The three of them had already seen that the wild wolf was digging its front paw into the ground, ready to pounce at any moment. Opposite it, the Human Bear was also crouched low, muscles tensed, baring its teeth in a way that suggested it would love nothing more than to tear the wolf apart. The atmosphere grew tense, and then the wild wolf began to run in large circles, forcing the Human Bear to constantly adjust its position.
Even the three above couldn't understand what the wild wolf was up to, let alone the Human Bear. They watched as the Human Bear kept a vigilant eye on the wolf, emitting a low growl that seemed to warn it off. However, the wolf's speed only increased, faster and faster, until all that could be seen was a white blur and streaks of motion like flames beneath its feet.
Then Wang Chao heard a heart-wrenching scream. He focused his gaze and saw that a large gash had been torn open in the Human Bear's chest. Just as the Human Bear attempted to retaliate, the wild wolf darted away with a swift motion, circling around the Human Bear again. It became clear to them that the wolf intended to use its speed advantage to wear down the Human Bear.
Earlier, when these two beasts were fighting each other, Wang Chao had noticed that the Human Bear had tough skin and thick flesh. No matter how sharp the wolf's claws or how strong its teeth were, it would be difficult to kill it outright. Conversely, if the Human Bear was like a heavily armored tank, then the wild wolf was an agile assassin. Whether the tank could kill the assassin or if the agile creature could exhaust the tank remained uncertain; they could only wait and see.
However, it was evident that the Human Bear's intelligence was not on par with that of the wolf. It was said that wolves were highly intelligent and understood cooperative tactics. But here there was only one wild wolf. Wang Chao had no doubt that if another wolf joined in, this Human Bear would be toyed with until its demise. In a one-on-one situation, however, who would prevail remained unknown.
The wild wolf showed no signs of slowing down; it seemed tireless. The pained cries of the Human Bear echoed as its chest became a bloody mess from repeated attacks. Blood sprayed out in all directions due to the wolf's rapid movements, creating a gruesome scene. If this continued, eventually the Human Bear would be worn down by the wolf. Yet Wang Chao understood that even a wild wolf's stamina wasn't infinite.
When the wolf began to slow down, it would be time for the Human Bear to strike back.
Sure enough, as Wang Chao observed closely, he noticed that the wolf's speed visibly decreased. The Human Bear had long suffered enough of being on the defensive; with an opportunity presenting itself as the wolf slowed down, it raised its paw and struck at the wolf. The wild wolf attempted to dodge but found itself caught off guard by the bear's furious blow, which was now several times faster than before.
The wild wolf tried to leap over the Human Bear as it had done previously but clearly underestimated its speed this time. The high jump failed to evade the bear’s fierce strike; its claws landed squarely on the side of the wolf, tearing away a chunk of flesh and exposing several stark white bones beneath—demonstrating just how powerful that hit had been.
The wild wolf shot away like a meteor, blood spraying everywhere as if forming a red arch in midair.
The Human Bear seemed unable to contain its fury any longer; it wanted nothing more than to shred this wild wolf into pieces. Charging forward, it saw that it could not confront head-on; despite its pain, the wild wolf dodged left and right as they both ran. With every step they took, blood flowed from their wounds in torrents. This continued for nearly ten minutes.
In terms of stamina, there was no contest—the Human Bear was far outmatched by the wild wolf. If things continued like this, sooner or later, it would face severe consequences for its impulsive rage.
Suddenly, the wolf seemed to be enraged by something, charging recklessly towards the Human Bear. The next position of the Human Bear was supposed to be a small mound of earth, but with the wolf's pounce, it was knocked over. Its feet were suspended in the air, not yet having landed. Wang Chao felt puzzled, thinking that if he could just wait for half an hour, the Human Bear would exhaust itself, and at that moment, the wolf could easily sink its sharp teeth into the Human Bear's neck.
However, the wolf did not do that; instead, it lunged onto the Human Bear. This left Wang Chao utterly confused. Sure enough, the wolf and the Human Bear began to grapple fiercely. The wolf bit down hard on the Human Bear's neck, but the Human Bear's claws also plunged into the wolf's side where it had been injured. Neither beast showed any sign of letting go.
It was a desperate struggle that could very well lead to mutual destruction—no, they would likely both perish.
The three people on the cliff were captivated by this tense scene, their eyes glued to it without blinking. The howls of both beasts echoed simultaneously. Wang Chao saw blood flowing from the Human Bear's neck, staining the wolf's teeth red as it dripped down. At the same time, he noticed that the Human Bear's claws had penetrated deep into the wolf's body; he even caught sight of some unknown organ pulsating.
Seeing this, the three understood that it wouldn't be long before both beasts would lie dead.
As they expected, within just three minutes, both beasts lay still on the ground, no longer moving.
Wang Chao looked at his companions and said, "Should we go down and take a look?"
Shen Zhitao and Tang Feng nodded in agreement. The distance from where they stood to the stone platform was considerable; it took them over ten minutes to reach it. As Wang Chao looked around, he found the scene even more shocking up close—blood splattered everywhere and chunks of flesh scattered about. The three approached the two beasts and discovered that both were already lifeless. They hadn't anticipated such an outcome.
Wang Chao sighed and suddenly recalled the wolf's earlier actions. It could have survived; why did it choose to fight to the death? He then noticed the mound again and thought about what might be beneath it. As he approached to investigate, he suddenly heard a thunderous roar. The three turned their heads to see that it was indeed the wolf that had emitted that furious cry.
To their astonishment, the seemingly dead wolf trembled as it stood up unsteadily and staggered towards the mound. However, its severe injuries caused it to collapse again after only a few steps. A series of mournful sounds escaped its mouth, resembling cries of despair. Then, it turned towards them and barked threateningly a few times, but it was futile.
In the end, the wolf fell once more but kept its gaze fixed on that mound as if something important lay beneath it.
