After a long while, the screams finally ceased. The two women at the table had clearly lost their appetite, while the four men across from them found it hard to muster any thoughts of resistance. They could eat whatever they wanted and do as they pleased, but if their lives were lost, what good would the food be? Nothing was more valuable than one's own life.
At that moment, a young man who had been unconscious finally woke up. He sprang to his feet and, before he could steady himself, charged at Wang Chao, seemingly intent on avenging the earlier insult. However, before he could reach Wang Chao, the remaining four men rushed in front of him, blocking his path while shouting and pointing at the ground. The scene quickly descended into chaos, and Wang Chao couldn't help but find it somewhat amusing.
When the young man finally saw the headless corpse on the ground, he came to a halt. His eyes remained defiant, but he no longer made any move to charge forward. Wang Chao nodded in satisfaction. After a few moments, they exited through the back door and discovered that behind the small supermarket was a modest courtyard with several rooms. It seemed that these people lived here regularly. Wang Chao nodded; if there was enough food, hiding out here would be a decent option.
As winter approached, the sky quickly darkened.
The five men did not dare to neglect Wang Chao and intentionally left a room with a bath for him. Wang Chao felt fortunate that two weeks had passed and there was still electricity and running water available. This allowed him to enjoy a hot shower comfortably. He submerged himself completely in the water. "Is there anything more refreshing than taking a hot bath in winter?" he hummed contentedly.
Suddenly, Wang Chao heard the sound of a water bottle falling to the floor. This was a simple alarm device he had set up; if anyone tried to enter through the window or door, the bottle would fall and make a loud noise. Someone had entered! Wang Chao had been worried that those people might take advantage of his sleep to launch a sneak attack, so he immediately grabbed a towel and wrapped it around himself before quickly pushing open the bathroom door.
The bathroom was too cramped for effective movement; the living room that also served as a bedroom was the best place for an ambush.
However, it wasn't one of the five men who entered but Chen Feifei. Wang Chao's heart settled as he asked, "What are you doing here?" Chen Feifei looked at him but said nothing. Wang Chao glanced down at his towel and replied, "I was just taking a shower; I'll change my clothes and come out." With that, he stepped back into the bathroom to change.
Suddenly, the bathroom door swung open.
Chen Feifei walked in without a stitch on.
Wang Chao's eyes widened as he exclaimed, "What are you doing?"
But Chen Feifei once again embraced him tightly. Standing at 1.78 meters tall, Wang Chao found Chen Feifei—who was nearly 1.70 meters—pressing her head against his chest. He felt her warmth against him as she began to sob uncontrollably. The atmosphere became awkwardly tense as Wang Chao looked down and noticed numerous whip-like scars on Chen Feifei's back and buttocks—some were already scabbed over while others were clearly fresh wounds.
It had only been two weeks since the zombie outbreak; what had Chen Feifei gone through?
"They, they won't give us food, and they force us to do those things. If I don't agree, they hit me. If it weren't for you, I don't know what I would do in the future!" Wang Chao couldn't see Chen Feifei's expression pressed against his face, but he could hear the desperation and unbearable pain in her voice.
Wang Chao touched the scars that occasionally appeared on Chen Feifei's once smooth back and found himself at a loss for words.
"Take me away, please take me away," Chen Feifei said. "I am willing to do anything for you."
Chen Feifei lifted her head, and Wang Chao saw her beautiful face, reminiscent of their school days. Then, as she leaned in to kiss him lightly, Wang Chao turned his head slightly to avoid her lips. Instead, Chen Feifei kissed his cheek. Wang Chao smiled and then lifted Chen Feifei into his arms, leaning her against the cold wall.
The icy wall made Chen Feifei involuntarily let out a moan.
Wang Chao raised one of Chen Feifei's legs and then drew his weapon, attacking the most hidden place.
...
After setting up his water bottle alarm again, Wang Chao lay down on the bed and looked at Chen Feifei, who was staring wide-eyed at him. His feelings were mixed. The woman he once liked had finally become his, yet he felt neither joy nor excitement. It was as if he had longed for a toy car as a child and finally bought it after waiting so long, only to lose interest in playing with it.
Now, that was how Wang Chao felt.
At twenty years old, he could finally afford the toy he wanted at ten, but that passionate heart was long gone.
He turned off the light, plunging the room into darkness. Only the moon occasionally peeked through the clouds, casting various shadows in the small room. It reminded Wang Chao of his childhood when he often imagined those shadows as all sorts of monsters. As long as he hid under the blanket, those monsters couldn't do anything to him.
Perhaps it was the same now.
"What are you thinking about?" Chen Feifei broke the silence, her voice soft.
"I'm just remembering my childhood," Wang Chao replied, not shying away from the question. He stared at the ceiling, suddenly feeling an inexplicable irritation and anger rising within him. He didn't understand why, but quietly, he pulled a cigarette from his Spatial Ring and lit it. The faint scent of smoke wafted through the air, curling lightly upwards.
"Can I have one?" Chen Feifei asked.
Wang Chao didn't refuse; he took out another cigarette and handed it to her. Chen Feifei lit it without a word, showing no signs of coughing, everything flowing smoothly. Wang Chao had never seen her smoke during their time in university and had no idea when she had learned to do so, but he knew it wasn't something she had picked up recently.
Silence fell again.
For some reason, Chen Feifei began to cry. She tried desperately to hold back the sound, but in the stillness around them, Wang Chao could clearly sense her sobs. He remained silent, recalling a pretentious saying he once found amusing: "Why smoke? Because smoking only hurts the lungs, not the heart or the liver."
But it hurt both.
