Wang Chao was an emotional person. A single word from someone could make him either happy or angry. However, he never displayed his sadness or weakness in front of others. Wang Chao had cried very few times—he could count them on one hand. The first time was when he left the orphanage, the second was when his grandfather passed away, and the third was in front of Liu Xiaoxiao, who had turned into a Zombie. 0

Men remained silent while women wept. 0

Liu He also fell silent. The women who had been screaming were now quiet, and apart from the growls of the Zombies, there was no other sound. A group of people ran silently, unaware of their destination. They rushed out of the community; there were fewer Zombies on the street than in the neighborhood, but they were still not something this group could handle. Wang Chao's voice was hoarse, whether from overwhelming sorrow or sheer frustration, he couldn't tell. 0

"Walls are our best bet," Wang Chao said. "There are too many of us; we could easily get surrounded!" 0

Upon hearing this, Liu He didn’t respond verbally but followed Wang Chao’s advice, stepping onto a car and jumping onto the wall. The others followed suit, leaping up to the top of the wall. The Zombies moved slowly; by the time everyone had made it up, they had surrounded the base of the wall. Wang Chao reflected that the two-meter-high wall wasn’t particularly tall; if Zombies could jump, these seven or eight people would likely have no escape. 0

The wall was only a foot wide, and everyone dared not move quickly on it. On either side were outstretched arms of the Zombies, constantly howling; anyone who fell would face dire consequences. Wang Chao still held Yiyi tightly; she had stopped crying and lay on his shoulder with wide eyes, lost in thought. The atmosphere felt strange and oppressive as they walked in silence. 0

Suddenly, a stunning woman in front of Wang Chao lost her balance and began to fall sideways. A gasp shattered the silence as she tipped over. Liu Fushun in front didn’t have time to turn around; Wang Chao paused briefly and reached out for her, but it was too late—his hand missed her completely. 0

Her eyes were cold and filled with despair. 0

Then she fell into a horde of Zombies. 0

Liu He had already turned back to witness this scene. A barely perceptible smile flickered across his lips before he returned to his usual demeanor and lowered his voice. "Watch your step; otherwise, that will be your fate!" 0

Liu He’s chilling words sent a shiver down everyone's spine. Yet they remained silent; in just a few short days, they had witnessed too much death and too many tragedies. Perhaps they had grown numb to it all; even Yiyi's watery eyes showed no color. This relentless life on the run felt suffocating at times—sometimes more unbearable than death itself. 0

Ouyang En took over from Wang Chao and lifted Yiyi into his arms. 0

Wang Chao and Liu He had already cleared a path ahead. As everyone climbed down from the wall, they found there was nowhere to go. Without direction, wandering felt inevitable. However, Wang Chao had made up his mind; he could no longer stay with Liu He. He disagreed with many of Liu He's methods. Yet, Liu He, either intentionally or unintentionally, expressed his hope that Wang Chao would continue to accompany him on their journey. 0

Wang Chao simply shook his head. 0

... 0

After digging through, Wang Chao and Liu He finally cleared out a courtyard. They closed the main gate, and Wang Chao felt an overwhelming fatigue in his body. He thought to himself that he had probably used a kitchen knife to chop vegetables less in the first third of his life than he had killed zombies with one in this past week. 0

As Wang Chao lay resting in the courtyard, he heard Ouyang En calling from inside, "Brother Wang! Brother Wang! Come quick! There's good news!" 0

Wang Chao was jolted awake by Ouyang En's excited voice. He got up from the lounge chair and walked into the house, where he saw everyone gathered around a television. He could faintly hear a woman's voice coming from it, but due to poor signal or some other reason, the sound was distorted and unclear. As soon as the others noticed Wang Chao entering, they instinctively made way for him. Unbeknownst to them, both Liu He and Wang Chao had become the most authoritative figures in this group, as evidenced by the way everyone stepped aside. 0

Wang Chao looked closely at the television and saw the famous host Luo Xiaojuan speaking slowly. Wang Chao understood that she was doing this so that everyone watching could clearly hear her words: "At West City Original Department Store, the virus has been contained. All survivors must gather at the west side of the city. I repeat, at West City Original Department Store, the virus has been contained. All survivors must gather at the west side of the city." 0

Everyone held their breath as if exhaling would extinguish the broadcast. 0

"The helicopter rescue team has been dispatched. Those trapped should prepare to call for help in advance to ensure our rescue team can find you in time! I repeat..." 0

The television continued to loop this segment of video. Wang Chao felt a sense of relief; since the national military had intervened, the chances of survival for these people had significantly increased. It was certainly safer than wandering around aimlessly. 0

"Long live!" a woman exclaimed uncontrollably. 0

"As long as we stay in this house, we should be found!" Liu Fushun said. "I’ll go upstairs right now and write a big 'SOS' on the roof with blood. As long as the helicopter flies over the city, it will be easy for them to spot us!" With that, Liu Fushun picked up an arm from a zombie that had been severed and was still oozing blood and ran toward the rooftop. 0

This was the Old Town District of the city, where there were hardly any tall buildings. Sitting in the helicopter and looking down, everything appeared flat; any bright signs would be easily spotted. 0

Everyone seemed to believe that as long as they stayed here, they would surely wait for rescue. 0

Wang Chao, however, did not think so. Just like during the Zombie outbreak when he didn’t rush home immediately but instead went to the supermarket to grab a large amount of food and water, Wang Chao had never been someone who relied on others. He didn’t want to pin his hopes for survival on anyone else. Moreover, with Yang Mengying constantly worrying about her parents, Wang Chao and Yang Mengying briefly discussed their options and decided to head to the hospital first, then make their way to the west side of the city. 0

The hospital was located in the southwest, which was somewhat on their way. 0

When Wang Chao shared this decision with everyone, they looked at him as if he were insane. However, no one stopped him. Yiyi and Yang Mengying naturally chose to go with Wang Chao, while Ouyang En hesitated for a moment before deciding to join them. 0

The rest opted to stay in the house, waiting for rescue. 0
