"Damn, how many more are there!" Wang Chao and Da Qiang shouted after taking down two more. "Brother Wang, there are only three left!" Ouyang En, not far away, called back. Although there were only three left, they were all far from Wang Chao. Several trucks had been toppled by the chaotic crowd, and the supplies they carried were scattered everywhere, resembling a layer of frost on the ground. 0

The bonfire that had been lit earlier was now reduced to scattered embers, flickering occasionally. Fortunately, it was winter; the autumn leaves had already fallen, preventing a large-scale fire. Wang Chao wanted to help but found no foothold in the thronging crowd, making it impossible to assist. At that moment, Shen Zhitao shouted, "Get on the truck!" Hearing this, everyone understood and quickly climbed onto the vehicles, using them as a path to charge toward the nearest Mourning Lion. 0

They saw one Mourning Lion tearing into a person. The creature had ripped the individual in half at the waist; the lower half was nowhere to be seen while the upper half remained in its jaws, still struggling as if not yet dead. The scene was gruesome. Nearby, many civilians were trying desperately to escape but were trapped by those pushing from behind. 0

Shen Zhiying was still on the truck, swiftly drawing a Submachine Gun. With a few quick shots, she aimed to blow off the Mourning Lion's head. The creature was alert and swatted several people away with a single motion, causing the bullets to hit those unfortunate souls instead. Shen Zhiying furrowed her brows but dared not fire again. At that moment, a figure shot out—a Daoist—and Wang Chao realized it was Da Qiang. 0

Da Qiang leaped from a truck like a human missile and landed directly on the Mourning Lion. His strong arms wrapped tightly around its head, preventing it from opening its mouth. The Mourning Lion thrashed wildly beneath him in an attempt to shake him off. Just then, Wang Chao also leaped forward with his black blade in hand. 0

It must be said that Da Qiang truly possessed extraordinary strength; he managed to control the beast by himself. Wang Chao reached the Mourning Lion's front and slashed upward with his dark blade. The Mourning Lion let out a horrific scream and collapsed to the ground, taking Da Qiang down with it. Blood flowed anew from Da Qiang's previous gunshot wounds, but he seemed unfazed and continued to grin. 0

At that moment, gunfire erupted around them. Looking toward the sound, they saw two Mourning Lions being riddled with bullets as the crowd parted; it was Captain Lei leading two squads who were firing. 0

With that, all of the Mourning Lions had been dealt with. 0

However, the chaos caused by their presence did not subside; the crowd remained in turmoil, filled with cries and shouts. People were scattered everywhere—some aimlessly fleeing while others rushed toward the highway or back to the Safe Zone. Many fell victim to trampling in the chaos, suffering injuries or even death. 0

"The Mourning Lions have all been eliminated! Everyone stay calm!" Shen Zhitao shouted to the crowd, but those who had lost their senses paid no heed to his words. Old Lei's voice echoed through the loudspeaker as well but had little effect; people's minds were already too scattered for such verbal reassurances to make any difference. 0

At this moment, Huangfu Ling returned and saw that all of the Mourning Lions had been dealt with, yet the chaos among the crowd persisted. He grabbed Old Lei's microphone and shouted through the loudspeaker: "This is Huangfu Ling! Soldiers, listen up! Secure both ends of the street! If anyone dares to cross that line, shoot on sight! I repeat: if anyone dares to cross that line, shoot on sight!" 0

The discipline of soldiers is naturally stronger than that of ordinary people; upon hearing that all Mourning Lions had been eliminated, many began to calm down. However, upon hearing such orders over the loudspeaker, they still hesitated to act. After all, these were not zombies but living people—friends and even family members among them. 0

The command from Huangfu Ling had been issued for the third time. 0

Soldiers were duty-bound to obey orders, and even though they were reluctant, they opened fire. However, they did not aim at the people but shot into the air. The sound of gunfire echoed, and many stopped in their tracks; yet, a significant number continued to charge forward. At that moment, it was unclear who fired first, but once one shot rang out, others followed. In an instant, anyone daring enough to rush forward was turned into a sieve. 0

This tactic was swift and ruthless; within a minute, no one dared to take another step forward. 0

“Huangfu Ling!” Old Lei snatched the microphone and demanded sternly, “How dare you order the military to shoot at civilians!” 0

Huangfu Ling knew the situation had escalated. He handed the microphone to Old Lei, his tone calm as if he hadn’t given the order to fire on civilians at all. He said, “A few have been shot dead, but how many have died from being trampled? I fear the latter far exceeds the former. If I hadn’t ordered them to fire, even more would have died and suffered greater losses. If you have any issues with my actions, you can take me to a military court when we reach the capital.” 0

Old Lei shook his head helplessly and replied, “I understand this reasoning; it’s just…” 0

“Those in power must make decisive choices,” Huangfu Ling interjected. “The noise here is too loud; the Zombie Tide could surge at any moment. We need to repair quickly and evacuate tonight!” 0

Old Lei nodded in agreement. 0

The disaster caused by the Mourning Lion had finally calmed down here. Although they needed to speed up, it took four hours of bustling about before they managed to clean up. Upon careful calculation, over a hundred people had lost their lives in this calamity, around five hundred were injured, and more than a hundred were completely unaccounted for. 0

Scattered white rice lay everywhere as everyone began to gather it up; after all, there was still a long way to go, and every bit saved counted. 0

The members of the Bioterrorism Security Department had just endured a fierce battle. Two had permanently lost their lives in the struggle against the Mourning Lion, while many others were injured—one severely so, with half a leg torn off and barely clinging to life. Da Qiang was also biting down on wood as doctors forcibly extracted bullets from him. 0

The medical conditions here were dire; those severely injured fared worse than those already dead—at least they didn’t have to endure this final suffering. 0

Wang Chao looked around, and the scene was filled with sorrow, making it impossible not to lament. 0

"The noise here is too loud; we must evacuate overnight," came the voice of Old Lei from the loudspeaker. 0
