A thousand Zombies were charging forward, their once clumsy joints now moving with the agility of a normal human. They could bend, leap, and even move faster than before. Long white hair flew in the wind, and despite the missing muscles on their faces, bodies, and toes that revealed their ghastly skeletal structures—skull, sternum, and pelvis—there was an eerie vitality emanating from these lifeless forms. They were unafraid of bullets or explosives, driven only by a relentless urge to push forward, engaging directly in close combat with the S Base A Group. Their nails elongated rapidly, transforming into sharp blades that slashed at the soldiers' necks, penetrating their skulls and hearts. They were devoid of life, attacking with a deathly ferocity. When one fell, others swarmed over it. Hack, bite, tear, ensnare—a group of Zombies descended upon a single soldier, overwhelming him like a swarm of ravenous ants until all that remained was a pile of bones.
Overall, this batch of Zombies was more ferocious than before.
"Quickly report to the Young Commander and request reinforcements," the Regimental Commander said to Zhang Shou.
Zhang Shou surveyed the scene and replied to the Regimental Commander, "You must hold your ground until I return."
"I understand. Hurry!" the Regimental Commander urged anxiously. "I will hold the line."
Watching Zhang Shou's retreating figure, the Regimental Commander crouched on the construction site, firing his weapon while shouting through a loudspeaker, "Brothers, attack! We must hold our position!"
As soon as he finished speaking, several bullets struck the sandbags in front of him. The Regimental Commander ducked his head to avoid this wave of gunfire. What was happening? Why were there bullets coming from across? Were there enemies on the other side? Confusion bubbled in his mind as he peeked out again, only to see a bullet spinning toward his forehead. The last image he saw was an Orange-Eyed Zombie aiming a gun directly at him, smoke curling from the barrel.
It was the same Orange-Eyed Zombie that had besieged the city last time—the one that Su Ruolan and her group had encountered at the service area. At this moment, its right arm was severed at the elbow; apart from its pallid complexion and silver hair with yellow-green eyes, it looked almost indistinguishable from a human.
Its claws could extend and retract at will like a cat's paws; when not hunting, they curled up in its palms. Its fangs were hidden as well; when calm, it displayed a set of white teeth. Just as humans evolved, Zombies underwent their own mutations.
Behind it stood five other Zombies that clearly acted as leaders, directing their group to launch attacks against humans. Although most Zombies lacked consciousness, these instinct-driven mutants posed an unpredictable threat that instilled fear.
Gazing at the human construction site before him and the distant walls of H Base, the Orange-Eyed Zombie's eyes reflected a complex mix of nostalgia, rage, humiliation, and determination. It raised its gun and aimed at Zhang Yu standing on the distant wall, making a gesture as if to execute him.
The Company Commander of A Group discovered that the Captain was no longer in command. Anxiously, he moved to the Captain's location and was devastated to find that the Captain had already sacrificed himself. His eyes turned red, bloodshot like a spider's web. He picked up the loudspeaker by the Captain's side and shouted, "Brothers, the Captain has fallen! I will take command now. Everyone, fight fiercely! Avenge the Captain!"
Upon hearing that the Captain had fallen, some soldiers felt a surge of fear and began to retreat. What was there to fight for? They hurriedly fell back while still firing. They had joined the army merely for a meal, not to risk their lives. Among them were new recruits, experiencing battle for the first time, overwhelmed by the brutal ferocity of the Zombies.
The loyal followers of the Captain felt rage swell in their hearts and threw grenades into the horde of Zombies. When their ammunition ran out, they resorted to using knives, daggers, and wooden sticks—anything they could find as weapons. Those with abilities unleashed their full power; winds howled, hail fell like rain, and fire dragons danced wildly. In an instant, many Zombies were blown away by the fierce winds, crushed by massive hailstones, or burned to ashes by fire.
With this counterattack, the situation on both sides became evenly matched.
Seeing the tide of battle turn, the Orange-Eyed Zombie's pupils transformed into slits, revealing a fierce light. It began to chant in a high-pitched voice that was incomprehensible yet piercing. Invisible sound waves rippled through the battlefield, enveloping both the Zombie horde and the human forces.
The previously sluggish Zombies suddenly became energized as if they had been injected with adrenaline. Their expressions grew more ferocious and frenzied as they charged forward with renewed vigor. Even with broken arms or legs, they pressed on—using severed limbs to stab at human chests or rolling on the ground to bite at humans nearby. Even when shot in the head, they would still gnash their teeth and inflict wounds on humans. A large number of humans were infected by the Zombie Virus and quickly transformed into new Zombies.
Among those fighting against the Zombies, some soldiers were suddenly embraced from behind by half-Zombie comrades who bit them alongside two full Zombies. Many others held their guns in one hand while covering their heads with the other, desperately trying to shield their ears from the mental assault of the Orange-Eyed Zombie. They were on the brink of collapse; headaches throbbed painfully. Some could not bear it any longer and pointed their guns at their own heads; others writhed on the ground in agony, only to have their necks easily snapped by Zombies. Some soldiers with slightly stronger wills continued to fight while retreating toward H Base.
At that moment, Zhang Shou arrived with reinforcements. Upon seeing soldiers retreating, he immediately flew into a rage and shot dead the one leading the retreating group. "No one is allowed to fall back! Anyone who retreats will be shot! Everyone attack!"
The retreating soldiers were stunned into silence. Some glared at Zhang Shou with bloodshot eyes as if about to bleed from rage before recklessly charging toward the Zombies. Others shouted, "These Zombies have supernatural powers! We need to report back quickly and ask Young Commander for orders!"
"Anyone who dares disrupt morale in front of me will be executed," Zhang Shou fired his pistol repeatedly at those speaking out against him. With that threat hanging over them, no one dared voice dissent anymore; they could only rush toward the Zombies en masse. Although Zhang Shou appeared simple-minded, he was absolutely loyal and brave but lacked agility. While he suppressed dissent among his soldiers, he failed to relay this crucial information to Zhang Yu, resulting in a significant defeat for humanity.
With no way to retreat and death looming from all sides, those originally engaged in battle suddenly erupted with ferocity and launched suicide attacks. To avoid being too close and falling victim to mental attacks themselves, they activated their abilities upon contact with part of the Zombie horde and self-destructed. "If I'm going down, I'm taking a few of you with me!" Explosions erupted across the battlefield as flesh flew and bones shattered, annihilating a group of Zombies.
Faced with this tragic scene, all human soldiers were ignited with fighting spirit; when their bullets ran out, they charged forward fearlessly into self-destruction. Some determined soldiers even plugged their ears to avoid hearing anything and chose instead to fight against the Zombies.
Whether it was Zombies or humans, this battle was arduous for both sides; from dawn until dusk, no victor emerged.
