Outside the door, Shen Zhitao held Wang Chao tightly for over two hours without feeling tired at all. Compared to the effort Wang Chao had put into rescuing her from the Zombie encirclement, this was nothing. Hearing Elder Zhang speak, Shen Zhitao finally carried Wang Chao into the ancient study. "Elder Zhang, Elder Wu," she said, unable to bow properly while holding Wang Chao, so she merely nodded slightly in acknowledgment.
The two elderly men were not angry. Elder Wu stared at Wang Chao for a long time before shaking his head slightly and saying, "This young man is no longer human. I can’t sense any life force from him." As he spoke, his eyes glanced at Zhang Fusheng and then back at Elder Zhang, seemingly noticing something amiss with Zhang Fusheng as well. However, while he could reveal Wang Chao's secret, he could not disclose Zhang Fusheng's.
As the foremost figure in Huaxia and the head of the greatest martial arts family in the world, Elder Zhang could detect a person's health or martial arts foundation from their aura. Yet he found no such aura emanating from Wang Chao. There were only two possibilities: either the other party's internal strength was stronger than his own, making it undetectable, or Shen Zhitao was holding a corpse.
The first possibility was clearly ruled out since there were very few people in this world who could match Elder Zhang, let alone surpass him. The second possibility was also unlikely because everyone had seen Wang Chao’s chest rise and fall with his breathing, which disproved both assumptions. After a moment of thought, they concluded that he must have been infected by the Zombie Virus and undergone some mutation. If there was anything that Elder Zhang couldn’t comprehend in this world, it would undoubtedly be the Zombie Virus.
Elder Zhang asked, "Was he bitten?"
This question seemed directed at Wang Chao but also at Zhang Fusheng. "Grandpa, there's something I must tell you," Zhang Fusheng replied. "He was bitten; in fact, I was bitten too, but I haven't shown any signs of turning into a corpse..." Just as he said this, Elder Zhang waved his hand dismissively. Elder Wu nodded in agreement as Elder Zhang continued, "Remember, it must be done without leaving any traces."
Elder Wu left the room. The second floor was usually off-limits to family members, but today, due to Zhang Fusheng's return, two young women had quietly come upstairs to listen to him speak. If Zhang Fusheng hadn’t revealed that information, those two girls wouldn’t have had to die. However, there was no way around it; the world would never allow an infected Young Master to inherit from the Seven Great Families.
Zhang Fusheng was the sole heir of the Zhang Family. Elder Zhang could not permit him to have even the slightest mishap. This was also why there was only one daughter in the third generation of the Wu Family; both Elder Zhang and Elder Wu understood certain matters very well but were unwilling to speak about them.
If it weren’t for Zhang Fusheng’s impatience, he might have sensed that someone was outside. He knew what Elder Wu intended to do but didn’t make any unnecessary movements. Instead, he continued speaking: "The person I mentioned last time is him—Wang Chao." Elder Zhang nodded and stood up, signaling Shen Zhitao to place Wang Chao on the sofa.
Lying on the sofa with his eyes tightly shut, Wang Chao occasionally called out names.
Elder Zhang turned to the two of them and said, "I have devoted my later years to studying medicine for decades, but facing the Zombie Virus is a first for me. Those fellows at the Academy have never cracked it successfully; I can only give it a try. Moreover, that little brat has been bitten too; who knows what kind of trouble will arise later? I'll prepare a few prescriptions and see what happens."
Shen Zhitao nodded. If Zhang Fusheng hadn’t been bitten, whether Elder Zhang would save Wang Chao would still be a question. But now that Zhang Fusheng had also been bitten—even if Wang Chao were merely acting as a guinea pig—Elder Zhang would do his utmost since this concerned Zhang Fusheng’s safety as well. However, it was somewhat tragic to think about; there should be many others who had mutated besides Wang Chao. He encountered members of the Seven Great Families and met himself and Zhang Fusheng—but who could save those who had mutated?
Elder Zhang walked over to a row of bookshelves and gently pulled on a book. To his surprise, the bookshelf turned to one side, revealing a hidden chamber. Elder Zhang stepped inside while the others waited outside. After a moment, he emerged, holding a small pill in his hand. "His internal veins are damaged," he said, "but what puzzles me is that despite such severe internal injuries, he appears completely fine on the outside. It's truly strange."
Shen Zhitao and Zhang Fusheng exchanged glances but said nothing. On the plane, they had witnessed Wang Chao's external injuries healing at a visible rate.
After mixing the pill with water, Elder Zhang said, "This can be called a Life-Sustaining Pill. There was a time when I lost my inner strength and was no different from a dead man. Thinking back, it wasn't much different from this young man’s situation. Later, I sought out rare herbs in the mountains and found an unparalleled doctor who gave me a manual and had me take this pill."
Zhang Fusheng had heard Elder Zhang recount this story when he was younger. Elder Zhang continued, "After taking it, although my life was spared, all my cultivation was lost. However, if I practiced afterward, my progress would be incredibly fast."
The two understood that essentially Wang Chao's body could not withstand much power right now; they could only sacrifice some for the greater good. But Elder Zhang had mentioned some kind of manual earlier, which seemed to be related to restoring strength. However, he did not elaborate further. Shen Zhitao understood that after all, it was an ancient text of the Zhang Family; how could it be entrusted to an unknown person? In truth, Shen Zhitao felt satisfied that Wang Chao had awakened and was out of danger.
After all, Wang Chao had been in a coma for over a week. If this continued, there would even be questions about whether he would wake up at all.
As a member of the Bioterrorism Security Department, forcing Wang Chao to expend all his cultivation was undoubtedly painful, but it was currently the best option available. Zhang Fusheng furrowed his brow but remained silent.
"If I'm not mistaken, he should wake up soon," Elder Zhang said. "Little brat, prepare a room for him to stay in. I need to go prepare tomorrow's pills; you two can head out now." He waved his hand dismissively.
The two nodded. Shen Zhitao continued to carry Wang Chao as they followed Zhang Fusheng out of the Small Building and headed toward a row of bungalows at the back. Zhang Fusheng said, "That area used to store weapons, but it's empty now. You two can stay there for now. By the way, Wan'er and the others are also staying there."
Shen Zhitao nodded but suddenly felt an itch on his chest and looked down.
To his surprise, Wang Chao had opened his eyes. The dark brown pupils now had silvery lines that had faded into a brass-like color. He was blowing air toward Shen Zhitao; no wonder it felt itchy in front. Wang Chao asked, "Where are we?"
