“Qin Zhi Han, how is the situation at H Base now?” Ma Commander asked.
“The situation inside is quite complicated. Colonel Jiang and Colonel Zhu can no longer maintain the facade of peace. Jiang is becoming increasingly domineering, while Zhu can negotiate but tends to be weak and indecisive. The civilians in the city are growing more dissatisfied with their management, especially after the recent incident where they abandoned the lives of hundreds of thousands, creating a significant rift between the public and them. This large group of people could be a force we can rally. Zhang Yu recently took a group from H Base, showing a complete withdrawal from the power struggle at H Base, but I suspect there’s more to it. Although the zombies outside the city were repelled, their leader did not die and seems to have developed human consciousness. Someone recognized him; he was originally a multinational corporation president named Rong Lu. After the apocalypse, he lived in Zone Two with his mother, who was beautiful and attracted unwanted attention, ultimately becoming a plaything for Colonel Jiang and several high-level Ability users. When Rong Lu went to demand her back, he was injured instead, and both he and his mother were thrown out of the city, only to be dragged away by zombies in front of everyone. To our surprise, when we met again, he had become the White Zombie Leader. His hatred for H Base is now irreconcilable,” Qin Zhi Han said with a hint of regret.
Su Ruolan hadn’t expected so much to happen at H Base after her departure. Qin Zhi Han turned out to be an undercover agent for the Huaxia Army at Jiangzhang Base.
“Now that H Base has become the focal point of contention among various factions, I suggest we start planning early. It’s no longer safe here,” Qin Zhi Han said seriously.
“Report! Enemy intrusion detected at Five Finger Peak!” a guard rushed in to report.
“Let’s go take a look,” Ma Commander immediately stood up and led the way out, with everyone hurriedly following.
At Five Finger Peak, several vehicles were winding along the rugged mountain road.
Looking through binoculars, Ma Commander handed the tool to Qin Zhi Han. Upon seeing the obvious star wheel emblem on the vehicles, Qin Zhi Han frowned. “Is this Squad? How did they find their way here?”
“Ever since the Mutated Tree appeared, the original maze in the mountains has lost its effectiveness. Our defensive strength is too weak,” Zhang Deputy Commander expressed his concerns about the recent instability in the mountains.
“Since they’ve come, they shouldn’t leave; it’s just right to collect some interest for Qi Commander,” Qin Zhi Han declared boldly.
“Alright, let’s give them a good beating. They shouldn’t think we’re easy to bully; anyone can take a bite out of us,” Ma Commander strongly supported.
“We cannot let them escape or discover that the maze has become ineffective,” Zhang Commander said fiercely.
Ma Commander turned to Qin Zhi Han and said, “This battle depends on you.”
Qin Zhi Han nodded repeatedly. "Fourth Battalion, follow me."
Lying in the trench halfway up the mountain, he watched as the convoy gradually approached the last peak of Five Finger Peak. "Fire," Qin Zhi Han ordered.
Everyone began to throw grenades downwards, and a shell was aimed at the first vehicle. It arced beautifully through the air before striking the first vehicle, lifting it several meters into the air before it crashed heavily back to the ground.
Immediately, the forces below adjusted their formation and opened fire fiercely in retaliation. The heavy machine guns fired wildly, and suddenly, a soldier from Fourth Battalion was shot in the head and fell.
"They have snipers. Find them," Qin Zhi Han said to Li Yuxuan.
Initially, they had occupied a high vantage point, giving Qin Zhi Han's side an advantageous position. Squad was pressed hard for a while, but as they regained their composure and entered combat mode, they activated anti-aircraft fire and sent out snipers, which suppressed Qin Zhi Han's firepower as well.
The convoy at the base of Five Finger Peak began to slowly turn around, preparing to retreat. "Aim for the last vehicle and fire," Qin Zhi Han commanded.
Suddenly, two shells soared into the air—one from above and one from below—intersecting in midair. One accurately struck the last vehicle below, while the other hit the only artillery piece on the mountain. The two explosions rang out simultaneously, completely trapping Squad's vehicles at the foot of Five Finger Peak and cutting off their escape route. There was no heavy firepower left on the mountain either.
The members of Squad disembarked from their vehicles, using them as cover while retreating towards the peak while engaging in combat.
Two more soldiers were shot in the head and fell into pools of blood. Li Yuxuan grabbed a sniper rifle, aimed at the moving figures below, and pulled the trigger; one person fell, causing a sudden shift in firepower from the left.
"Everyone charge!" Qin Zhi Han shouted, raising his arm high as he led the charge down the mountain. The soldiers of Fourth Battalion followed suit like tigers descending from a mountain. In close combat, both sides suffered casualties.
In this apocalyptic world where ammunition was precious and supplies were limited, both sides soon fell silent with their weapons. At this moment, they were less than 100 meters apart. Suddenly, a dirt curtain rose from the ground like an iron barrel, encircling a group of Fourth Battalion soldiers before collapsing and injuring those inside.
Qin Zhi Han raised his hand as countless rockets flew out, striking Squad members continuously. The rockets carried a slight electric paralysis effect; anyone hit would be immobilized for one or two seconds. Though brief, that time was enough on the battlefield. Su Ruolan followed closely behind as numerous Ice Spikes struck at these soldiers' hands and feet, rendering them combat ineffective. However, others from Fourth Battalion seemed accustomed to this chaos and continued to reap lives indiscriminately; heads rolled on the ground.
Suddenly, several figures appeared like phantoms, cloaked entirely in black with only their eyes visible. They moved stealthily and swiftly cut throats, killing three soldiers from Fourth Battalion in an instant—Squad's most skilled assassins. "Li Yuxuan, rally everyone!" Qin Zhi Han shouted loudly.
The members of the Fourth Battalion quickly gathered, with Ability Users standing at the outermost layer, tightly protecting the ordinary soldiers within. Li Yuxuan and others conjured a massive golden shield, firmly positioned in front of everyone. An Ability User from Squad launched a fierce attack, hurling a gigantic clump of earth directly at the golden shield, which pressed down low, nearly touching the heads of Li Yuxuan and the others.
The air shifted slightly as Su Ruolan moved gracefully, swiftly dodging an assassination attempt from one of the attackers. Qin Zhi Han caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye and was filled with rage. He conjured a fireball that struck the Earth Elemental User from Squad, reducing him to ashes and relieving some pressure from Li Yuxuan and the others.
Su Ruolan focused her mind, and after several merges with Monet, she gained new insights into the flow of air. Having narrowly evaded several strange attacks from assassins, she became increasingly familiar with the subtle energy fluctuations. She shot out a Wood Vine to quickly block an incoming blade, surprising the assassin who had not anticipated that Su Ruolan would foresee his attack direction. In that instant, the assassin was ensnared by the Wood Vine, its thorns piercing into his body, causing him to collapse in paralysis. Just like that, she captured three more assassins.
At this point, all other members of Squad had either died or been captured. Only the Fourth Battalion remained on the battlefield.
“How many of you came in total?” Li Yuxuan asked as he kicked one of the fallen assassins.
“They're committing suicide,” Qin Zhi Han said while scanning the surroundings, feeling something was off. When he noticed the strange look in the assassins' eyes, he immediately warned everyone.
But it was too late; all the assassins and captives had ingested poison and died instantly. Even those who had their jaws dislocated still perished.
“It’s no wonder Squad rarely has any information leak,” Qin Zhi Han remarked with a hint of regret as he looked at the dead bodies.
In this ambush, the Fourth Battalion suffered seven casualties. Although it was somewhat severe, they had defeated the notorious Squad, killing forty enemies and seizing vehicles, machine guns, artillery, and even discovering a substantial amount of food supplies. Overall, it was a victorious battle. After cleaning up the battlefield, everyone happily returned home.
On the deserted road lay countless sunken pits, bearing witness to everything that had transpired before.
