"On your birthday that day, I didn't even know. Last time, I was the one who celebrated it for you. You're the only child in your family. Listen to me, put down your weapons. We don't need a child to protect us!" Old Lei said as he walked down. 0

"My parents turned into Zombies during the outbreak!" Xiao Wu's voice came from downstairs, filled with tears. "I'm the only one left at home. I want to protect others too. I want to fight those damn Zombies!" 0

Old Lei tightly embraced Xiao Wu and said, "We are your family." Then he shouted loudly to everyone, "Why is no one stepping up? Do I have to kick each of you out?" 0

"We are soldiers, always ready!" A sparse voice rang out, which eventually merged into a chorus as everyone shouted together. No one was willing to back down; not a single person hesitated. They all knew this was essentially a suicide mission, but that was what soldiers were like—this was the army Old Lei had trained. Each of them was as resilient and tough as Old Lei himself. Even though they appeared somewhat flustered in the face of Zombies and were confronting such warfare for the first time, they did not retreat. 0

Old Lei's eyes brimmed with tears as he descended from the rooftop, speaking as he walked, "Today might be our last meeting. Tomorrow, we may be separated by life and death. But remember this: I, Old Lei, will always be at the front of the line, covering the crowd's retreat without taking a step back. There's a song that goes something like this..." Old Lei hummed a tune and then began to sing: "There's a truth that needs no explanation; soldiers should go to battle..." 0

"There's a truth that needs no explanation..." 0

Huangfu Ling was moved by the song as well. He patted the table and said to Li Dewei in front of him, "Mayor Li, get ready and announce the news." Mayor Li nodded, picked up his loudspeaker, climbed to the rooftop, and looked down. He saw countless Zombies roaring below, making him momentarily feel as if they could topple the building. He suppressed his inner fear, steadied himself, and cleared his throat before raising the loudspeaker to shout in all directions: "I have an announcement; please be quiet." 0

Li Dewei shouted several times before continuing, "We have been trapped here for a week now. If this continues, we will all die here. The Suicide Squad composed of soldiers is ready; at twelve o'clock sharp, they will pave the way for us and hold off the Zombies' movements. At that time, everyone should run as far as you can." 0

Li Dewei's voice was calm; it was unclear whether he had come to terms with life and death or felt that escape was hopeless. Others in the building climbed onto the rooftop or leaned against windows to listen to Li Dewei's speech. Silence fell over everyone; many had long since resigned themselves to death. Hearing Li Dewei's words felt like their last lifeline. 0

Everyone fell silent. 0

Li Dewei shouted several more times to ensure his voice reached every ear before reluctantly climbing down from the rooftop, his expression somber and lost in thought. The singing in the corridor continued, lingering in everyone's ears for a long time. Da Qiang turned seriously to Wang Chao beside him and said, "Brother Wang, make sure to kill more Zombies later; it would be worth it for this lifetime." 0

Da Qiang's serious expression made Wang Chao unable to refute him. Turning around, he saw Tang Feng already sitting on the ground cleaning his Tang Dao. Shen Zhiying and Shen Zhitao were also preparing themselves. Zhang Fusheng emerged from a room and said, "Looks like I'm destined to be the captain of this Suicide Squad." Wang Chao noticed that everyone from the Bioterrorism Security Department had joined the Suicide Squad without exception—even Xiao Wei wanted to join if not for everyone stopping her. 0

Wang Chao found it strange; he had spent his early life without friends or companions in an orphanage and couldn't understand why someone would sacrifice themselves to protect others. If Yiyi were here, Wang Chao would protect her even at the cost of his life. But now, he felt completely devoid of fighting spirit because he didn't know if his peculiar abilities would still work amidst a sea of Zombies. 0

"Wang Chao" quietly asked "Da Qiang" beside him, "Aren't you afraid of dying?" 0

"Afraid of dying?" "Da Qiang" scratched his head awkwardly and replied in a low voice, "To be honest, I am afraid of dying. I’m also afraid of the dark." 0

Seeing "Da Qiang" looking embarrassed, "Wang Chao" asked, "Then why did you join the Suicide Squad? If you wait until they open a path, wouldn't your chances of survival increase significantly?" 0

"Brother Wang," "Da Qiang" said, "even though I'm afraid of dying, I know that when danger arises, we can't let the women and children take the lead. I suspect this time we might not make it out alive. Brother Wang, among our team, I actually admire you the most. You're a college student and skilled in combat. Unlike me, I'm just a rough guy who knows nothing. I'm really happy to fight alongside you." 0

"Wang Chao" patted "Da Qiang" on the arm but didn't say anything. 0

"Huangfu Ling" walked out of the room and said to "Old Lei," "It's twelve o'clock. In two hours, we need to be ready with the Grenades. We'll throw them out of the second-floor window to push back the Zombies. Once we do that, the warriors will charge out and lead the Zombies towards the back door. We'll attract as many as we can, and then it's every man for himself." 0

"Huangfu Ling" patted "Old Lei" on the shoulder and added, "You and I will cover the crowd." This statement was made lightly, but only "Wang Chao," who was nearby, caught its true meaning. It sounded nice to say they would cover the crowd, but in reality, it meant they would run together and not become cannon fodder for these people. "Old Lei" didn’t respond; he simply patted "Huangfu Ling's" hand, and she nodded in understanding. 0

"Wang Chao" observed this scene intently. He wondered if "Old Lei" intended to abandon everyone to save himself. Shaking his head, he dismissed those thoughts. The members of the Bioterrorism Security Department had chosen to stay behind; was it really better for him to escape alone? Feeling restless, "Wang Chao" went to the room where "Little Wolf" was kept and stroked its fur. 0

Looking out at the blue sky and white clouds while seeing Zombies swarming below made him realize he hadn't had a good night's sleep in a long time. 0

"You know," "Wang Chao" said to "Little Wolf," as if speaking to himself as well, "there are really a lot of fools in this world. There are always some people who don’t cherish their own lives. What do they seek? Honor? Respect? They’ve lost their lives yet… I just don’t understand." 0
