As he fell backward, the last thought of the Sound System soldier was one of deep regret. If there were a next life, he vowed to deal with enemies swiftly and decisively; otherwise, he would perish from his own verbosity.
Using Wood Vine, Su Ruolan gently caught the falling Sound System soldier and laid him on the ground. She deftly slipped into the Tenth Floor. The soldier on the ground had an Ice Spike embedded in his forehead, which gradually melted away, leaving only a bloodied hole where it had been. His expression remained frozen in a smug grin.
In the corridor, soldiers stood guard every three steps and kept watch every five steps, filling the short distance to the infirmary.
At that moment, footsteps echoed from downstairs, accompanied by a clamor.
A flashy soldier in charge at Room 109 frowned and barked, "What's all that noise? Jiang Da, go check it out. Everyone else, stay alert."
"Yes, sir." Jiang Da stood at attention and then turned to run downstairs. After a while, he returned to report, "Jiang Lianzhang, it's Squad Leader Liu down below. It's their turn to patrol the pharmacy tonight. They saw a thief enter and are currently searching the entire building. They’re short on manpower and want to borrow some of ours."
"Damn it! How can a pharmacy cause such trouble? Which brat is causing this? I’ll make sure they pay for it. Jiang Da, take a team down there; we need to rely on ourselves in critical moments. Those from the City Guard are useless." Jiang Yan cursed. "Everyone else, stay sharp; that thief might come this way too."
Su Ruolan scanned with her spiritual sense and finally detected Qin Zhi Han's presence in Room 109. However, his energy was turbulent; he was not in good condition.
The Ninth Hospital was most famous for its Psychiatry department, housing many patients with mental illnesses. Consequently, the layout of the rooms was different from standard designs. The exterior walls of the inpatient building had no doors or windows; the entire structure resembled a flowing body of water. Each floor had iron doors restricting access, requiring card swipes to enter. Each floor was divided into two circles of rooms: an outer circle along the walls and an inner circle in the middle of the floor. All room doors and windows faced inward, preventing direct access to the outside; thus, rescuing someone required entering the building. Room 109 was located in the inner circle.
"Company Commander, don’t you feel something’s off inside?" a soldier with a somewhat grim expression reported to Jiang Yan.
"Of course! Do I need to tell you that? Everyone prepare; as soon as Qin Zhi Han steps out of that room, shoot to kill," Jiang Yan commanded coldly.
"His energy is unstable; it's best to act now. Whether he upgrades or successfully turns into a Zombie, I fear none of us will be his match," the soldier continued to persuade.
"Are you in charge or am I? We'll wait for him to come out; we are soldiers, not bandits." Jiang Yan said, slapping the soldier on the head, pushing his cap down over his face.
Su Ruolan watched as half of the group left, while the remaining people gathered around the nurse's station and the entrance to Room 109. The space was cramped, and visibility was unobstructed; it would be impossible to reach Room 109 without making some noise. She took out two smoke grenades from her space, spoils she had picked up during the chaotic battle at the mysterious supermarket from Zhang Yu's subordinates, and tossed them into the corridor. Instantly, smoke billowed, obscuring vision.
"Enemy attack, fire!" Jiang Yan ordered immediately upon sensing something was off.
All the soldiers took cover behind the nurse's station and door walls, opening fire into the corridor. The fierce bullets tore through the building, creating holes, while shattered glass and tiles flew everywhere.
"Monet, merge!" Su Ruolan commanded softly. Monet quickly transformed into a pair of Wolfhead Battle Boots that she wore on her feet. After merging with Monet, Su Ruolan became increasingly adept at using Wind Type energy, cleverly wrapping the smoke around her body while directing it outward to avoid irritating her eyes. She could see the trajectory of the bullets more clearly; they moved as if in slow motion, making it easy for her to dodge. Using the confusion of the smoke grenade, Su Ruolan swiftly evaded bullets and advanced toward Room 109. All anyone could see was thick smoke swirling about with no sign of her.
"Damn it. Earth Wall!" Jiang Yan shouted suddenly, conjuring a wall of earth that blocked the spreading smoke. The smoke met the earthen barrier and was absorbed into it, becoming thinner and less dense.
This was bad; she hadn't expected there to be a high-level Earth Ability user here. Originally intending to sneak in and rescue someone without causing harm, it seemed that plan was no longer viable. Su Ruolan conjured Ice Spikes and aimed them at the soldiers' hands and legs.
Countless Ice Spikes shot toward the soldiers, many large fireballs and earthen shields countering them. Some melted upon contact with fire; others were deflected by earth shields; some continued undeterred straight into the crowd.
Following behind the fireballs and earth shields were countless bullets flying like a blooming flower, layers upon layers spreading out to cover the entire corridor. "Flourishing Blossoms!" shouted a Gold System Ability user.
"Rising Winds and Flowing Water!" Su Ruolan activated her Ability, instantly summoning a torrent of water that cascaded down like a waterfall. The bullets splashed into the water with soft thuds as their speed slowed due to water resistance. A strong wind then whipped up like a giant hand, swirling all the water enveloping the bullets away; they lost all forward momentum and fell to the ground with a series of thuds.
"Just a girl, but she's quite tough. Everyone form up!" Jiang Yan recognized from her voice that it was a woman and immediately became more interested.
The seven remaining individuals unleashed their ultimate techniques, and Su Ruolan suddenly felt that the ground beneath her feet was no longer marble tiles but a quicksand that continuously dragged people underground. The temperature around her was scorching hot, threatening to burn her skin. Countless daggers formed a sword formation, raining down like a storm. A burly soldier advanced step by step, wielding a heavy machine gun and firing wildly. Metal fragments fell around him, yet he remained unharmed, pressing forward.
Su Ruolan desperately wanted to move her body but found herself seemingly bound. Mental, earth, metal, fire—Power Type—what a grand display. All the energy converged at this moment, howling as it surged toward Su Ruolan.
Jiang Yan wore a smug smile, confident in the destructive power of his formation. Unfortunately for him, he had encountered Su Ruolan.
After forming a contract with space, Su Ruolan's mental strength had grown far beyond that of an ordinary person. Initially caught off guard and controlled because she had never anticipated such an attack, she quickly regained her senses once she recognized the mental assault. She feigned being under control while swiftly launching her counterattack. With a move called "Frozen for Miles," she cooled the explosive heat energy for just a few seconds—enough to serve as a lifeline. Then came "Chasing Wind and Pursuing Shadows," where she appeared to float past while her shadow lingered behind. With speed that could not be broken, Su Ruolan broke through before the energy could fully gather and explode. The energy ring met her afterimage and detonated, leaving the corridor between the floors and the stairwell in ruins.
While Su Ruolan battled Jiang Yan and his group, no one noticed the dark clouds gathering overhead, with strands of lightning flickering within them. As Jiang Yan and his companions concentrated their powerful attack, the long-gestating thunderstorm finally unleashed its fury, striking down upon the top of the Inpatient Department building and cascading down its exterior walls into room 109.
Hearing the commotion below, Jiang Da and Liu Dan led their team straight to the Tenth Floor.
In the conference room of the Administrative Building, everyone was startled by the sudden crack of thunder and rushed to the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Outside, torrential rain began to pour.
On the road outside the hospital, Zhang Yan stood by his car, hearing the bustling voices within the hospital. Frowning as he checked his watch, he got into his car and sped away.
