Liu He observed Wang Chao's silence and noted the slight softening in his tone. No longer were they at odds with each other. He said, "Zhang Ruyi is dead. Discussing these issues is pointless now. We can't come back to this supermarket again. What we need to think about now is how to escape."
Wang Chao turned to look back; the Zombies' speed had slowed down significantly, akin to a luxury car being replaced by a tricycle. Did these Zombies also have a limit to their sprinting? Although their pace had diminished, the sheer number of them was overwhelming. Wang Chao could see that at the entrance of the supermarket on the first floor, an endless stream of Zombies was pouring in, howling and pushing against one another.
Were those cries calls for their companions?
As Wang Chao ran toward the third floor, he pondered this. Just then, Ouyang En spoke up, "This supermarket only has three floors. Once we reach the third floor, where do we run next?" Without any hesitation, both Wang Chao and Liu He shouted in unison, "To the rooftop!" The three of them dashed up to the third floor at breakneck speed. There were just enough Zombies on the third floor for them to dodge through, and they finally climbed up to the rooftop via the emergency staircase. Once they closed the door behind them, they all breathed a sigh of relief.
"Have you noticed something?" Ouyang En suddenly said. "The Zombies' speed is increasing."
Wang Chao looked at Ouyang En in confusion and replied, "But didn't the Zombies chasing us just slow down? How can they be speeding up now?"
At that moment, Liu He seemed to grasp Ouyang En's meaning. He stepped to the edge of the rooftop, furrowing his brow with concern as he said, "If we consider that the Zombies' speed earlier was an acceleration, look at their usual speed now!" He pointed towards the Zombies wandering in the street. Wang Chao stood up and walked over to the edge; he saw that those Zombies were now moving at a pace similar to that of a child walking.
While still slower than an adult walking normally, if this trend continued, it wouldn't be long before these Zombies could run!
Wang Chao realized that he had never noticed this change over the week since the Zombie outbreak. If Ouyang En hadn't pointed it out, he might not have recognized it until it was too late—until the Zombies could actually run! What was happening? It was as if these Zombies had leveled up from one tier to another, gaining speed; would their strength increase as well?
If that were true, did humanity still have a chance for survival?
The situation had become dire!
"We need to go back!" Liu He insisted. "Staying here isn't a solution."
"How do we get back?" Ouyang En pointed at the transparent glass below, where zombies were visible. "Every floor is probably packed with zombies. We can't go anywhere. Zhang Ruyi is dead, all because of me. If I had run faster, Zhang Ruyi... she wouldn't have died..." Tears streamed down his face uncontrollably. Liu He glanced at him but remained silent, unsure if he was affected by Zhang Ruyi's death or simply disinterested in comforting Ouyang En.
Wang Chao returned and patted Ouyang En on the shoulder. "Life and death are determined by fate," he said. After that, he found himself at a loss for words. Wang Chao had always been cocky, but at that moment, he was finally speechless.
Ouyang En said nothing more, only weeping.
"We," Liu He pointed to a two-story building about five meters away. "Maybe we can make it there."
Wang Chao followed Liu He's gaze. It was a row of old two-story buildings. According to the people around, this building had been slated for demolition for over a decade, but for some unknown reason, while other old structures had been torn down, this one still stood tall among the high-rises, making it stand out uniquely. Wang Chao understood Liu He's intention with just one glance.
Liu He rubbed his hands together and said to the two of them, "Have you ever seen parkour?"
Five meters was no small distance, even with a running start. Wang Chao coughed and stretched his limbs, estimating in his mind whether he could jump across. Even if he could make it, would he get hurt? In such a brutal environment, twisting an ankle could very well be a death sentence. He looked at the zombies and then at the building across from them.
Zombies didn't need to sleep or use the restroom; waiting here would lead nowhere—a lesson Wang Chao had learned on the first day.
He glanced at Liu He and Ouyang En, nodding slightly. Liu He nodded back, and they waited for Ouyang En to express his thoughts. Ouyang En appeared hesitant but eventually said, "I've already dragged you down once; I don't want to do it again." He nodded as well. With all three having expressed their intentions, there was no more hesitation. Liu He tossed his two backpacks over first and said to the others, "I'll go ahead."
The two stepped back to give Liu He space as he accelerated and leaped off the edge of the rooftop! Moments later, with a thud, Liu He landed firmly on the opposite rooftop without being thrown off balance by inertia. Wang Chao thought to himself that Liu He was not an ordinary person.
Next was Wang Chao. He threw his backpack over as well and took several deep breaths before running and jumping like Liu He had done. As he leaped into the air, he realized that he could easily cover the distance—something he would never have dared to imagine before. Landing smoothly with a roll dissipated his momentum. Wang Chao had never performed such moves before, but now it felt effortless.
For the first time, Wang Chao clearly sensed that something within him was changing in ways he couldn't fully comprehend—this change made him stronger! He recalled how the zombies' speed had increased and felt an inkling that he might understand something important now.
When Wang Chao stood up, he turned his head and found Ouyang En already in mid-air.
"Not good!" Wang Chao thought to himself.
From the trajectory, it was clear that Ouyang En would never make it! He was still half a meter short!
Ouyang En seemed to realize this as well and shouted, "Brother Wang Chao, I won't drag you down this time!" It appeared that Ouyang En understood the gravity of the situation, so he shouted loudly. As Wang Chao had anticipated, Ouyang En was already descending, just half a meter away from the rooftop. It looked like he would crash into the wall and then fall onto the ground swarming with Zombies.
"Grab him!" Suddenly, Liu He's voice rang out.
Ouyang En had already collided with the wall. Upon hearing Liu He’s shout, he flailed his arms and surprisingly managed to grab onto something. When he looked closely, it turned out to be the strap of a backpack! Wang Chao rushed forward, and together they pulled Ouyang En up.
Liu He had previously abandoned Zhang Ruyi, but at this moment, he showed no fear and helped pull Ouyang En up. Wang Chao felt increasingly perplexed by him!
