When Wu Wan'er brought Wang Chao to the location, he saw Yiyi sitting on a small District Chief chair, staring at a rabbit plush toy in her hands. She would stroke the soft fur of the rabbit and then tug at its ears, her face reflecting a deep sense of loneliness that Wang Chao could see clearly. A wave of sorrow washed over him, reminiscent of his own childhood; just thinking about his days alone in the orphanage filled him with profound loneliness.
“Yiyi,” Wang Chao called out gently.
Yiyi, who had been sitting on the bench, seemed unable to believe her ears. Her movements paused as she lifted her head to look into the distance, where she saw Wang Chao standing with a smile on his face. “Uncle!” Yiyi exclaimed, abandoning her plush toy as she jumped off the bench and ran towards him, wiping her tears.
Wang Chao scooped Yiyi up joyfully, lifting her above his head and spinning around several times, nearly making her dizzy. Wu Wan'er nearby covered her mouth and chuckled lightly. Wang Chao brought Yiyi in front of him; she wiped her tears and said, “You tricked me again!” Wang Chao pouted and replied, “How did I trick you?”
“You said you wouldn’t leave me alone again. It’s been so many days; why did it take you so long to come find me?” As she spoke, Yiyi's tears began to flow again. Wang Chao quickly set her down and knelt beside her, using his hands to wipe away her tears. “My mom died, my sister died; you’re all I have left! Are you going to abandon me too?” She continued to hit Wang Chao's shoulders with her tiny fists.
Wang Chao quickly embraced Yiyi again, feeling her small head resting on his shoulder as he could even hear her sobs. He gently stroked Yiyi's head and offered an apologetic smile to Wu Wan'er, who was watching. Indeed, Yiyi had lost her father when she was very young and had lived with her mother alone. Just months ago, she had tragically lost both her mother and cousin.
It was hard for a child—especially a girl—to accept such circumstances. Yet Yiyi had never shown these emotions in front of anyone else except for Wang Chao. Today, seeing him return unleashed all the feelings she had kept bottled up inside: sadness, fear, anxiety, confusion—all erupted with her tears. Her cries seemed endless, tugging at Wang Chao's heartstrings.
“Don’t worry; no matter how far away I am or how dangerous things get, I will never leave you,” Wang Chao said earnestly. “That’s my promise to you.”
This serious side of Wang Chao was something Wu Wan'er had never seen before. Previously, he had mostly presented himself as carefree and unpredictable. His earnest demeanor suddenly reminded Wu Wan'er of a boy she had met abroad years ago—someone she liked but who never dared approach her again after learning about her identity.
“I will definitely marry you,” that boy had told Wu Wan'er back then. Over the years, she had forgotten about him, but she still remembered his gaze—it was exactly like Wang Chao's now. Yet that boy never fulfilled his promise; what about Wang Chao? Wu Wan'er didn’t know. Finally, Yiyi stopped crying and insisted that Wang Chao carry her.
Without hesitation, Wang Chao hoisted Yiyi onto his shoulder and turned to Wu Wan'er. “I’m going to find someone we know; do you want to come with us?” But Wu Wan'er shook her head and smiled at Wang Chao. “Brother Wang, you go ahead; I have other things to do.”
“Thank you,” Wang Chao said gratefully.
Wu Wan'er didn't say a word; she simply winked at Wang Chao before turning to leave.
"Uncle, that sister seems too young," Yiyi remarked to Wang Chao.
"What if she's young?" Wang Chao replied.
Yiyi mischievously said, "You two have quite an age difference; you can't get married!"
Wang Chao playfully patted Yiyi on the backside and said, "Why do you keep daydreaming at such a young age? Every time I meet a girl, you think I'm dating her. That's a dangerous mindset; it could lead to early crushes. By the way, I heard that Xiao Wei seems to really like you. Didn't he come back with you on the plane?"
"Don't mention him!" Yiyi said, looking quite annoyed. "I don't want to deal with him at all."
Wang Chao shook his head helplessly; it seemed today's kids had quite rich emotional lives. They arrived at the building, and Yiyi knocked on a family's door. Before it opened, Wang Chao heard Yang Mengying's voice coming from inside: "Is that Yiyi? What have you been up to? Why are you back so late? Where's Xiao Wei?" As soon as Yang Mengying opened the door, she saw Wang Chao carrying Yiyi and stood frozen for a moment, unsure of what to say.
Before Yang Mengying could speak, Wang Chao had already opened his arms. Yang Mengying hesitated for a second before throwing herself into Wang Chao's embrace, her voice trembling as she stammered, "I thought... I thought with all those monsters back then, I..." Wang Chao gently patted her head and reassured her, "I'm back. I'm back." Yang Mengying didn't respond but simply nestled against Wang Chao's chest.
After a long silence, what could be better than being alive?
"If you two like hugging so much, hug it out later; I'm so hungry! Isn't it time for dinner?" Yiyi chimed in from atop Wang Chao's shoulders. Wang Chao didn't react much, but Yang Mengying shyly slipped out of his embrace. She then said, "You haven't eaten either, right? I'm cooking right now; just wait a moment."
As they entered the house, Wang Chao said, "I haven't cooked in a long time either. How about we cook together?"
Yang Mengying nodded and walked into the kitchen with Wang Chao.
For months, Wang Chao had not been able to cook a meal like this. He reminisced about the days when he and Yang Mengying had teamed up in the kitchen. Back then, he was the head chef, and after Yang Mengying returned home from work, she would help him cook. This time, however, the roles had reversed. Wang Chao brushed aside his previous melancholy, feeling a sense of calm and tranquility fill his heart. But how many more days could such a life last?
The supply of vegetables here was limited, and the condiments even scarcer. Yet, to celebrate Wang Chao's return, Yang Mengying had nearly exhausted all the ingredients available. Just as the dishes were placed on the table, they heard Shen Zhitao shouting from outside, "Wang Chao, come down right now! Huangfu Yan is back!"
