Colonel Li whispered something in Huangfu Yan's ear, and Zhang Fusheng had no idea what they were discussing. After a moment of hushed conversation, Huangfu Yan's tense expression gradually softened into a smile. Although Zhang Fusheng couldn't discern the content of their exchange, he knew it was likely unfavorable to him. He heard Huangfu Yan say, "Since that's the case, I won't say anything more. Justice is in the hearts of the people, wouldn't you agree?"
Zhang Fusheng was puzzled by Huangfu Yan's statement. According to his earlier assumptions, once Huangfu Yan handed over Wang Chao, the subsequent matters would naturally be handled by the Zhang Family's influence. As the Young Master of the Zhang Family, he had access to numerous resources. However, this old fox, Huangfu Yan, showed no signs of relenting.
"Listen," Huangfu Yan continued. "Zhang Fusheng, neither of us can pass judgment on Wang Chao. "Wang Chao is my friend," Zhang Fusheng replied, leaning in closer to Huangfu Yan.
Huangfu Yan opened his mouth as if to laugh but ended up with a grim expression instead. He whispered back, "Huangfu Huo is my son."
Zhang Fusheng fell silent. To be fair, had Huangfu Yan truly done something wrong? Perhaps not entirely; the military was known for its protective nature, especially when it came to one's own kin. It was akin to how Wang Chao would go to any lengths to eliminate anyone who harmed Yiyi; such reactions were human nature. Yet, Zhang Fusheng could not stand by and watch Wang Chao be killed—this too was human nature.
If one wanted to survive, one must grow stronger.
"Colonel Hu, gather the troops and the public for a public trial of Wang Chao!" Huangfu Yan commanded.
"Understood!" Colonel Hu shouted back.
"One hour from now at the eastern gate of the military district—a public trial for Wang Chao. Set up the platform; I don't want to see any mistakes. You understand what I mean," Huangfu Yan instructed.
Half an hour later.
"Colonel Hu, I've completed all the tasks you assigned me," a lieutenant reported as he approached Colonel Hu.
"Well done. Remember, this matter must not be disclosed to anyone," Colonel Hu said.
"Understood."
Meanwhile...
"The current situation is very unfavorable for us. Too many people have seen Wang Chao turn into a monster, especially those in the military. They will definitely want him dead. The only thing we can do now is to rally the masses! Time is too short; the military has a unified command structure, while we don't have that much time. Huangfu Yan sees this clearly, which is why he has arranged things so urgently," Shen Zhitao said.
Zhang Fusheng added, "That's right, time is tight. We must come up with a second plan."
"I'll take care of this matter. Get me a transport helicopter. If things reach an irreversible point and Wang Chao needs to leave, many others will need to go as well; otherwise, they will definitely be implicated. Bring the helicopter as close to the platform as possible. If it really comes to that, you need to hold them off for at least ten minutes so I can get the helicopter out," Shen Zhitao instructed.
"The helicopter is easy enough to arrange, but how will you get there? Aside from the capital, I think it will be hard to find anywhere else that is safe," Zhang Fusheng replied.

"I like him," Shen Zhitao answered without any hesitation.
Zhang Fusheng nodded silently in response.

The streets were crowded with people, while the military had already secured the front positions, clearly well-prepared. They stood silently and solemnly, forming a stark contrast to the chattering crowd behind them. Wang Chao had been brought up to the platform, and as he looked down at the sea of dark figures below, a headache washed over him. In reality, there was nothing he could do now; everything depended on Shen Zhitao and Zhang Fusheng.
Many people had rushed in from the outskirts; most of the crowd had no idea what was happening, while those who truly understood were still on their way back to the capital. Huangfu Yan's maneuver had nearly cost Wang Chao his life. On the platform, Colonel Li cleared his throat, picked up the microphone, and addressed the crowd below.
"I believe many of you are unaware of what is happening right now, but I can tell you." As Colonel Li's voice boomed through the loudspeaker, the crowd gradually quieted down. He continued, "Today, we are here to conduct a fair trial."
"Some may wonder why, in these times, the military still has the energy to deal with such matters. But I must say that no matter when it is, the law cannot be trampled upon—especially in these apocalyptic times! With the outbreak of zombies causing everyone to live in fear, some individuals take advantage of the chaos to commit heinous acts. If we do nothing today, tomorrow, every one of you present here could be a victim—it could be you or it could be him!"
"You all see this man on the platform. Under everyone's gaze, he has killed countless soldiers who protect our safety. You might find it strange how someone seemingly unarmed could have killed so many of us. To be honest, this man has become a monster—a carrier of the Zombie Virus—who knows when he might erupt and endanger others' lives!"
Upon hearing Colonel Li's words, the crowd began to retreat as if they had truly seen a monster. This was precisely the effect Colonel Li wanted. He continued, "But do not be afraid! Look at the countless soldiers in front of you; these are the people here to protect you. We have him under control now, but this is only temporary."
"The reason I brought him here is for you to decide his fate. It's simple: faced with someone who could turn into a monster at any moment—should we kill him or spare him? The choice is yours!"
