In an instant, Wang Chao saw many people shedding tears and heard numerous murmurs of prayer. Indeed, the Zombie outbreak had happened so swiftly that most people were unprepared. Here, among the men, women, and children, countless individuals had fought their way back from the brink of death. Now that they had found such a safe place, how could they not be overwhelmed with joy? At least they no longer had to worry about Zombies crashing in while they tried to sleep at night. 0

“Alas.” Minister Hao sighed on stage and then said, “However, in order to better protect everyone, I hope you can abide by some rules here. We have three basic regulations. First, this place does not support idlers. Except for the elderly and children, everyone else—regardless of gender—must contribute to the Refugee Camp. Of course, we will take your professions into account and assign you suitable positions.” 0

Minister Hao continued, “Second, after ten o'clock at night and before five in the morning—when it is still dark—everyone must remain in their own rooms and not linger outside. Otherwise, we will impose strict penalties. The third point is that after each mission, any items obtained must be fully surrendered and cannot be kept privately. This third point is specifically for those who wish to join the military in the future.” 0

As soon as these three points were announced, the crowd began to murmur among themselves. Minister Hao raised his hand to silence them and then said, “Alright, everyone, line up in two rows. Each adult can receive a bag of rice or flour; you can choose which one you prefer. For the elderly and children, each will receive half a bag. If there are any elderly who have lost their children or children who have lost their parents, we will make special arrangements for them. Now, please form an orderly line!” 0

Upon hearing that supplies were being distributed, the crowd hurriedly pushed and jostled to form two lines. 0

“Alright, step forward one by one!” Minister Hao instructed. 0

Wang Chao and Chen Feifei stood in the middle of the line. As they watched the crowd move slowly forward, Wang Chao couldn’t hear what Minister Hao was asking at the front due to the noise of chatter. He only noticed that some people were filling out a form; some were assigned to rest on a platform at the back while others happily left with their allotted food. After a few minutes, it was finally Wang Chao’s turn. 0

Wang Chao stepped up, and Minister Hao smiled as he said, “Oh, this young man looks quite sturdy! Old Lei, he would be a good candidate for your unit.” He glanced at a middle-aged man in military uniform standing nearby. Old Lei nodded and replied, “Yes, indeed. He might even end up in my son’s unit.” Wang Chao observed that this man bore some resemblance to Captain Lei from earlier; they shared the same surname. From his tone, it seemed that Old Lei was Captain Lei’s father. 0

“What’s your name?” Minister Hao asked. 0

“Wang Chao.” 0

“How old are you?” 0

“Twenty-four.” 0

“Hmm, not bad. Were you in school before the Zombie outbreak?” Minister Hao asked. 0

“I had just graduated when this happened,” Wang Chao replied. 0

“Hmm.” Minister Hao nodded, lowering his head to write something on a piece of paper. Wang Chao leaned in to see that it was a simple identification card. Before long, a soldier handed him something, and to his surprise, it was a photo of himself. He had no idea when they had taken it. Once everything was ready, Minister Hao said, “Wang Chao, please wait at the table in the back for a moment.” 0

Wang Chao nodded. 0

There were already a few people waiting at the table. Wang Chao looked around; aside from a man in his fifties, the rest were about his age—no women, just men. Wang Chao thought that these people were probably part of the military reserves, and the older man was likely a doctor or something similar, considering that doctors were quite scarce during this time. 0

As they chatted idly, Wang Chao learned that the older man was not a doctor but rather a chemistry professor at a university. The others seemed to have no special backgrounds. At that moment, Chen Feifei had already received her rations and walked over to Wang Chao's side, waiting for him. Wang Chao glanced at her and said, “It looks like we have to wait until everyone else has finished before you can head back.” 0

Chen Feifei nodded and replied, “Then I’ll go back and tidy up.” 0

After she left, a young man spoke up, “Is she your wife?” 0

Wang Chao was taken aback by the question; images of Liu Xiaoxiao and Yang Mengying flashed through his mind before he finally said, “Yes.” He had just arrived here, and once he settled in, he would definitely ask Yang Mengying and Ouyang En if they had made it here as well. According to their previous agreement, they should have already arrived; however, finding them would have to wait until tomorrow. 0

Time passed without him noticing until only those at the table remained. There weren’t many—just over ten people—mostly young men aside from the older gentleman. The only difference was that among them were two women. 0

Minister Hao had now moved to the back and addressed those at the table: “We are keeping you here because you have greater potential. Professor Su, Dr. Liang, you may leave first.” As he spoke, a car drove up. The two men nodded and got into the vehicle. Minister Hao acknowledged them and said, “I’ll leave the next matters to you two; I’ll take my leave now.” With that, Minister Hao also entered the car. 0

Old Lei stood up and said, “I’m Lei Rumo; you can call me Commander Lei or just Old Lei for short. Some of you may know that our stationed military force is neither too many nor too few—around a thousand troops. However, after the Zombie outbreak, our forces suffered significant losses. It took us a week to regain control over the chaos within the ranks, but the situation remains grim; there are now only about a hundred professional soldiers left here.” 0

He continued, "Aside from the regular troops stationed here, there aren't many teams available for missions. And now, it is your time to serve the people and the nation! Out there, countless people are suffering from the torment of Zombies. We must rescue them from the jaws of Zombies, just as we rescued you!" 0

"They are your sisters, your brothers, your fellow countrymen! We cannot allow any wife to lose her husband, any elder to lose their child, or any child to lose their parents!" Old Lei said. "So, as a father and an elder, I ask you: are you willing to join the rescue team to save our compatriots?" 0

"Yes!" The thunderous voices echoed through the air. 0

"Good! Men should be brave in times of danger!" Old Lei shouted with great fervor. 0

"Women are no less than men!" Upon hearing this, a woman also shouted. 0

"Good, good, good!" Old Lei repeated three times before continuing, "Tomorrow at eight o'clock! Gather here!" 0
