The shouts echoed throughout the neighborhood.
Even Zhang Fusheng, who had long since departed, heard Wang Chao's call. His pace slowed momentarily before he continued forward. He did not look back, but it seemed he already understood what Wang Chao's shout meant. He glanced at Huangfu Ling, who lowered her head under his gaze. Zhang Fusheng muttered to himself, "If it weren't to save someone, I would have liked to turn back and fight."
Zhang Fusheng led the group away, but the number of Zombies surrounding the Bioterrorism Security Department remained unchanged. Occasional screams signaled the death of a member of the Suicide Squad. The remaining survivors gradually gathered together, all familiar faces—undoubtedly members of the Bioterrorism Security Department along with the father and son from the Lei Family. The rest had perished.
"A warrior should die on the battlefield, wrapped in horsehide, dying for a worthy cause. How tragic!" Old Lei shouted loudly. Wang Chao admired these people; after all, the members of the Bioterrorism Security Department possessed unique talents that minimized casualties in their fight against Zombies. Yet, none of these individuals frowned before their deaths; such is the way of man! "Old man!" Wang Chao said, "Was that story you told earlier true or not?" Previously, Wang Chao thought that Old Lei and Huangfu Ling were conspiring to escape, but he never expected that Old Lei would be the first to charge forward.
"Brother, if I were lying to you, would I be standing here?" Old Lei's laughter rang out.
The brief respite came to an end. Wang Chao had lost count of how many times he had swung his dagger or how many kicks he had delivered. "Watch out!" Ouyang En suddenly pulled at Wang Chao, just as a Zombie lunged at him from his previous position. Without time to express his gratitude, Wang Chao kicked away a Zombie that was about to attack Shen Zhiying from the side.
Everyone could see that it wouldn't be long before they became lunch for the Zombies. The circle around them grew smaller and smaller. Suddenly, Da Qiang shouted, "Everyone, follow me! Let's carve out a path!" As he spoke, he suddenly accelerated, charging forward like a human tank, knocking aside any Zombies in his way and creating an opening.
A chill ran down Wang Chao's spine; even if a path was opened, there were simply too many surrounding them. Da Qiang's reckless approach was tantamount to seeking death! Sure enough, after running about several dozen meters, some nearby Zombies pounced on him, tearing several gashes into his body. However, Da Qiang showed no signs of stopping and continued to run forward.
"Da Qiang!" Wang Chao followed closely behind him, barely managing to protect himself, let alone fend off any approaching Zombies. The members of the Bioterrorism Security Department behind them understood that Da Qiang was using his life to carve out a path for everyone! As he ran with tears streaming down his face, he said, "Run! Run! Finally, I have a day where I stand at the front!"
Tears flowed down Wang Chao's face as he shouted, "Da Qiang, why are you always so foolish!"
Without responding, Da Qiang scratched his head and grinned. He focused solely on running forward without dodging or evading anything, determined to knock aside every Zombie. Meanwhile, those behind him no longer needed to worry about the immediate threats; they could focus on self-preservation. A wall appeared ahead of them; behind it lay far fewer Zombies. If they could reach beyond that wall, survival was within their grasp.
The number of Zombies hanging around Da Qiang was increasing.
"I... I can only go this far!" Da Qiang said with a trembling voice, "I'm sorry everyone, after we climb over the wall, you all run quickly. I'm really glad to have known you all!" As he spoke, Da Qiang collapsed to the ground like a mountain, falling against the wall. Wang Chao followed closely behind Da Qiang and, seeing him fall at his feet, shouted, "Da Qiang!"
However, Wang Chao did not do as Da Qiang had instructed and escape over the wall.
Wang Chao stopped in his tracks, swinging his Black Gold Dagger and slicing down the Zombies that were biting Da Qiang. He shouted loudly, "You all hurry over the wall! I'll hold them off." There was no response. Wang Chao turned back in anger, only to be surprised to find that everyone had stopped in place, forming a circle around Da Qiang with their backs against the wall. Ouyang En spoke up, "Brother Wang, Da Qiang is also my brother."
Shen Zhitao added, "You've done everything for us; do you think we don't know you want to stay behind?"
Old Lei glanced at his son and said, "A soldier never leaves his comrade's body behind to escape!"
Shen Zhiying stated, "If you want to run, then go by yourself."
Tang Feng moved his Tang Dao slightly but said nothing.
"Foolish." Wang Chao lifted Da Qiang's body and faced the group who could have escaped but chose not to fight their way through the Zombies. He calmly said, "You say you're not foolish? I told you before to think about yourself more; look now, you've lost your life. I won't say anything more; it won't be long before we meet again below."
Wang Chao carefully placed Da Qiang's body against the wall and whispered, "If you get bitten later, then it was meant to be."
Suddenly, Wang Chao found himself less afraid of death. In this world, there are some things that transcend life and death; there are always people you would willingly protect with your life—even if it means guarding a corpse. At that moment, Wang Chao's cold heart finally began to thaw. Just as Liu He had once seen that Wang Chao's heart was different, this time Wang Chao truly opened up.
Wang Chao remarked, "To pass up a great chance to escape and guard a corpse... I think there aren't many people in this world as foolish as you all."
Shen Zhitao dealt with a Zombie, then turned to Wang Chao and rolled his eyes. "Don't flatter yourself," he said. "You talk as if you're not foolish. If you weren't foolish, just climb over the wall; no one is stopping you."
Wang Chao laughed again, thinking to himself, "Today, I'm willing to be the fool for once."
With that, Wang Chao charged forward and struck at the Zombie in front of him with a knife. Partner—what does it mean to have a partner? This is what a partner is!
