me, then I would never be able to let go of it in this lifetime.
