The woman wanted to say something, but Wang Chao suddenly heard what seemed to be the sound of an engine. The noise was faint and unclear, prompting Wang Chao to gesture for everyone to be quiet and cautious. Below, the Zombie Dogs had risen from their crawling positions, pacing in circles as if sensing something unusual. At that moment, the Three-Headed Dog also growled lowly, as if on guard against an unseen threat.
"Wang Chao asked the two of them, 'Did you hear any sounds?'
They shook their heads. Although they hadn’t heard anything, the strange behavior of the Zombie Dogs made it clear that something was amiss; otherwise, those dogs wouldn’t be so alert. Wang Chao closed her eyes and listened intently. The sound grew louder and clearer until the woman and Chen Feifei also caught it.
“ZTZ-99!” the woman suddenly exclaimed.
“What?” Wang Chao replied. “What are you talking about?”
“ZTZ-99 Main Battle Tank!” the woman clarified. “The sound is getting closer; it seems to be coming this way. I can’t tell if it’s just passing by or if it’s heading straight for us.”
Wang Chao's eyes widened in shock, as if she were staring at a beautiful woman who had transformed into a monster. Although Wang Chao had sensed the abnormality in their surroundings earlier, she could only hear the engine-like noise without distinguishing whether it was from an excavator or a tractor. Yet this woman could identify it directly and even specify the model.
It was impossible to have such impressive skills without being immersed in this field since childhood. Wang Chao thought to herself that this woman was not just a rich second-generation heir; could it be that the tank was sent specifically to pick her up?
The sound continued to grow louder, seemingly right at their ears.
From her elevated position, Wang Chao peered through the open doorway and caught sight of a corner of the tank. It had stopped about ten meters from the entrance, and soon after, a fully armed squad of soldiers emerged from behind it. These soldiers were armed to the teeth, holding submachine guns. Wang Chao had never been interested in such things since childhood and couldn’t identify their models.
At that moment, Wang Chao didn’t have time to admire the imposing figures of the soldiers; she shouted, “Watch out for the Zombie Dogs!”
In truth, there was no need for her warning because the soldiers had already spotted the Zombie Dogs. The ten-man squad immediately split into two rows—one crouching with their weapons drawn in front and another standing behind them. One soldier shouted, “Crossfire!” Then Wang Chao watched as the front row opened fire just as several dogs charged forward. Instantly, four or five Zombie Dogs were riddled with bullets from the submachine guns.
Wang Chao had no idea how many bullets that gun could hold. In an instant, the bullets poured out like a torrential downpour, but soon after, the sound of gunfire erupted from the rear, allowing those in the front to take advantage of the moment to reload. The entire movement flowed seamlessly, as if these ten individuals were a single entity, each person functioning as an organ of the whole.
Professionalism, truly fucking professional!
Yet, even with shooting as vast as the stars in the night sky, it only managed to pierce through the first five or six Zombie Dogs that charged forward. The subsequent Zombie Dogs pressed on, taking advantage of their fallen comrades to close the distance and forcefully reach the group. Long tongues lashed out from behind the bodies of their companions, and the soldiers in front hurriedly dodged, finally finding a brief respite from the relentless hail of bullets.
One Zombie Dog seized this opportunity and leaped forward, landing directly on a soldier and biting down. He quickly drew the Sabre from beside his boot and swung it to stab, but more Zombie Dogs were already rushing out. The captain shouted, "Fall back behind the tank! Get on top of it!"
The team fired their weapons while steadily retreating.
However, the man wielding the Sabre was overwhelmed by the continuous onslaught of Zombie Dogs. Even if his comrades wanted to save him at this moment, it was too late. He wore body armor that could withstand dog bites, but his legs, arms, and neck—though equipped—were clearly no match for their teeth. To be armed to the teeth was only true because he had yet to encounter any teeth!
Realizing his fate was sealed, he pulled out his handgun and ended his own life with a single shot.
The others had already retreated behind the Tank.
"At least he died with honor," the captain murmured quietly. Then everyone raised their guns to their left chests, closing their eyes and bowing their heads. Wang Chao immediately recognized they were mourning their fallen comrade.
"Hold tight to the cage! Open your mouth wide!" At that moment, a woman spoke up.
Wang Chao then saw her gripping the cage tightly with her hands and feet while opening her mouth wide. Damn! A thought struck Wang Chao's mind as he quickly turned to Chen Feifei beside him and said, "Do it!"
Afterward, Wang Chao heard an enormous sound that seemed capable of shaking the universe and altering reality itself.
Even though Wang Chao had grown up, the pressure still caused a ringing in his ears. Then he saw a massive hole appear in the back wall of the villa. The five or six Zombie Dogs had been blown to bits, and blood rained down like a storm. Wang Chao even felt chunks of flesh hit his back.
"That Three-Headed Dog is getting away!" The woman seemed to have recovered from the shock, as if she had experienced such chaos before. Wang Chao turned his head and indeed saw the silhouette of the Three-Headed Dog darting through the large hole created by the explosion. It ran a few meters away but suddenly turned back, its three heads and six eyes seemingly fixated on Wang Chao, sending a chill down his spine.
This Three-Headed Dog was much stronger than the one he had killed, Wang Chao's instincts told him.
Then he watched as the Three-Headed Dog vanished from his sight.
"Armor-piercing rounds!" the woman said. "If it were explosive rounds, the whole villa would have collapsed, and we would have died along with those damned dogs!"
Wang Chao nodded, somewhat understanding, but he couldn't help but feel curious about the woman's true identity.
"The danger has been eliminated; it's safe!" One of the team members stepped forward, surveying the area before speaking. Soon after, Wang Chao saw a squad of soldiers enter. A rope was tossed down, and after securing it, he lifted Chen Feifei into his arms while holding onto the rope. Before long, they reached the ground, and the woman slid down along with it.
"Thank you, comrades! Thank you, country!" Wang Chao stepped forward to shake hands.
However, the captain smiled and declined, then turned to the woman beside him. "Miss Shen Zhitao."
"That's my name," she replied with a smile.
"I've been ordered to escort you back," the captain said.
