"Turn right and keep going straight," Zhang Yu said, closing his eyes for a moment as he shifted his weight.
Su Ruolan immediately turned the steering wheel sharply, drifting out far before heading straight again. She frowned and said, "Next time, please give me a heads-up before turning."
"Oh come on, the person who got hit is fine, but your temper is something else," Zhang Yu muttered, rubbing his forehead.
"At the traffic light ahead, turn left onto South Yue Road. Do you see that villa on the mountain with the red roof? That's where I live," Zhang Yu directed as they finally arrived at his residence.
Before the apocalypse, H City was the most prosperous area, where a series of ecological vacation villas were built, nestled against the mountains and by the water. With a serene atmosphere for listening to music and enjoying tea, these villas were not yet on the market but had already been sold out in advance. Only the privileged could secure a place. Zhang Yu's mother was the daughter of the He Family from Jiangnan. During a visit to H City, she fell in love with this environment at first sight. To please his beloved wife, Zhang Yu's father, Zhang Jianzhong, quickly negotiated with the top official of H City and secured the best location for one of these villas.
The steel gate opened automatically. In these years of apocalypse, ordinary families had long since stopped using electricity and returned to oil lamps for lighting. Yet, Zhang Yu's villa still maintained power usage, showcasing their deep family wealth.
"Young Commander, you're back!" The butler Xu Bo rushed out excitedly upon spotting the military Hummer on the surveillance monitor.
The Hummer drove right up to the main entrance of the villa. "Xu Bo, thank you for your hard work. Bring over two trustworthy people," Zhang Yu said upon seeing Xu Bo, his expression filled with excitement that he quickly suppressed as he spoke softly.
Xu Bo paused briefly but continued to show joy on his face as he waved to two figures behind him. "Zhang Yan, Zhang Shou, come over here and let Young Commander see how much you've grown."
Two muscular men over six feet tall approached the Hummer; they were twins—one with a simple demeanor and the other looking sharp-witted. Zhang Yu pushed open the door with his right arm and playfully patted the arm of the sharper-looking twin, laughing, "Wow, you both have gotten so strong; you're even taller than me now."
Zhang Yan immediately supported Zhang Yu's arm with his left hand and grinned, "Young Commander, I've been well-fed here; naturally, I've grown strong."
Perhaps due to their twin bond, Zhang Shou quickly moved to Zhang Yu's left side. Though his loose clothing concealed it well, he was actually supporting Zhang Yu's waist as he said earnestly, "Young Commander, I've recently developed six-pack abs; my strength has increased a lot."
Zhang Yu and the twins were meeting for the first time, yet their warm interaction felt like a reunion among old friends.
Using their baggy clothes and strategic positioning to shield him from view, the twins cleverly helped guide Zhang Yu into the inner room. To an outsider's perspective, it seemed as if Zhang Yu was laughing while patting their shoulders and playfully touching their bellies as they walked in together.
Su Ruolan followed silently into the inner room.
Xu Bo saw Su Ruolan and displayed a calm demeanor, as if it were nothing unusual.
Su Ruolan observed Zhang Yu's behavior and thought to herself that her judgment might have been slightly off. Given Qin Zhi Han's many concerns regarding Zhang Yu and his identity as the "Young Commander," she initially believed that Zhang Yu held significant power at H Base. However, it seemed that the situation here was complex, and everything was not as simple as she had imagined.
"Xu Bo, this young lady—by the way, I still don't know your name?" Zhang Yu turned to Su Ruolan and asked.
"Su Ruolan," she replied briefly.
"Oh, Ruo Lan, what a lovely name! No wonder I felt you were different from other women at first glance. Your demeanor is simple yet elegant, refined and noble. Truly a beautiful name for a beautiful person," Zhang Yu said with realization.
Suppressing the urge to strike him, Su Ruolan asked, "Where am I staying?"
"Xu Bo, this Sister Ruo Lan is my savior; we must not neglect her. Please arrange for her to rest in the guest room upstairs," Zhang Yu instructed Xu Bo earnestly.
"Understood. Please follow me," Xu Bo replied, leading a middle-aged woman named Fang Huijuan to take Su Ruolan to the guest room on the second floor.
After watching Fang Huijuan leave the room, Su Ruolan set down her backpack. She took a look around; the room was a suite that included a bathroom. There were no cameras or listening devices inside. Feeling relieved, she said to Monet in the space, "Keep an eye out for me while I take a shower. Call me if anything happens."
"Yes, Master," Monet nodded in response.
With a thought, Su Ruolan returned to her space and filled a wooden tub with water from the pond to soak in. Before the apocalypse, Su Ruolan had been extremely particular about cleanliness; she would shower every day unless absolutely necessary. After awakening her Water Ability, she had never neglected herself. Having traveled with Zhang Yu for several days without revealing her space, she had not been able to clean up and could no longer tolerate the sour smell. The water from the pond still held strong elemental energy, quickly washing away her fatigue and replenishing her energy.
After changing into clean clothes, Su Ruolan left her space and returned to the guest room. Since it was still early, she decided to study "The Seventh Element." When she flipped to the "Original Elements" section—"There are seven elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water in time and space. Spring is Wood, Summer is Fire, Autumn is Metal, Winter is Water; Earth is in the center encompassing all four seasons that operate within time and space. Thus Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood; time and space give rise to everything, freeze everything, destroy everything. Wood and Water govern life; Fire and Metal govern destruction; Earth belongs to both; time and space are chaotic. The seven elements maintain balance, cycle endlessly; life thrives while all things fade." Su Ruolan couldn't help but feel excited. This was the method of elemental origin—could it be that if Zero Space contained all seven elemental spirits, it could generate a complete world? Could it revive treasures? Was that what it meant? Eagerly wanting to clarify everything with Reset, she found that Reset remained silent.
Feeling somewhat disappointed but also having gained a viable clue, Su Ruolan quickly encouraged herself. After regaining her composure, she began practicing according to the method of elemental origin. Although she had previously fused Water and Wood elements together during their journey together with Zhang Yu, their purity had not been high; more often than not they were used separately. Now Su Ruolan practiced their fusion again. Unbeknownst to her, water elements in the room began to flow into her body while wood and water elements from outside gradually drifted into the room as well. As soon as Su Ruolan's consciousness touched these elemental points, her vision expanded far beyond.
The sounds around her became increasingly clear—the wind flowed gently through the trees outside; in the kitchen on the first floor, Fang Huijuan was chopping vegetables with rhythmic sounds while porridge bubbled in a pot; outside the study on the second floor stood Zhang Yan and Zhang Shou with their hands at their sides ready for battle while people inside whispered quietly.
"Younger Commander," Xu Bo reported. "Zhang Yan is indeed a renowned surgeon from H City’s Ninth Hospital; I think he did an excellent job treating your wounds. It was worth all the effort spent saving those two brothers before."
"Mm-hmm, not bad," Zhang Yu replied nonchalantly as he leaned back on the sofa with bandages wrapped around his left arm and legs while casually asking about recent happenings here.
"The situation here is not good. Food supplies are nearing an all-time low, and the resources we can find outside are dwindling. We can still manage one meal a day, while ordinary citizens are down to just one meal. The military has split into two factions: one supporting Colonel Jiang and the other supporting Colonel Zhu. They disagree on how to handle the common people; Jiang plans to demand eighty percent of their supplies as protection and sustenance for the troops, while Zhu disagrees, believing this is tantamount to abandoning them. Recently, there was another zombie siege, resulting in over a thousand casualties among the military and City Guard. Now, everyone is on edge. Colonel Jiang visited yesterday, asking the commander when aid would arrive, but I’ve been stalling," Xu Bo reported succinctly.
"This is truly terrible. You've been working hard in this situation," Zhang Yu said, pinching the bridge of his nose with his right hand.
"I'm just doing my duty for the commander. By the way, Young Commander, why isn't Qiu Bai with you? Is he still at S Base?" Xu Bo hesitated before asking.
"Xu Bo, the situation at S Base isn't good either. After Dark Day, food supplies there have also become tight. Qiu Bai and I went out together to search for resources, and while passing Longhu Mountain, we encountered three groups of zombies, a mutated wolf pack, and a flock of zombie birds. If it weren't for Su Ruolan saving me, we would have been wiped out. Qiu Bai has already gone; you have my condolences," Zhang Yu said gently.
"I... I had a feeling something was wrong. He wouldn't leave your side without a reason," Xu Bo's voice trembled as he aged visibly in that moment.
"By the way, has Qin Zhi Han returned?" Zhang Yu suddenly asked.
Both Xu Bo and Su Ruolan immediately focused intently.
"As you instructed, we've been monitoring his information closely. The last one who returned was severely injured and spent 48 hours in isolation. He has now been arranged at Ninth Hospital. Young Commander, is there anything special about this person?" Xu Bo managed to regain some composure after a moment of thought.
"Special? This person is not simple at all," Zhang Yu replied seriously.
Qin Zhi Han is alive; he has returned! Ninth Hospital—I'm going to see him! Su Ruolan felt a surge of excitement and joy.
