After an afternoon of hard work, everyone managed to clear out one building for the crowd to stay in. Since the members of the Bioterrorism Security Department were set to head to the capital the next day, they went to bed early. By dawn, after a long day, everyone was asleep. The power supply in Yucheng had collapsed, leaving the entire city in darkness, resembling the Ghost City that Wang Chao had read about in novels. 0

A cold wind blew through, and the winter chill kept the night watch team of soldiers wide awake. Under the dark moonlit night, faint glimmers of cigarette butts could be seen. One soldier said, "I wonder when we'll get to the capital." Another replied, "These days aren't so bad; at least we have food and cigarettes. I just hope we can still trade smokes for food when we get to the capital." 0

"Not a chance," another chimed in. "With all the supplies in the capital, why would we need to trade cigarettes for food? They must have enough." 0

"If that's true, then it won't be a waste of our effort traveling this far," the first soldier said as he took a drag from his cigarette and exhaled a light puff of smoke that floated ethereally in the dark surroundings. The captain beside them coughed twice and said, "Enough chatter. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious. It's just us on watch tonight; if any zombies get in, we won't be able to take responsibility." 0

The soldier responded, "Captain, you know those zombies seem to be heading toward our little town. There aren't any zombies in Yucheng; otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to come in so easily without any danger. I don't know what those zombies are going crazy for heading toward our town, but at least we don't have to live in fear like before." 0

Another soldier added, "Exactly! I haven't seen a single zombie today. Captain, you should sit down and rest; don’t tire yourself out too much. It’s freezing at night and we can’t even start a fire—it's torture! They should come out here on watch too and see if they freeze their butts off in this cold without a fire." The captain shook his head helplessly and replied, "Stop complaining; it's just one day. Tomorrow someone else will take over. I'll go check around while you all rest here." 0

The others nodded, and one looked at the captain's retreating figure and asked, "Is there really no danger?" 0

"What danger could there be?" another scoffed. "The captain is just being overly cautious; he's always looking for trouble." 0

As the captain walked further away, he knew it was his team's turn for night duty. He circled around the neighborhood and confirmed that there was indeed no danger; perhaps he had been worrying too much. Just as he let out a sigh of relief, he suddenly spotted something moving in the park behind the community under the faint starlight. He quickly turned on his flashlight and discovered that it was a zombie. 0

He relaxed slightly; just one zombie wasn’t much of a threat. However, since they had already cleared out most of them during the day, he wondered where this one had come from. The captain slung his submachine gun onto his back and drew his saber, intending to silently deal with this zombie so as not to disturb anyone's sleep or attract more zombies with loud noises. 0

He stealthily approached the zombie from behind without being noticed. A smile crept onto his face as he thought about how those slackers were still slacking off—he was about to take care of a zombie all by himself! When he returned, he would definitely give those guys a good talking-to about not being careless with missions that involved their lives. 0

Having successfully dealt with the zombie, he sheathed his saber and headed back toward his comrades. However, upon reaching their previous spot, he found that the group gathered there smoking had vanished. Irritated, he thought to himself, "Those guys must have run off somewhere to hide from the wind while I was on patrol." With that thought in mind, he made his way toward the building at the back to see if they had taken refuge there from the cold wind. 0

However, after taking a few steps, he sensed that something was off. He noticed several cigarette butts on the ground, half-smoked. A single cigarette could be traded for food, and even the soldiers only received one every three days. If it weren't for the cold weather today, they wouldn't have smoked to keep warm. Yet here were several half-smoked cigarettes on the ground, and even one that hadn't been smoked at all. 0

He realized that those guys must have been so anxious that they resorted to scavenging for butts. There had to be some reason for such wastefulness. But he was just in the garden; if these people were in danger, they should have called for him immediately. Why had everyone vanished? The captain dared not think too much and simply pulled his Submachine Gun from behind him and moved toward the back of the building. 0

After walking just a few steps, he spotted a very familiar figure. Wasn't that Xiao Lu? What was he doing standing there? He felt foolish for worrying unnecessarily. With this thought, the captain hurried a few steps to reach Xiao Lu's side and patted him on the shoulder, saying, "What are you doing here? Have you been feeling generous lately? You took a few puffs and then stopped?" 0

But Xiao Lu ignored him, still facing away from the captain. Curious, the captain leaned forward to see what was ahead, only to find an impenetrable darkness—nothing at all. He gave Xiao Lu's head a light tap and said, "Hey, are you upset because I said something? Where is everyone?" Still no response from Xiao Lu; this time the captain truly lost his temper. 0

He gripped Xiao Lu's shoulder tightly and twisted him around to face him. Under the captain's forceful grip, Xiao Lu finally turned his head. The captain took one look and collapsed in shock. Xiao Lu's eye sockets were hollow; his eyes had been gouged out. At that moment, Xiao Lu gaped with his mouth wide open, revealing a bloody interior where even his tongue had been ripped out. 0

Then, Xiao Lu let out a chilling laugh as he approached the captain. Staring at Xiao Lu coming closer, the captain found himself frozen in place, forgetting to call out or get up. It wasn't until Xiao Lu was right in front of him that he snapped back to reality and instinctively tried to dodge away. Just as he stood up, he felt something behind him. 0

He quickly turned around and saw another team member who looked just like Xiao Lu—eyes gouged out and tongue missing, their face twisted in agony. Then he caught sight of a faint shadow flickering in the distance. Suddenly, everything went dark before his eyes; a sweet metallic taste filled his mouth, and then he knew nothing more. 0
