The woman listened carefully for a moment before saying, "Ascending and descending are different. When we go up, it's slow and steady because the cage is really heavy. But when we go down, it happens almost in an instant. You and I might be able to leap to the third floor in such a short time, but what about her?" She nodded her chin toward Chen Feifei without looking directly at her.
This was indeed a problem. If it were just Wang Chao and the woman, their chances of escaping would be quite high, given their evident skills. Even if Wang Chao jumped from the third floor, he likely wouldn't get hurt. But Chen Feifei was another story; even a three-meter drop could injure her. For a moment, Wang Chao felt that this apocalypse might be humanity's rebirth.
Zombies were constantly evolving, but Wang Chao could also feel his own strength increasing. However, during this nearly month-long period, he had come to understand that this power was selective. Just like among countless Zombie Dogs, only one might evolve into a three-headed creature. Wang Chao had no idea how many survivors among them could harness such power.
He considered himself and the woman before him, as well as the Crossbow Brother they had encountered earlier, and even Liu He; yet Chen Feifei clearly did not belong to that group.
She was just an ordinary girl.
Noticing Wang Chao's silence, the woman raised an eyebrow, glanced at Chen Feifei, then back at Wang Chao. She shook the controller in her hand and said, "I have an idea. This girl is indeed pretty, but compared to me, she falls short." Just as Chen Feifei was about to protest, the woman continued, "We can throw her down; the Zombie Dogs will surely pounce on her. While they are distracted, I can press the descent button. Many Zombie Dogs will be trapped in the cage. Even if some escape, with our abilities, we should still be able to get away."
Chen Feifei understood that her life was not truly her own. She had realized this during their time in the supermarket; before the outbreak of zombies, she had been a goddess to many men who would go crazy over her words. But now she was just a pawn in someone else's game. If she weren't pretty, perhaps she would have already been thrown out to feed the zombies back in the supermarket.
She trembled at the thought but then remembered that Wang Chao had once pursued her. Could he really be so heartless? She couldn't find any words to counter the woman's suggestion and simply stared at Wang Chao.
"You keep her around only because of her looks, but when you meet someone better, you should learn to let go! By the way, I'm still a virgin," the woman continued when she saw that Wang Chao wasn't reacting.
Wang Chao didn't know whether what she said was true or not; however, it was indeed true that Chen Feifei wasn't a virgin. He wondered how this woman could tell. At that moment, Wang Chao's calmness stemmed from his struggle to find something in his mind that could convince him to protect Chen Feifei with his life. Unfortunately, he found nothing—except for that night a few days ago; he couldn't recall any moments spent alone with Chen Feifei that were worth remembering.
Wang Chao smiled—a bittersweet smile.
Chen Feifei noticed Wang Chao's hesitant expression. She didn't say anything but cautiously grasped his sleeve with her hand. When Wang Chao came back to reality and saw tears streaming down Chen Feifei's face, he sighed and said, "Let's think of another way. There are over ten Zombie Dogs down there and that Three-Headed Dog as well; even if we manage to trap half of them in the cage—that would still be an ideal scenario. Six or seven Zombie Dogs would be enough trouble for us!"
Wang Chao genuinely believed that the woman's suggestion was the best advice, yet he desperately sought excuses to convince himself that it was futile. He longed to escape, not because he feared being trapped above, but because he was deeply concerned about Yang Mengying and Yiyi. Wang Chao couldn't understand why he was so fixated on this matter; perhaps it was because he didn't want them to think he was already dead.
Perhaps it was Yiyi's words, "Uncle, you have to come find us!"
If it weren't for these thoughts, the food in Wang Chao's Spatial Ring would last him several weeks if he rationed it.
Seeing Wang Chao hesitate for a moment before refusing, the woman smiled lightly and said, "Don't take it seriously; I was just joking with you. How could I do something like that? If I were to throw someone, it would be you! Oh come on, you used to be so poor; why do you lack a sense of humor now?" As Wang Chao looked at the smile on her face, he suddenly felt an illusion as if she had never suggested sacrificing Chen Feifei.
Chen Feifei felt a sense of relief inside, yet her face remained tear-streaked, appearing utterly frightened as she leaned against Wang Chao, occasionally sobbing like a little white rabbit seeking comfort, evoking immense pity. Wang Chao gently patted Chen Feifei's head, signaling her not to panic.
"Slut," one woman smiled at Wang Chao while the other cried against him; both secretly cursed each other in their hearts.
Wang Chao was oblivious to the silent war between the two women. However, he wasn't foolish; a six or seven-year-old pretending to be pitiful while secretly cursing the other wouldn't easily deceive him. No one noticed the fleeting glimmer of unusual emotion in Wang Chao's eyes—aside from Liu He, no one truly understood him.
Wang Chao shook his head inwardly and said, "Actually, the suggestion about using a cage for the dogs doesn't necessarily require bait. Look at how most of the Zombie Dogs are beneath the cage; considering how fast it's descending, only one or two might escape."
The woman replied, "I was just joking before, but after thinking it over carefully, it really hinges on your little girlfriend. This place is about five stories high; when the cage drops, we have to jump out on the third floor. It's a matter of anti-gravity; both of us are in danger—she certainly can't manage it!"
Ultimately, it came down to strength. But unless they were truly out of options, Wang Chao didn't want to abandon Chen Feifei. If he were in their position without any power and two strong individuals were discussing whether to give up on him, feeling powerless and unable to speak would be agonizing.
Wang Chao fell silent.
