Looking at Zhang Yu, whose body was still twitching even in a coma, Su Ruolan felt a deep shock. Trapped under the military Humvee and facing such a life-and-death situation, Zhang Yu had not resorted to forbidden drugs for self-rescue. Why, then, had he used drugs in his search for her? Was the situation here even worse than before? At that moment, Su Ruolan seemed to forget her encounter with Cheetah Squad and Narrow Escape, filled with confusion over Zhang Yu's actions.
The Humvee pulled up to the villa entrance, where another car was parked outside. Bai Zhen opened the car door and stepped out. Upon seeing Su Ruolan sitting in the car with the unconscious Zhang Yu, he paused in surprise, handed a medicine pack to Zhang Yan, and turned to leave.
Zhang Yan opened the medicine pack and was delighted to find it contained medication for treating fractures. Just as she was about to express her gratitude, she noticed that Bai Zhen had already driven away.
As Su Ruolan and Zhang Yan helped Zhang Yu out of the car, Xu Bo, Zhang Shou, and Fang Huijuan rushed over to assist, carrying Zhang Yu into the bedroom.
Zhang Yan managed to get some medicine into Zhang Yu, then quietly exited the room.
Outside, Su Ruolan stood silently to one side. Fang Huijuan wore a worried expression, while Xu Bo, though trying to remain calm, showed signs of disapproval in his demeanor towards Su Ruolan. Zhang Shou was simply anxious and turned to Zhang Yan, asking, “Elder Brother, how is the Young Commander?”
“The backlash is severe; the Young Commander's body is unable to move. I’ve given him the medicine; it can only alleviate the inflammation. It depends on his willpower now. If he wakes quickly, that would be good; if not…” Zhang Yan replied seriously.
“Now that the Young Commander has shown himself, I believe it can dispel their doubts and buy us some time. We can't just wait any longer. Zhang Shou, you are a speed Ability user; take advantage of the chaos and go to the S Base for help,” instructed Xu Bo. “Huijuan, go make some porridge; it’s what the Young Commander loves most.”
“Alright, I’ll go make it. I’ll keep it warm so he can drink it whenever he wakes up,” said Fang Huijuan, feeling reassured and immediately heading downstairs to get busy.
“I’ll check the storeroom for any remaining medicine or food and see if I can whip up something nourishing,” said Zhang Yan, sensing an odd atmosphere as she rubbed her nose while walking away.
Feeling a bit awkward, Su Ruolan was about to leave for her room when Xu Bo cleared his throat a few times and said, “Although it shouldn’t be this way, as the woman of the Young Commander, Sister Ruo Lan, you’re not doing enough.”
“I am not your Young Commander’s woman,” retorted Su Ruolan, feeling quite offended.
“Every woman ends up like this; in the end, they are devoted,” replied Xu Bo, dismissively. “Even if you don’t admit it, it’s a fact that the Young Commander has become this way because of you. Shouldn’t you stay behind to take care of him?”
At that moment, the sound of a car engine echoed from outside the villa. Xu Bo hurried downstairs.
A group of soldiers surrounded the villa, and the leader said to Xu Bo, "It's chaotic outside. Colonel Jiang sent us to protect the Young Commander. Please have someone go out of the city to seek help as soon as possible."
Watching Xu Bo negotiate with the soldiers from the second-floor window, Su Ruolan realized she couldn't leave for now. She gently pushed open Zhang Yu's door, sat by the bed, and looked at his pale, unconscious face. Su Ruolan took out a bottle of water from the Spatial Water pool. She had always been reluctant to owe anyone a favor; if someone did her a kindness, she would repay it doubly. She fed the water into Zhang Yu's mouth and watched as his complexion gradually returned to normal before quietly leaving the room.
As she departed, she didn't notice that Zhang Yu's shattered bones and meridians were rapidly reconnecting, and his internal and external injuries were healing quickly, as if he had never been hurt at all. Red light spots began to appear in the air, gathering around him; the modified body attracted the elemental fire energy from its surroundings, which joyfully surged into Zhang Yu's body.
After a while, Zhang Yan came over with some sliced ginseng. He opened the door and was taken aback to see Zhang Yu looking healthy again. After a preliminary examination, he discovered that Zhang Yu had fully recovered and hurriedly informed Xu Bo, exclaiming, "It's a miracle! The Young Commander is truly blessed."
"Thank you! Thank you!" Fang Huijuan exclaimed excitedly, clasping her hands together in gratitude.
"What on earth happened?" Xu Bo couldn't hide his joy as he asked.
"I'm not sure either. I checked the medicine Bai Zhen gave me; there was no problem with it, which is why I dared to give it to the Young Commander," Zhang Yan replied, puzzled.
"Well, as long as it's not a bad thing, that's good enough. We can discuss everything else once the Young Commander wakes up," Xu Bo decided not to dwell on it further.
Awakened by the noise, Su Ruolan sleepily walked out of her room. Seeing her disheveled appearance, Xu Bo shook his head inwardly; he couldn't understand why the Young Commander valued such a woman.
"Sister Ruo Lan, the Young Commander's injuries are all healed. He's just tired and asleep now; he should wake up by tomorrow morning," Zhang Yan happily reported upon seeing Su Ruolan.
"Oh really? That's wonderful." Knowing well about the miraculous properties of Spatial Water, Su Ruolan felt assured that after drinking that bottle, Zhang Yu would be fine. She pretended to just find out and revealed a genuine smile.
Usually composed and aloof, when she smiled suddenly, it was like thousands of peach blossoms blooming all at once—radiant and enchanting, dazzling those who beheld her. Even Xu Bo, who was displeased with Su Ruolan, couldn't help but mutter to himself that the Young Commander was indeed captivated by beauty.
Zhang Yan and Fang Huijuan were equally astonished; after all, she was indeed a woman worthy of being chosen by the Young Commander—she was beautiful.
With everyone feeling relieved and happy, they prepared more food and sent it to the soldiers outside the villa. A few of them gathered around to eat together.
Just as she had taken a few bites, there was a sudden knock at the door. When she opened it, she saw Bai Zhen, covered in blood and dirt.
"Sister Su, I need your help with something," Bai Zhen said, getting straight to the point.
"What is it?" Su Ruolan asked.
"We have a comrade in our unit, Kong Yun. His entire family of five has just been killed in the city defense battle, leaving only his younger brother, Kong Xiang, in Zone Four. I want to go bring him back. Can you come with me?" Bai Zhen said candidly.
"No, it's too dangerous. Zone Five is experiencing severe anomalies right now, and Zone Four is very close to it. It's not safe at all. Sister Ruo Lan cannot go," Xu Bo immediately opposed.
"I know this is an unreasonable request. But the situation at the city is dire. The Company Commander is at the city gate and can't send more people over. The Company Commander actually doesn't allow me to disturb you since you're not a soldier and have no obligation to save anyone, but I really have no other choice," Bai Zhen said, tears welling in her eyes. "We have to leave something for Kong Yun's family."
Having lived in the military in her past life, Su Ruolan held great respect for martyrs. Faced with the urgent need to rescue the orphan of a fallen hero, she couldn't back down. "Alright, I'll go with you."
Bai Zhen was overjoyed and immediately walked out with Su Ruolan.
Xu Bo and the others wanted to stop them, but then they remembered that Su Ruolan didn't seem deeply attached to Zhang Yu. Feeling frustrated, they let her leave.
After several hours of acid rain, suddenly the wind stopped and the rain ceased. The dark sky gradually cleared up and began to brighten.
Su Ruolan had already eaten and drunk some water from her space before returning to her room. Although she had only rested for a few hours after two consecutive nights of fighting and rescuing people, she felt energized and physically fit.
This was Su Ruolan's first time taking a good look at the living area. Zone One was mostly made up of villas—townhouses, single-family homes, and stacked houses. Although there weren't many residents, each household had its own private guards, and the environment was relatively clean. It was evident that even in this apocalypse, these families maintained a relatively high standard of living.
A guard from Zone Two saw the special vehicle from Military Command and asked a few questions before letting them pass.
The living conditions in Zone Two, Three Districts, and Zone Four were vastly different. Even in this apocalypse, one could see the disparity between rich and poor; however, force had changed the standards of division. Some civilians who awakened abilities after the end of the world suddenly became part of a new middle class, participating in the new distribution of wealth and power.
At the entrance of the Isolation Zone Three-Four, the soldiers refused to let them pass.
"Instructor Bai, without orders from above, we cannot open the Isolation Gate," Area Police Captain Huang Dacheng said sternly.
"We're on official business for the Military Command. Huang, please make an exception," Bai Zhen said, pulling Huang Dacheng aside and discreetly handing him half a pack of Zhonghua cigarettes. Before the apocalypse, no one would have cared for such a thing, but after four years of survival, with no scent of smoke in the air, a large pack of cigarettes was a significant temptation for the smoking-addicted Huang Dacheng.
"Bai, you’re putting me in a tough spot here," Huang Dacheng said, eyeing the cigarettes hungrily but refusing to take them. He steeled himself and returned them to Bai Zhen.
"Come on, brother Huang, just think of a way to let us through. I promise we'll be back within half an hour," Bai Zhen insisted, shoving the cigarettes back into Huang Dacheng's hands.
"Alright, I can let you pass, but without a release order, I won't open the door for your return. I hope you understand," Huang Dacheng said after some thought, looking at Bai Zhen.
Considering that the areas were already sealed off, finding Kong Xiang and ensuring his safety until the city defense battle ended was a viable solution. Bai Zhen approached Su Ruolan for her opinion and received her agreement before reaching a consensus with Huang Dacheng.
"Okay, we’ll go over and wait for you to open the door when we come back," Bai Zhen promised.
In Zone Four, some civilians stood by the Isolation Gate, trying to slip through into the Three Districts as soon as it opened. They were pushed back by armed police and returned in frustration.
As the gate opened, Bai Zhen and Su Ruolan slowly drove into Zone Four.
