Wang Chao assessed the situation in the room. Old Lei would never let things escalate with Li Dewei. Although he was stalling for time, Wang Chao knew that his salvation did not rest with him; it was likely in Huangfu Ling's hands. Despite being a member of the Bioterrorism Security Department, Wang Chao's public identity was merely that of a squad leader in basic training. While the nature of the Bioterrorism Security Department wasn't necessarily classified, the less outsiders knew, the more convenient their operations became.
Moreover, he had saved Shen Zhitao's life; that favor had to be repaid somehow.
"Take him away!" Li Dewei shouted.
Shen Zhitao stepped forward and blocked the others, then whispered something in Wang Chao's ear. Wang Chao nodded, feeling a weight lift from his chest because Shen Zhitao had said, "Don't worry, the Queen won't let you call for nothing!" Wang Chao shook his head helplessly; the price for standing up for Zhao Dong was a bit steep this time. However, he was not one to regret his decisions. Before undertaking any action, Wang Chao always considered the consequences behind it. This time, he had simply underestimated the cost, leading to the current predicament.
Old Lei said, "Old Li, I will keep a close eye on this matter. After all, he's one of my people. If he confesses, I'll handle it." He glanced at Wang Chao, who understood that Old Lei was still on his side; otherwise, he wouldn't have hinted at such support. However, he didn't show it on his face. Old Li frowned slightly and replied, "Of course, I am a person of integrity in law enforcement. He will confess." With that, he squeezed Wang Chao's shoulder firmly.
Wang Chao was escorted to a vehicle; five vans drove off into the distance. Sitting in the back seat, Wang Chao felt Li Dewei's gaze piercing through the rearview mirror. If looks could kill, Wang Chao would have died countless times already.
In the interrogation room.
It was a small space shrouded in darkness when suddenly a bright light illuminated the area. As Wang Chao's eyes adjusted to the dark, they were blinded by the sudden brightness. At that moment, he felt a notebook pressed against his chest followed by an overwhelming force—he sensed it was like being struck by a hammer.
Instantly, Wang Chao found it hard to breathe; it felt as if blood might erupt from his throat.
"Just put your fingerprint here and you won't have to suffer like this," a voice echoed.
Wang Chao coughed several times before gritting his teeth and replying, "I didn't hit anyone."
"You've got quite a tough mouth," the person said. "Keep going."
Wang Chao felt a series of sharp pains radiating from his chest, as if his entire ribcage was about to tear apart. These people were professionals; they struck him with a hammer through the notebook, and the pain transferred mercilessly to Wang Chao's body without leaving any external marks. All these injuries were internal, and anyone who suffered such blows would take at least ten days to half a month to recover.
But Wang Chao understood the principle: confessing would lead to leniency, while resisting would lead to severe punishment. Moreover, Li Dewei clearly wanted his life. Wang Chao clenched his teeth, his hands forming tight fists, refusing to give the other party any chance to make him sign anything.
"Still holding on?" The voice rang out again, followed by, "Let me take over."
With that, the man stepped forward, wearing a set of brass knuckles, and aimed for Wang Chao's joints. This area too would leave no visible scars but would be excruciatingly painful. The man blocked the light, and only then did Wang Chao regain some of his sight from the blinding darkness. He squinted at the man torturing him and sneered, "If I survive this time, once I'm out, you'll die a miserable death."
Wang Chao's voice was low and somewhat hoarse, but it was clear enough for the man to hear. The man replied, "Alright then, my name is Logitech. Welcome to try and kill me; however, you probably won't get that chance. People like you should understand that some individuals are best left alone. Continue!"
Meanwhile...
"Huangfu Ling, this is my final concession. I have only one son; otherwise, even if you represent your family, I will drag him down with me before I die!" Li Dewei's voice was calm, indicating he had truly made up his mind. Huangfu Ling shrugged and replied, "The truckload of grain is yours now. And let me reiterate, this is solely my personal decision and has nothing to do with my family."
"I want to personally oversee his mission," Li Dewei stated. "If he dies then I will naturally be pleased; if he survives, I won't pursue him further!"
Huangfu Ling said nothing and walked away.
In the interrogation room...
Captain Lei held a document and said to Logitech, "Release him." Upon seeing that it was personally signed by Mayor Li Dewei, Logitech could only wave his hand dismissively, signaling for Wang Chao to be let go. Two soldiers stepped forward to support Wang Chao as he approached Logitech and whispered, "Wait for it." Logitech snorted coldly but remained silent. Captain Lei escorted Wang Chao to Huangfu Ling's office before leaving.
In the office were only Huangfu Ling, Wang Chao, and Shen Zhitao.
"Dammit!" Wang Chao muttered to himself as he sat on the sofa, feeling the sting of pain. He was about to lift his shirt to check for injuries when Huangfu Ling waved his hand and said, "Don't look. You won't see any wounds from the outside." Turning to Shen Zhitao, he continued, "I've taken care of what you asked me to do. However, Wang Chao, that doesn't mean you'll survive, because a bigger mission awaits you. You have three days."
With that, Huangfu Ling left the office without another word.
Wang Chao cast a grateful glance at Shen Zhitao. He knew that if it weren't for Shen Zhitao's help, he would likely have become a casualty. After all, even though he had some strength, it didn't guarantee that he could persuade Huangfu Ling to come to his aid; there was no shortage of talent in Huaxia. Wang Chao understood that unless he reached a certain level of power, he would always be seen as an insignificant ant in the eyes of those people.
In other words, he was just a slightly more capable Zhao Dong.
Power was still power! If his strength reached a point where no one could shake it, then not only Li Xiuli and Li Dewei but even Huangfu Ling would have to kneel before him.
"I can only help you this much," Shen Zhitao said. "Li Dewei is the mayor of a city after all. Especially in these chaotic times, if he wanted to use his resources to eliminate you, it would only take a moment. If it weren't for the fact that he's wary of you being part of the military, I might not have seen you today. Even though you're part of the Bioterrorism Security Department, Brother Huangfu might not necessarily save you. You have great potential, but that doesn't mean others will accommodate you."
Wang Chao didn't argue because Shen Zhitao was speaking the truth. If he were one of the Seven Great Families, even if he killed Li Xiuli, Li Dewei wouldn't dare act recklessly in public; that's what power meant.
"Are you from the Seven Great Families?" Wang Chao asked, feeling somewhat downcast.
"Come on, little brother, cheer up," Shen Zhitao replied with a playful tone. "Want me to call out 'Queen' a couple of times for you to hear?"
