"Wait for me a moment, I have a friend coming," Wang Chao said. "Then call her up to eat with us," Yang Mengying replied, standing up. Wang Chao nodded and said, "Okay, wait for me. I'll be right back." Yang Mengying nodded in agreement. As soon as Wang Chao stepped out the door, Yiyi, who had been quietly eating, chimed in, "Uncle Chao's luck with romance seems pretty good."
Yang Mengying remarked, "I never noticed that before."
"I didn't notice it either," Yiyi added.
While they were talking, Wang Chao had already made his way downstairs. Shen Zhitao spotted him and quickly walked a few steps to stand in front of him. "Wang Chao, you should know who Huangfu Yan is. He returned early, not for any other reason but to seek revenge. So many people witnessed you kill his second son, and just as many saw you transform into a monster. This time, it's going to be tough."
As he spoke, Shen Zhitao grabbed Wang Chao's hand and led him toward the military district, continuing, "Right now, there's only one way out—go find Zhang Fusheng. Also, it seems like your relationship with Wu Wan'er is decent. If you can get their help, you might have a chance to survive. But Huangfu Yan is from the same generation as Elder Wu. If he truly decides to come after you, you're in serious trouble. And if he spreads the word about you being a monster, there will be even more people wanting to kill you."
"So you're saying I have to die," Wang Chao stopped in his tracks.
"The sooner you act, the better your chances of survival. Hurry up and come with me," Shen Zhitao urged, her pace quickening and her face filled with urgency. Wang Chao understood that this time he was in grave danger; otherwise, Shen Zhitao wouldn't be reacting so strongly. Huangfu Yan was supposed to return in a month but had rushed back now—there was no need for outsiders to explain that it wasn't for Wang Chao's sake; something must have happened in the capital that required such haste.
"Let's talk after we finish eating," Wang Chao said calmly.
Shen Zhitao looked at him incredulously and said, "Eat? What time do you think it is? You can still think about eating? I really can't believe you! Don't think I'm joking; I'm serious when I say you're in real danger this time. At other times, you can be carefree, but right now, take this seriously!"
Shen Zhitao's tone grew increasingly urgent until she was nearly shouting by the end. Wang Chao knew she meant well and was genuinely concerned for him; however, he too was serious about the situation. "Queen," he said, "you can treat me like I'm carefree at any other time, but at this moment, I'm very clear-headed and serious."
Shen Zhitao stopped as well and released Wang Chao's hand, staring into his eyes. In his gaze, she saw no hint of hesitation—only determination and resolve that made it hard for her to refuse him. She recalled a previous occasion when Wang Chao had resolutely stayed behind to protect Da Qiang's body.
"I promised them," Wang Chao said firmly. "That I would call you up to eat."
Shen Zhitao felt an unexpected calm wash over him as he looked at Wang Chao. The tension and anxiety that had gripped his heart vanished completely. Taking a deep breath, he pushed aside thoughts of Huangfu Yan's return to the capital and asked Wang Chao, "Is it Yiyi and Yang Mengying?"
Wang Chao nodded and replied, "I just found their place, but it seems Huangfu Yan is already back. You were right; I’ve put myself in danger this time. This might be the last meal I share with them."
Just as Shen Zhitao was about to respond, Wang Chao cut him off, saying, "If the worst happens, I hope you can take care of them."
Shen Zhitao remained silent, simply nodding vigorously.
When they returned to the house, both wore smiles that belied the urgency of their situation. Wang Chao reminisced, "Back in the day, Yang Mengying and I often cooked together..."
In the military district.
"Even if I have to turn the capital upside down, I want Wang Chao found!" Huangfu Yan declared angrily. "My son cannot die in vain. Colonel Li, take your men and find Zhang Fusheng. Are you sure he brought him back?"
"Report to the commander, absolutely certain!" Colonel Li responded.
"Eat more; you need to grow!" Wang Chao said as he placed a piece of lean meat into Yiyi's bowl.
"Listen up! By order of the military district, everyone must search every inch for Wang Chao! This is a command from the commander! Move out!" Colonel Hu was rallying nearly all the troops in the capital, determined to find Wang Chao at any cost.
"I'm not bragging; my cooking skills are just a tad better than Yang Mengying's," Wang Chao said to the three of them, earning him a round of eye rolls. He quickly added, "What’s with those looks? Yang Mengying, you have to admit it..."
"Zhang Fusheng, you need to explain today where you've hidden that monster Wang Chao! Do you realize that your actions could put tens of thousands of people in the capital at risk? Old Zhang, this isn't personal vendetta; it's not just about my useless son Huangfu Huo. Think about those soldiers killed by Wang Chao and the safety of the people in the capital. I can't let this go; I won't let it go, even if he is your friend!"
Through the window, Zhang could see troops lined up searching for Wang Chao. He replied, "You handle this as you see fit."
"Uncle, when are you moving in to live with us? Right, Sister Mengying?" A single sentence from Yiyi instantly turned Yang Mengying's face crimson, while Wang Chao burst into hearty laughter.
"Wan'er, find Wang Chao and tell him to run as far as he can," Zhang Fusheng whispered to Wu Wan'er beside him. Although Wu Wan'er didn't know what was happening, she could tell that the military seemed intent on capturing Wang Chao, and judging by the atmosphere, it was likely a dire situation. Thinking of this, Wu Wan'er disregarded her ladylike demeanor and dashed out of the military district, soon breaking into a sweat.
"I haven't had such a delicious meal in ages," Wang Chao said as he patted his belly. He then gently touched Yiyi's little cheek and said, "Yiyi, Uncle has some things to take care of right now. Can I come find you after I'm done?"
"No!" Yiyi pouted. "You tricked me like this last time!"
"I promise I'll be back in ten minutes!" Wang Chao said earnestly.
"Then let's make a pinky promise!"
"Sure."
"Pinky swear, if you change your mind in a hundred years, you're a little dog for lying!"
