It was already deep winter, and the winter nights arrived early. The cold wind howled fiercely, and everyone had started cooking. Looking back from the front of the line, wisps of smoke rose everywhere. Wang Chao and others were gathered around a campfire to keep warm. Today marked the third day since the main force had retreated; the leading troops had reached the mountain pass and would set off tomorrow, entering the highway. The highway was built along the mountains, and no one knew what the situation was like at the zoo on the mountain. 0

Shen Zhitao informed Huangfu Ling about this matter. Huangfu Ling frowned slightly and said, "Continue forward as planned. The mountain is too large; it's impossible to investigate it thoroughly. I just hope the zoo's fences are sturdy enough. Old Lei, the military needs to strengthen its vigilance. Once we bypass this mountain, we won't have to worry anymore." Old Lei nodded and replied, "I understand." 0

Before long, Wang Chao caught a whiff of rice cooking, accompanied by a small amount of beef jerky—it felt quite nice. 0

Da Qiang remarked, "It smells great, but it's too little. I used to eat seven bowls by myself." Due to their simplified approach, bowls and chopsticks had long been discarded; everyone could only use water bottles to hold rice. Those without cups had to scoop it into their palms or clothing. Suddenly, Wang Chao heard a child crying. Da Qiang immediately stood up and walked over to the weeping child. 0

The child seemed to say something to Da Qiang, who then handed over his rice from his cup and took out a few pieces of beef jerky. After doing this, he returned with a silly grin and said to those by the campfire, "Fat Kid, just like I was before—it's that time for growing! You can't let him go hungry." Wang Chao shook his head and said, "It's better not to give away your food. If you're full, you'll have the strength to protect more people. Isn't that more worthwhile than just one person?" 0

Da Qiang chuckled again and patted his belly, saying, "It's fine; with my build, missing a meal won't affect me at all." 0

Wang Chao smiled but said nothing. 0

Suddenly, Tang Blade Man Tang Feng stood up and said, "There's movement!" 0

Wang Chao listened closely but heard nothing. Shen Zhitao asked at that moment, "What's going on?" Tang Feng replied, "I sense danger." This middle-aged man rarely spoke in a day; now he suddenly opened his mouth, indicating he was quite certain. The Bioterrorism Security Department personnel were always at the forefront; upon Tang Feng's words, everyone immediately went on alert. 0

Aside from the howling cold wind mixed with human voices around them, no other sounds could be heard. Just then, with a swift motion, Tang Feng drew his Tang Dao from his back and pointed into the distance. The blade pointed toward a deep mountain shrouded in night; under the moonlight, it looked hazy and indistinct in the distance. As everyone puzzled over this, they suddenly heard thunderous roars echoing through the quiet night. 0

The sound traveled far and startled those eating; chaos erupted among them as fear spread. 0

At that moment, dozens of dark figures came rushing in like thunder from afar—against the pitch-black moonlight, they appeared as several white chains. 0

"Stand guard! Stand guard!" Old Lei's voice blared from the loudspeaker. 0

In an instant, a dozen shadows rushed forward. As everyone focused their gaze, they realized it was a pack of lions, each with eyes like copper bells and mouths like blood basins, their bodies drenched in blood, resembling man-eating beasts crawling up from hell. The lions had come down from the mountain, where food was scarce, drawn by the aroma of cooking; they never expected to find such an abundance of "food" here. 0

"Stop them! If they get into the crowd, the consequences will be unimaginable!" Shen Zhitao shouted. "Open fire!" 0

In an instant, gunfire erupted. The front line troops opened fire, but the Mourning Lions were incredibly fast. A volley of bullets flew toward them, yet none seemed to inflict any harm. The Mourning Lions did not hesitate; the shadows scattered like arrows released from a bow. Wang Chao felt a sense of dread as he heard heart-wrenching screams and tearing sounds erupt simultaneously. 0

Turning back, he saw blood and flesh flying everywhere, the crowd in chaos as people pushed and shoved, unaware of how many had perished beneath the feet of others. 0

A furious roar echoed in his ears. Wang Chao sidestepped just in time as a Mourning Lion rushed past him. He swiftly drew the dagger from between his legs; the black blade gleamed with a sharp light. Though it was called a dagger, it resembled a smaller longsword. The Mourning Lion missed its attack and turned to pounce again. Wang Chao held his blade firmly and charged forward, unleashing a flurry of strikes, but the Mourning Lion showed no signs of retreat. 0

With its massive jaws wide open, it lunged at him with steel-like teeth that caught Wang Chao's black blade between them, rendering it immobile. 0

The strength of this Mourning Lion was astonishing. Wang Chao let out a roar and exerted all his might to twist the black blade within its mouth, causing blood to spray everywhere. The Mourning Lion yelped in pain and released its grip on the blade. Seizing the opportunity, Wang Chao lunged forward and slashed at the lion's chest, blood splattering across his face as the creature howled in agony, nearly shattering Wang Chao's eardrums. To his surprise, despite the deep wound in its chest, the Mourning Lion showed no signs of dying. 0

The Mourning Lion raised its sharp claws and attacked from both sides, aiming to tear open Wang Chao's chest. 0

Wang Chao parried with his black blade; however, the lion's strength was overwhelming, pushing him back with its powerful paws. Seeing this, the Mourning Lion charged again with its mouth wide open to bite down on him. Wang Chao ducked low to evade and pushed his knife forward in a swift motion. Using the lion's momentum against it, he thrust into its body with precision. The Mourning Lion collapsed to the ground with a whimper—finally dead. 0

Wang Chao turned to see Shen Zhitao engaged in a struggle with another Mourning Lion while Shen Zhiying appeared to have dealt with one already. She rushed over to assist; her shooting skills were exceptional. With her submachine gun, she fired several precise shots that exploded the head of the Mourning Lion regardless of how swiftly it moved. Wang Chao thought to himself that she truly was a firearms expert; if only he had such precise control over his weaponry earlier, he wouldn't have been entangled with that Mourning Lion for so long. 0

"Help the crowd!" Shen Zhitao shouted. 0

Tang Feng wielded his Tang Dao like a baton, creating a protective barrier around himself. A blinding white light surrounded him, and no matter how powerful the Mourning Lion was, it could not breach Tang Feng's defenses. In contrast, the Mourning Lion was battered and bloodied, its body covered in wounds, slowing its movements. Seeing this, Tang Feng recognized it as the perfect opportunity. He unleashed the blade's protective aura, and with a swift motion, the gleaming edge pierced the Mourning Lion's chest. 0

As he withdrew the blade, it remained pristine, with not a drop of blood staining its surface—truly a treasured weapon. 0

The crowd was still in chaos; several Mourning Lions roamed among them. In just a few minutes, dozens had perished at the claws of these beasts, while nearly a hundred more had fallen victim to their own comrades' panic. The number of injured was beyond counting. 0
