Zhang Fusheng remained silent, focusing intently on defeating the monsters. As he joined the battle, the situation gradually stabilized. When the last monster was kicked to pieces by Zhang Fusheng, everyone couldn't help but cheer. Shen Zhitao looked at Zhang Fusheng and said, "Did you see that? That's the strength of the Zhang Family." The members of the Bioterrorism Security Department nodded in agreement. Wang Chao sighed inwardly, wondering if he would ever be able to catch up with someone like him.
After a brief moment of celebration, everyone turned their attention to rescuing the injured. Among the Bioterrorism Security Department members, only Xiao Wei had been protected and remained uninjured; the others had sustained various injuries, especially Da Qiang, whose body bore deep gashes from the monsters. Meanwhile, a helicopter had taken off to fetch reinforcements from the capital. As Wang Chao watched the aircraft disappear into the distance, he thought of Yang Mengying and Yiyi, wondering if they were safe and whether they had reached the capital.
However, before the helicopter could fly far, it landed back on the rooftop. One of the crew shouted, "This is bad! There are zombies everywhere! They're swarming us by the thousands; we’re surrounded!" Though his voice was drowned out by the chaos around them, it struck everyone like thunder. Those closest rushed inside and climbed to the top floor. As dawn approached, a faint light revealed countless zombies surging toward them.
Looking around, they realized they were indeed surrounded by an overwhelming number of zombies.
Just as they had dealt with the black monsters, they found themselves trapped with no time to celebrate or mourn. Panic set in as despair washed over their faces; they felt their fighting spirit waning. Huangfu Ling climbed higher to survey their surroundings and confirmed that countless shadows appeared like a black tide closing in on their area.
"Isn't that the horde of zombies heading toward the small town?" Huangfu Ling exclaimed in shock. "Why are they coming back?"
Tens of thousands of zombies may not have been particularly special creatures, but their sheer numbers posed a threat that this few-thousand-strong team with just over a hundred guns could not handle. It had been mentioned before that these ordinary zombies were evolving; now they moved at speeds comparable to humans walking. Yet how could so many return from Yucheng South Gate?
Huangfu Ling ordered everyone to hide inside and not come out. He and his companions gathered in one room.
Wang Chao stood beside Huangfu Ling as Shen Zhitao's assistant. Across from them sat Zhang Fusheng, next to him were Old Lei and Li Dewei, who rarely showed himself among crowds. Li Dewei was sweating profusely and trembling slightly as he spoke up, "Well, we have a helicopter; we should hurry to the capital for reinforcements! I’ll go first since…"
Sensing the serious atmosphere in the room, Li Dewei instinctively closed his mouth but then continued, "If we get surrounded by zombies, how long will our food last? Our previous plans will be impossible to execute!"
"No one here can leave except for the pilots!" Zhang Fusheng declared firmly.
"Young man, how can you say that?" Li Dewei stood up instinctively upon hearing Zhang Fusheng's words, his face flushed as he argued, "Let me be clear: everyone here holds some authority; there's no need to risk our lives for those common folks! With two helicopters here, couldn’t we fit a few of us? Each person could even take someone along; isn’t that a good idea?"
Wang Chao let out a cold laugh in his heart, thinking about the difference between Li Dewei and Huangfu Ling. Even if Huangfu Ling had such thoughts, he would never reveal them. Even if you guessed his intentions, he would only tell you that it wasn't like that. In this regard, Li Dewei and Huangfu Ling were worlds apart, and even Wang Chao was not as good as them.
Suddenly, Zhang Fusheng slammed his hand on the table in front of him, causing it to splinter into pieces, startling Li Dewei into retreating. Zhang Fusheng said, "Before I came to Yucheng, Grandma Xu had just taught me that even if there's only one person left, I must bring him back to the capital. Huaxia will never abandon any citizen. If I hear similar words from you again, just wait to end up like this table."
Li Dewei couldn't discern the man's background but could see Huangfu Ling's respect for him. If he couldn't provoke Huangfu Ling, how could he dare to challenge the young man before him? Li Dewei didn't even dare to breathe loudly and remained silent in a corner.
Huangfu Ling said, "Even if we go to find reinforcements, regardless of how many people we can gather, can we defeat tens of thousands of Zombies? Moreover, the time is too slow; after all, they can't fly here! In that case, the delay is too long. Moving a large troop would take at least two weeks, right? Our food supply won't last two weeks. The original plan was to occupy a supermarket early tomorrow morning, but now…"
The room fell silent again. If there were enough food, it wouldn't matter if they surrounded the place for a year; after all, your Zombies wouldn't open the door. However, with the current food shortage and although there was no problem with the water supply, there was little disinfectant left. Who would want to drink untreated water? This series of issues indicated that five days was already the limit for everyone.
"Zombies will be downstairs by tomorrow morning?" Old Lei's weathered face showed a hint of despair.
"That's right!" Wang Chao replied. "According to calculations, they will reach downstairs by tomorrow morning."
"So we have one more day to prepare?" Old Lei asked.
Wang Chao nodded.
Old Lei said, "Since we still have a day, first arrange for the troops to set up defenses and try to buy some more time. Second, gather everyone and search house by house for any food supplies; collect everything we can. If we can last another day, we will. Immediately send pilots back to the capital for rescue; if they don't come in a day, we'll wait a day; if they don't come in two days, we'll wait two days. They absolutely won't leave so many of us behind."
Wang Chao wasn't too worried about this; he had enough food in his Spatial Ring to last a month. However, he couldn't reveal this information.
After making arrangements, everyone went off to complete their tasks. Just as they were about to leave the room, Old Lei's somewhat hoarse voice came through as he faintly asked, "I wonder what Lao Zhao said when he came to power back then?"
Everyone stopped in their tracks, silent, as Old Lei seemed to speak to the crowd, or perhaps to himself, saying, "It seems to be saying that Huaxia will never give up on any of its citizens."
