"Where is Yiyi?" Wang Chao asked, gently patting Yang Mengying's head. 0

"She's in the lounge. I'll take you to see her," Yang Mengying replied, wiping her tears. Wang Chao nodded, and the two of them headed towards the door. Just a few steps out, someone called out to Yang Mengying from behind. "Yang Mengying!" They turned around, and Yang Mengying said, "Dad, why are you out here? Aren't you supposed to be working on your research?" 0

"Cough, cough." Wang Chao looked over. Yang's father appeared to be around sixty years old, while Yang Mengying was only about twenty-four or twenty-five. It was clear he had a child late in life; no wonder he had been so eager to introduce potential partners to Yang Mengying before—he was anxious for grandchildren. Dean Yang said, "Yang Mengying, this young man must be your boyfriend." He scrutinized Wang Chao from head to toe and added, "Strong and sturdy. I wonder what kind of work he does." 0

Yang Mengying shot Dean Yang a glare and replied, "What does work matter at a time like this?" 0

Dean Yang slapped his forehead and said, "Oh right! After the Zombie outbreak, everyone is on edge. What does work even mean anymore? In the face of Zombies, life is as fragile as grass. Just being alive is good enough. You two should enjoy your time together. I’ve been so focused on introducing this person and that person that I neglected my daughter's feelings. But what were you doing before? You know she had a thing for those delinquents back in high school..." 0

Seeing that her father was about to dig up old stories, Yang Mengying quickly interjected, "That’s all in the past! Besides, he’s not my boyfriend!" 0

"If he's not your boyfriend, then why were you two so close just now?" Dean Yang said with a stern face that somehow looked a bit endearing. 0

"I'm not talking to you anymore." Yang Mengying's cheeks flushed slightly as she added, "I still need to go see Yiyi with Wang Chao!" With that, she grabbed Wang Chao's hand and hurried away. Wang Chao shook his head helplessly; he had always heard about her father from Yang Mengying's perspective, which painted him as an old-fashioned matchmaker. But now that he saw the man in person, he found him quite amusing. 0

The lounge was at the end of the corridor. As Wang Chao opened the door, he saw Yiyi curled up on the sofa, staring at the static on the television. A sudden pang of pain shot through him; he understood that feeling of loneliness and helplessness all too well. From the age of five until he entered middle school in his teens, there had been no peers around him—no friends or family. 0

"Yiyi!" Wang Chao called softly. 0

Hearing that familiar voice after so long, Yiyi sprang up from the sofa and turned to look at Wang Chao. They locked eyes for nearly a minute before Yiyi suddenly burst into tears, snot and tears streaming down her face as she dashed across the room and leaped into his arms. 0

"It’s been a month since you last came to find me," Yiyi cried while pounding her small fists against Wang Chao's back. "Do you have any idea how worried I was? You're such a bad person for leaving me all alone!" Such words might sound strange coming from anyone else, but Wang Chao simply patted Yiyi's back and said, "But I'm here now, aren't I? Stop crying; it doesn't look good when you're upset." 0

"No way!" Yiyi said. "Unless you promise me you'll never leave me again!" 0

"Okay, okay!" Wang Chao replied. "I will never leave you again!" 0

Yiyi and Wang Chao had not known each other for long, just about a year. As mentioned before, since Wang Chao and Yiyi's cousin attended the same school, whenever Yiyi's mother went to work, Yiyi would spend her time with Wang Chao. Moreover, Wang Chao didn't have a proper job, so he had plenty of time to take Yiyi to amusement parks and ice cream shops. To Yiyi, Wang Chao might very well be the closest person to her. 0

Wang Chao would also share his life's disappointments with Yiyi. Although she might not fully understand, Wang Chao finally found someone who would listen to him. Such a relationship was probably rare in this world. 0

... 0

"This is how it is," Wang Chao said helplessly to Huangfu Ling. 0

Huangfu Ling glanced at Yiyi, who was clinging to Wang Chao. It seemed that training Wang Chao was out of the question. Huangfu Ling was strict but couldn't refuse a little girl's request. So he waved his hand at Wang Chao, tossing a key at him, and then said, "Tomorrow there will be assignments; you must be there!" 0

"Yes!" Wang Chao saluted in a rather unstandard manner, leaving Huangfu Ling speechless. 0

Wang Chao drove Huangfu Ling's Military Jeep back to his "home." Naturally, he would have to stay at the training base and explain things clearly to Chen Feifei. Thinking of this made Wang Chao feel a bit overwhelmed. He wasn't sure if Chen Feifei could be considered his girlfriend anymore; what he did know was that he no longer loved her. 0

"Uncle," Yiyi asked from the backseat, "are you going to marry my sister in the future?" 0

Wang Chao understood she was referring to Yang Mengying and couldn't help but chuckle. "Why do you ask that?" 0

"She's a nice person; I think she likes you too, but she's just too shy to say it," Yiyi replied. 0

Wang Chao felt helpless. Yiyi was only seven or eight years old—how did kids her age already understand what love was? 0

"Children shouldn't think too much!" Wang Chao said. 0

Yiyi stuck out her tongue and fell silent. 0

The car drove straight into the alley in front of Wang Chao's house. Just as it parked, they saw Zhao Dong struggling with a few young men. One of them, looking particularly impatient, kicked Zhao Dong to the ground. Wang Chao frowned and told Yiyi to wait in the car while he went to check it out. The group was kicking and punching Zhao Dong, and Wang Chao rushed over in a few strides, grabbing one of the attackers by the collar and yanking him backward, causing him to fall. 0

The others noticed Wang Chao and stopped their assault, looking at him with confusion. Since Wang Chao was new in town, he didn't recognize them, and they didn't know him either. They stared at each other for a moment. The man who had kicked Zhao Dong looked furious that someone dared to touch his brother and sneered, "Who the hell are you? Do you not know who I am? My dad is Li Dewei! I'm Li Xiuli!" 0

"Brothers, let's go!" Li Xiuli shouted as he prepared to charge forward. 0

Wang Chao had never heard of Li Dewei being someone significant. Seeing the group ready to attack, he knew he couldn't back down. He took a fighting stance. Besides, having just joined the Bioterrorism Security Department, he wasn't afraid of whatever background these guys had. 0

Suddenly, one of them grabbed Li Xiuli's arm and whispered, "He's the one who drove that car!" He pointed at Huangfu Ling's Military Jeep. 0

Li Xiuli's expression changed instantly as he cursed, "I won't stoop to your level. Let's go!" With that, he turned and left with his group. 0
