Wang Chao had been told by Elder Zhang that it would take at least half an hour for him to wake up, but barely five minutes after stepping out of the Small Building, he was already awake. However, he still looked somewhat weak. It was understandable; after all, how could someone who had been in a deep sleep for nearly two weeks not feel weak? If Wang Chao could still be considered human, at least he didn’t immediately crave flesh upon waking, which was a good sign.
Shen Zhitao understood that the incident of Wang Chao being bitten must not leak out. Otherwise, the folks at the Academy would surely dissect him for research. After all, this was the first time Shen Zhitao had seen someone infected with the Zombie Virus who hadn’t turned into a Zombie—of course, Zhang Fusheng was the second. As Shen Zhitao and Zhang Fusheng tidied up an empty room, Wang Chao sat nearby, recalling the moment he transformed into that monster. Fear gripped him as he looked at his hands, imagining the changes, yet nothing happened.
Wang Chao could clearly sense that he still possessed that ability. Was it simply because he was too tired? He shook his head; for now, he had to stay here. Moreover, Yiyi and Yang Mengying were in the capital, and it had been a long time since he had seen them.
Meanwhile, Elder Wu had dealt with the two young girls without leaving a trace and returned to his study. Elder Zhang was engrossed in a book when he heard Elder Wu say, “Yun Hao, have you noticed the difference in their eyes?” Elder Zhang nodded and replied, “Zhang Fusheng has a sapphire-like line in his eyes. I didn’t notice it at first, but when I treated his injuries, I saw silver-white lines in his eyes. It seems this is a sign of mutation.”
Elder Wu nodded and asked, “Should I go…” He made a gesture as if to cut his throat. Elder Zhang shook his head and said, “No need. You should know that in this apocalypse, there are many crises but also many opportunities. This might be another path for humanity’s future development. The pioneers on this path are Wang Chao and Zhang Fusheng. Did you see? Although Zhang Fusheng was infected with the virus, nothing happened to him. This is likely due to his strong abilities and ample internal energy.”
“On the other hand, Wang Chao is too weak; it’s possible he can’t control the Zombie Virus right now. Given time, perhaps he will be able to manage it,” Elder Zhang continued.
“Would it be good to plant a time bomb in the capital?” Elder Wu suggested.
Elder Zhang replied, “You should know Zhang Fusheng’s character. He grew up alone without friends; naturally, he’s somewhat reclusive. But it seems he gets along quite well with Wang Chao. If one lives in this world without any friends, it would truly be too lonely… too lonely!” Elder Wu also shook his head slightly as if reminiscing about how they used to share drinks and food together a century ago.
However, for Zhang Fusheng and Wan'er—the third generation born into such an environment—it truly felt too lonely.
As everyone was cleaning up, many children from the Seven Great Families gathered around. They busily tidied up the house together, creating a lively atmosphere. But Wang Chao noticed that aside from one or two people genuinely working hard, most were just going through the motions—especially those women who seemed intent on crowding around Zhang Fusheng. Watching them made Wang Chao feel a mix of envy and jealousy; why didn’t he have so many beautiful women surrounding him?
Shen Zhitao seemed to see through Wang Chao's thoughts and slapped him on the head before saying, “Do you think it was easy for me to bring you back? Look at your eyes; they’re practically about to fall into that girl’s chest! Is it really necessary?” After waking from his coma, although Wang Chao wasn’t entirely clear about what had happened, he knew that only Shen Zhitao had brought him back, and he felt immense gratitude towards her.
Wang Chao smiled and then pulled Shen Zhitao over, making her sit down while he began to massage her shoulders. "How's that, Queen? Not bad, right?" Shen Zhitao was surprised by Wang Chao's skill; she wondered where he had learned it. "Not bad at all. Looks like you've done this for girls before."
Wang Chao remained silent, thinking to himself that she had no idea how much he had to please the orphanage director back in his days at the orphanage.
Everyone was bustling around, but they finally managed to tidy up the room. Daily necessities were brought over, and everything was in order. Zhang Fusheng said, "Sisters and brothers, starting today, Wang Chao will be living here. Shen Zhitao can stay with Wan'er. Wang Chao just got injured and needs to rest here. Everyone else can disperse now."
Wang Chao was the first person for whom Zhang Fusheng personally organized a room. The members of the Seven Great Families knew that Wang Chao and Zhang Fusheng shared a special bond, so they all came up to introduce themselves. There were so many of them that Wang Chao felt dizzy and hardly remembered any names, but he did notice that there were no members from the Huangfu Family.
Once everyone finally left, Wang Chao turned to Shen Zhitao and asked, "Are all of them from the Seven Great Families?"
Shen Zhitao nodded. Wang Chao continued, "Why do they seem like a flock of sparrows? Do they all live in the capital?"
"Those families certainly can't all crowd into the capital. When the Zombie outbreak first happened, they sent their children here to Old Zhang because they knew this was the safest place in the world. As for the heads of those families, they naturally wouldn't abandon their businesses to come here, which is how things ended up like this."
"It seems there are no members from the Huangfu Family," Wang Chao remarked.
It was a sore subject for Shen Zhitao; her head started to ache at the mention of it. She said, "You know that the Huangfu Family is a military family. Their members are all serving in the army and can't crowd here. However, there's something I need to tell you: on the way here, I heard Zhang Fusheng mention that you shot down a few planes?"
"I only had one thought in my mind at that time: kill. It seems like that happened," Wang Chao scratched his head and replied.
"One of the people on those planes was named Huangfu Huo, who holds a higher position than Huangfu Ling in the Huangfu Family. There were hundreds of eyes watching when you killed Huangfu Huo. Although it will take a month or two for their main forces to return and mobilize, once they come back to the city, the first thing the Huangfu Family will do is deal with you. What will you do then?"
Shen Zhitao was right; Wang Chao was just an ordinary person. For the Huangfu Family to target him would be as easy as crushing an ant. Moreover, his current strength had clearly diminished; he couldn't fight his way out like he did in Yucheng anymore. Wang Chao shook his head and said, "I can only take it one step at a time. If it really comes down to it, I'll have to run."
