Huangfu Ling and the others understood that if the Nuclear Power Plant exploded, the consequences would be unimaginable. Therefore, they needed to evacuate as quickly as possible. The military was busy all night, and Wang Chao and the other members of the Bioterrorism Security Department had even more important tasks at hand. Evacuating thousands of people was no small feat. Although Li Dewei spoke reassuringly, everyone in the Bioterrorism Security Department knew that this journey would be fraught with danger.
There was a simple reason for this: where there were more survivors, there were naturally more Zombies. Moreover, places like the capital city were not comparable to the small town where Wang Chao was located. If it weren't for the need for power support, the Nuclear Power Plant would never have been built in this city; someone like Huangfu Ling would likely never have set foot here in his lifetime. Thinking of this made Wang Chao feel a bit melancholic. Logically speaking, in the next decade, this small town's development would have been unprecedented, but now it seemed to end before it even began.
"The farthest range I can sense is five kilometers, with a danger level of two stars. Aside from some Zombie Dogs, there aren't any significant threats," said Xiao Wei, the youngest member of the Bioterrorism Security Department. He was sweating profusely, looking as if he had just been pulled out of a river. Today, Wang Chao learned that Xiao Wei could sense Zombie threats; however, such a skill could not be used continuously.
Shen Zhitao took out a towel to wipe Xiao Wei's sweat. Meanwhile, Da Qiang said confidently, "It's fine. Even if some Zombies come, I can take on a hundred by myself." Shen Zhiying coldly replied, "Can you take on a thousand or ten thousand?" Da Qiang didn't seem to mind Shen Zhiying's words and instead chuckled, his muscles trembling with laughter.
Shen Zhitao continued, "At seven o'clock, residents will evacuate on time, but we must depart by five o'clock. We need to clear threats and eliminate hidden dangers for the larger troop behind us. Xiao Wei's sensing ability can only be used once every two days; during the time he can't use it, we must personally check various locations. Aside from Xiao Wei, we'll split into three groups of three members each. Now I'll assign each group's members..."
Wang Chao was grouped with Shen Zhitao and Da Qiang.
Xiao Wei would fly with the families of research personnel and coincidentally ended up in the same group as Yang Mengying and Yiyi. Wang Chao thought that since Yiyi and Xiao Wei were about the same age, they should have plenty of common topics to discuss. Shen Zhitao escorted Xiao Wei onto the plane as its roar filled the air alongside tank sounds, truck noises, and the chatter of many people. It was already four-thirty; the Refugee Zone was brightly lit as everyone woke up.
"Five o'clock has arrived; let's go!" Shen Zhitao commanded.
Everyone nodded and exited through the side door. Once outside, Nine People immediately split into three teams; Wang Chao and his two companions headed northward. The Zombies that had gathered near the side door had all been cleared by the military. To the north of this small town lay a mountain; they were not far from it now, so there weren't many Zombies around here. Based on Xiao Wei's five-kilometer sensing range, it seemed that he hadn't yet reached up to the mountain.
Shen Zhitao worried that there was the city's largest zoo on that mountain. Since dogs could turn into Zombies, it was possible that other animals could too. If a few Zombie wolves or Zombie tigers showed up, it would pose a significant threat to everyone. Their route led them along a highway adjacent to the mountain straight toward the capital.
However, they wouldn't reach there today; their task was to deal with scattered Zombies in the north. This work could almost be left entirely to Da Qiang alone. When encountering solitary Zombies, Da Qiang didn't even flinch; he charged in directly and could smash a Zombie's head with one punch, sending brain matter splattering everywhere. Wang Chao watched in astonishment; this was incredibly brutal.
"Brother, I truly admire you!" Wang Chao exclaimed in awe of Da Qiang's harvesting machine-like strength and ferocity.
Shen Zhitao frowned, pinching his nose as he spoke to Da Qiang, "Da Qiang, how many times have I told you? You need to use a little less strength. Just kill them; why make such a mess with brains everywhere? It's disgusting." Every time he said this, Da Qiang would scratch his head sheepishly, appearing incredibly simple-minded, leaving Shen Zhitao at a loss for what to do.
The three teams continued to push forward step by step.
By seven o'clock, the three teams had not progressed very far, and even so, there were still some that slipped through the cracks. Wang Chao remarked, "This damn workload is too much. There's no way we can complete this mission. We've been fighting here for two hours, and it only takes twenty minutes for the front line to catch up. Plus, we haven't cleaned everything thoroughly; I suspect there are still plenty of Zombies around."
Shen Zhitao nodded in agreement. Such large-scale cleanup operations should naturally be handled by the main military forces. However, due to time constraints, the military had to transport supplies and protect civilians, making it impossible for them to leave their posts. Thus, this task was handed over to the Bioterrorism Security Department. While it wasn't particularly dangerous at the moment, the workload was indeed quite heavy.
Da Qiang seemed oblivious to everything around him; when faced with Zombies, he simply charged ahead like an unyielding harvesting machine. Countless Zombies fell under Da Qiang's relentless assault. Yet even with such an indefatigable reaper in their midst, the front line continued to advance.
A Tank led the way at the front of the convoy, smashing through any cars blocking the road. Following closely behind was an Infantry Unit of dozens of soldiers. Behind them were ordinary civilians, lined up on either side of the road while large trucks occupied the center. On either side of the civilians were armed soldiers providing protection; thus, food was in the middle, surrounded by civilians, with the military on the outer edge to maximize safety for ordinary people.
The aircraft had already taken off. Yiyi and Yang Mengying waved from above at Wang Chao as the helicopter flew over the crowd. To avoid attracting more Zombies with its loud noise, it flew as far away as possible and aimed to land on tall buildings whenever possible. Even in a small city, tall buildings were not hard to find. The Armed Helicopter was equipped with machine guns, so their safety was not a concern.
The remaining people were not so fortunate; they could only follow the main force forward. Wang Chao stood off to the side and looked back at the line of people behind him, feeling as if it formed an endless dragon made of humans that stretched out of sight. He had never imagined that thousands of people could form such a long queue; the front line had already reached Wang Chao's group while the tail had yet to emerge from the Safe Zone's back door, illustrating just how long this line truly was.
At that moment, Wang Chao felt a vague sense of unease within him—a feeling he couldn't quite articulate. He sensed that everything was going too smoothly—too smoothly for comfort. A massive horde of Zombies had yet to appear; this was contrary to their nature of pursuing living beings. Wang Chao couldn't shake off the feeling that there might be some conspiracy among the Zombies. But how could Zombies even think?
