After chatting for a while, Shen Zhitao went to tidy up her living space. Although Shen Zhitao knew Wan'er, they had only met a few times during the annual gathering of the Seven Great Families, so they weren't very familiar with each other. It was natural for her to want to build a better rapport to avoid any conflicts while living together. Wang Chao had noticed that aside from one or two people, most of them were older than him, making it feel like a gathering of young boys and girls. 0

Thinking about it, those who could stand on their own within the Seven Great Families were probably busy in their respective territories at this moment, unlike the leisurely life in the capital. Wang Chao moved his limbs a bit; he still felt somewhat weak since his previous injuries hadn’t fully healed, especially after Zhang Fusheng's brutal kicks that nearly cost him his life. 0

Wang Chao's external injuries had mostly healed, but some internal wounds would take longer to recover. At least he could walk like an ordinary person now, though his strength was far from what it used to be—he might even struggle against the elderly ladies fighting for seats on public buses. Just then, the door opened, and he saw the gentle and delicate girl named Wu Wan'er, who was Shen Zhitao's roommate. 0

She entered carrying a wooden tray with a bowl of porridge and a plate of vegetables. Wang Chao's eyes nearly popped out; ever since the Zombie outbreak, although food was plentiful, he had never eaten fresh vegetables—at most, he had some pickled ones. Seeing that plate of greens was more exciting than spotting meat. 0

Wu Wan'er said, "Wang Chao gege, I made this myself. Zhang Fusheng ge said you were injured, so I wanted to help..." 0

Wang Chao had been in a deep sleep for over a week and had just woken up. If Wu Wan'er hadn’t mentioned it, he might have forgotten about his hunger. But with her bringing in steaming food and chattering away, his appetite was already piqued. Without waiting for her to finish speaking, he grabbed the tray and picked up chopsticks to devour the food voraciously, leaving Wu Wan'er stunned. 0

Finally finished eating, Wang Chao nodded at Wu Wan'er with satisfaction and flashed a smile, his eyes squinting slightly as if he appeared harmless. He said, "Not bad at all, sister; your cooking skills rival those of a five-star chef." Wu Wan'er had been raised to be a competent wife rather than just another member of her family like others. 0

Thus, she was well-versed in both household duties and social etiquette. Everyone thought this was expected of her; hence she rarely heard compliments about her skills. Hearing Wang Chao praise her made her blush slightly. She replied shyly, "Really? It's the first time someone has said that to me." 0

Wang Chao chuckled and said, "I wish I could eat such good food every day." 0

Wu Wan'er smiled bashfully and pointed at the corner of Wang Chao's mouth, saying, "You have some rice stuck there." 0

Wang Chao quickly used his tongue to swallow the rice grain. 0

Wu Wan'er continued, "If you don’t mind, I can bring you meals every day from now on." 0

Wang Chao nodded vigorously; that would be fantastic since he was worried about where to eat. He asked, "What’s your name? I saw you earlier this morning... you’re that Wan'er?" 0

Wu Wan'er smiled and replied, "My name is Wu Wan'er." 0

Wang Chao nodded and said, "I’m Wang Chao." 0

"I know," Wu Wan'er smiled, causing Wang Chao to shake his head. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen smile in this world. Shaking his head, he reminded himself that he was a person whose life was in danger; he couldn't afford to dwell on such things. He nodded at Wu Wan'er and asked, "By the way, do you know where the Survivors are staying?" 0

Wu Wan'er shook her head and replied, "I'm not sure. When I arrived, I was already living in this military district, and there are many Survivors outside. Are you looking for someone? I can help you ask around." Wang Chao nodded and said, "That would be great. I'm looking for someone named Yang Mengying. Oh, right, her father is a hospital director, but I don't know his name." 0

"Okay, I'll ask around. As soon as I have news, I'll let you know," Wu Wan'er said with a gentle smile. 0

Wang Chao nodded. Finding someone in the capital city, especially now that communication devices were down, was like searching for a needle in a haystack. There were so many people just within the military district, not to mention those outside. However, Yang Mengying's father was the director of a hospital; even if they didn't live in the military district, they should be nearby. He figured they could find them within a week at most. 0

While Wang Chao was lost in thought, Wu Wan'er had already cleaned up the dishes and placed them on a wooden tray. She turned to Wang Chao with a sweet smile and said, "I'll take my leave now so I won't disturb you." "Oh, let me walk you out," Wang Chao quickly stood up. After all, she had cooked for him; he couldn't just sit there like a lord doing nothing. 0

As soon as they stepped outside, they saw quite a few members of the Seven Great Families gathered around, seemingly eavesdropping on Wang Chao and Wu Wan'er's conversation. This puzzled Wang Chao; were these members of the Seven Great Families really that lacking in discretion? It wasn't entirely his fault; he didn't understand the complicated relationships within the Seven Great Families. However, he noticed that they seemed intent on isolating Wu Wan'er. She merely smiled slightly at them before walking away without looking back. 0

Watching Wu Wan'er’s retreating figure made Wang Chao think of himself; his own silhouette as a child seemed just as lonely as hers. 0

At that moment, a young man in his twenties approached Wang Chao and spoke in an unusually mature tone for his age: "Brother, your name is Wang Chao, right? Wan'er is going to be our big brother Zhang Fusheng's wife. You better watch yourself; otherwise, I’ll make sure you regret it. Remember my name—I'm Lin Xudong." 0

Before Wang Chao could respond, a young woman stepped forward and said to him, "Wang Chao gege, you don’t have to be afraid of him. If you like her, go after her! I support you. It's just the Lin family; I'm Shangguan Pingjuan and I'm not scared of them." 0

After they spoke, everyone began chattering excitedly at once. Wang Chao thought to himself that the Seven Great Families were just like ordinary people when it came to arguing—though he didn’t hear any foul language from them. Listening closely, he noticed that most of the girls were on his side while most of the boys stood with Zhang Fusheng—though there were exceptions. 0

Wang Chao closed the door behind him; those who had gathered found it pointless and dispersed. 0
