The approaching Zombies, despite their frail and decrepit appearances, clearly exhibited awareness and a sense of organization. Among them, a Snow White Zombie had emerged as the leader, followed by a group of swift-moving Zombies that herded hundreds of humans slowly toward the center of the area. Although the ratio of Zombies to humans was not even one to four, fear and despair were etched on the faces of the people, who huddled together, dragging their feet in a collective retreat, none daring to resist.
They arrived at the largest Green Square in the center, directly facing eighteen ten-story buildings. The Snow White Zombie leader scanned the crowd with its piercing gaze, prompting Su Ruolan to quickly silence herself while Kong Xiang immediately cloaked himself from view.
Noticing no unusual activity around them, the Snow White Zombie leader extended its long, withered hand and pointed toward the crowd. Several other Snow White Zombies nodded vigorously in response, emitting raspy sounds as they began to disperse the tightly packed group of humans.
The already terrified crowd became increasingly agitated, erupting into cries and screams.
The Snow White Zombie leader leaped onto the steps of the square, looking down at everyone. It pointed again within the throng, and immediately a Zombie dragged out a selected woman—Suddenly, it was the very person whom Su Ruolan had saved earlier but who had turned against her.
"Please, don’t kill me!" she shouted as she backed away.
The Snow White Zombie sprang forward, landing on her and wrapping its arms around her neck. It opened its mouth wide and bit down; its sharp fangs pierced her delicate skin as it began to drink her blood. The woman's face gradually turned pale, her eyes glazed over, her skin dried out, muscles atrophying as her body shrank. In an instant, her hair turned completely white. Moments later, the White Zombie Leader tossed aside her limp form. She had transformed into a new Snow White Zombie, lying helplessly on the ground before slowly rising to her feet.
The other Snow White Zombies and Common Zombies witnessed this transformation and collectively raised their fingers to point at the White Zombie Leader, nodding in agreement. Following its signal, they each lunged into the crowd in search of their own targets.
Panic ensued among the humans as they fled in all directions but were quickly trapped by the outer ring of Zombies. A one-sided massacre unfolded once more, blood flowing freely. Su Ruolan finally understood why there were so many human corpses hanging from the trees in this area. These Zombies consumed humans but discarded parts they did not want onto branches as if competing for respect among their kind by how much they could throw.
This brutal scene reminded Su Ruolan of the beheading and disembowelment she had suffered in her past life; these defenseless elderly and children should never have been sacrificed to such beasts. With tears in her eyes and fists clenched tightly, veins bulging on her forehead from anger, she could no longer hold back and burst through the door. Kong Xiang also appeared furious, unable to conceal his presence any longer. Everything he had witnessed before was now unfolding before them.
Faced with overwhelming odds against them, Su Ruolan decided to give it her all without holding back. She shouted, "Monet, come forth!"
A sharp wolf howl pierced the air—"Awoo!" Suddenly, a massive wolf with silver-gray fur appeared out of nowhere. It howled at the sky before swiftly pouncing on a Zombie and quickly severing its throat; its severed head rolled across the ground.
Su Ruolan activated her Ability as well; a barrage of Ice Spikes shot toward the Zombies, instantly taking down a cluster of Common Zombies.
The Snow White Zombies jumped around, dodging attacks.
A gap opened in the encirclement, and people rushed out in droves.
The White Zombie Leader spotted Su Ruolan and Kong Xiang, becoming unusually excited, especially at the sight of Su Ruolan. It drooled as it approached, commanding a group of Snow White Zombies to swarm forward.
"You take them and escape first," Su Ruolan said to Kong Xiang.
Kong Xiang glanced worriedly at Su Ruolan, but without hesitation, she called out to the scattered crowd, "Follow me."
"Monet, protect them. If there's any danger, return to the space immediately," Su Ruolan instructed Monet in a low voice.
Monet looked at Su Ruolan and understood her determination. Though she felt anxious inside, she obeyed the order and escorted the crowd to flee.
Initially, when they saw a giant wolf, people felt their lives were at an end and lost their will to fight. But when they witnessed the giant wolf slaughtering Zombies, they suddenly felt invigorated as if they had received a boost of adrenaline. Realizing that salvation had arrived, they rallied their spirits and began to escape. The crowd quickly followed Kong Xiang and the giant wolf toward safety, with Common Zombies chasing behind.
The White Zombie Leader stood aside, watching as dozens of Snow White Zombies lunged at Su Ruolan. These Zombies moved with the speed of second-tier Ability users, leaping through the air above Su Ruolan in an instant, sealing off all her escape routes.
Su Ruolan unleashed a technique called "Single Tree Becomes Forest," conjuring countless Wood Vines that accurately wrapped around each Snow White Zombie's hands, flinging them away. Just then, the White Zombie Leader made its move as well; it unleashed a massive water column aimed directly at Su Ruolan. Raindrops fell onto the Wood Vines with a sizzling sound as they quickly began to decay. This was an evolved Zombie with an Ability that had corrosive properties—specifically a Water Ability—suggesting it had just entered the third tier and was still unstable, its energy quite chaotic.
Su Ruolan's battle became increasingly arduous; her Wood Elemental Ability was suppressed by the acidic water and could not be utilized effectively. Meanwhile, her Ice Element and Ice Ability were evenly matched against the White Zombie Leader. Surrounding her were many Snow White Zombies forming a tightening encirclement that gradually compressed Su Ruolan's space for movement.
As she watched the approaching Zombies close in on her, Su Ruolan suddenly had an epiphany about the water from her spatial realm. In this dire situation, she had no choice but to take a desperate gamble. She summoned a stream from the Spatial Water pool and combined it with the healing Ability of Spirit of the Wood. "Gentle Rain Falls." A fine drizzle began to fall gently over the area.
At first glance, seeing rain made the White Zombie Leader scoff; it did not bother to evade. However, when the rain hit its body, it felt as if sulfuric acid had splashed on it—its entire body burned with a stinging sensation. It let out a howl, covering its face and retreating several steps. The front line of Snow White Zombies also fell victim to this attack, collapsing and rolling on the ground in agony. Those behind them were greatly frightened and hesitated in their movements.
Su Ruolan unleashed this area attack skill, consuming most of her internal energy. Seizing the opportunity, she broke through the encirclement and, relying on her connection with Monet, rushed in that direction.
The White Zombie Leader, being the closest to Su Ruolan, suffered the most damage. This was an evolved application of using one's spear against their own shield; due to the conflicting attributes, it unleashed tremendous destructive energy. The already hideous face of the White Zombie Leader was further marred. At that moment, a Snow White Zombie rolled to its feet, only to be kicked aside. The leader then seized its throat and twisted it like wringing a towel until the neck snapped, crushing its skull to extract the Zombie Crystal within and stuffing it into its mouth. The other Snow White Zombies trembled in fear, obediently crouching in place. The overwhelming pressure from the leader stifled any thoughts of resistance among them.
The White Zombie Leader began to absorb several of its subordinates' cores, slowly healing its wounds. However, the internal burning sensation had ceased, leaving only faint scars on the surface. It turned out that the White Zombie Leader relied on devouring fellow zombies' abilities to continuously gain energy and upgrade itself. No wonder its energy was impure, mixed with many impurities. Gazing at Su Ruolan's fleeing figure, the leader's eyes were filled with coldness, rage, excitement, and a sense of determination. What a perfect supplement! Let her escape; after all, she couldn't escape my grasp. It would be far more interesting to toy with my prey before killing them.
Unaware that she was being targeted by a Level Three Zombie, Su Ruolan took out some water from her space and drank while searching for Monet's trail. Although frightened by the scene of zombies devouring humans and running wildly, they were all weak and frail; their stamina was insufficient to run far.
Even though Su Ruolan drank Spatial Water to replenish her energy, she hadn't rested enough for it to fully release; instead, it accumulated in her meridians, leaving her with a somewhat heavy feeling.
She quickly caught up with the main group and dealt with a few Common Zombies trailing closely behind. The other Common Zombies dared not approach any closer and merely followed from a distance.
Kong Xiang and Monet were overjoyed to see Su Ruolan return. Monet ran up to her and gently rubbed her head against Su Ruolan's leg.
Most of the rescued crowd looked at Su Ruolan with gratitude in their eyes and expressed their thanks in unison: "Thank you so much for saving us!" "You're truly our fairy benefactor!" "Yes, thank you! We really appreciate it!" "Fairy, what is your name?" Some people who couldn't find the words knelt on the ground and bowed their heads towards Su Ruolan.
Looking at these simple people stirred emotions within Su Ruolan as she recalled him and their unfinished business. You know, even though we are not together, we still hold onto our beliefs and fight for the same cause under this shared sky.
Su Ruolan hurriedly helped those kneeling to their feet and said repeatedly, "Everyone, please get up! I don't deserve this! I am Su Ruolan. We are not out of danger yet; let's discuss what we should do next."
The crowd fell silent all at once; some exchanged glances while others lowered their heads. Someone murmured, "We need to wait for the troops to rescue us." "Yes! We provided so many supplies; they should protect us! Why haven't they come yet?" "Exactly! Who would give them anything in the future? They are completely unreliable in critical moments."
"The troops might not be able to come." Su Ruolan surveyed the crowd still holding onto hope and had no choice but to deliver this cruel reality: "Mutated Zombies have appeared outside the city in numbers close to ten thousand. The troops and City Guard are engaged in fierce battles right now; the government has sent only 100 people for rescue—no more reinforcements can arrive."
"What? Only 100 people?" "What? Are we left without anyone?" "Have we been abandoned?" Panic spread through the crowd.
"Then let's go to Zone Four. The Isolation Gate there can protect us," a clever young boy said.
"But we just came from Zone Four, and the Isolation Gate has already been breached. Zone Four is no longer safe," Su Ruolan shook her head.
"What?" The crowd erupted in panic. Initially, they had some hope about reaching Zone Four despite the long journey, but now that they heard it had fallen as well, despair washed over them, and many began to weep.
"Sister Su, do you have any ideas?" a few resolute individuals in the crowd asked.
"At this point, relying on others is less effective than relying on ourselves. We must take up arms and fight back to save ourselves if we want to have any chance of survival," Su Ruolan said solemnly.
"What? How can we possibly fight those Zombies? You saw how strong they are; they run fast, jump high, and can't be killed. If we're bitten or scratched, we're done for. How can we fight?!"
"Exactly! We're just ordinary people; we're not like you Ability users. What can we do?"
"Help! Is there anyone who can save us?!" The voices of the people rose in a chaotic chorus.
"Everyone, quiet down and listen to me. Sister Su is right; our only chance now is to unite and fight back. As you've seen, death is inevitable either way. We might as well go down fighting and take a piece of them with us. Perhaps if we hold out long enough, we can wait for the troops to arrive!" A slender woman who appeared capable spoke up.
"Yes, if that's the case, let's fight them!"
"Fight! If I'm going to die, I’ll make sure they die with me." With no other options left, everyone resolved to give it their all, their eyes blazing with determination.
"Then what should we do, Sister Su? We're all listening to you," several steadfast individuals in the crowd began to ask.
