Leaving Old Zhang, Wang Chao was planning to find Shen Zhitao and Zhang Fusheng. As he retraced his steps, he noticed a man in black approaching him. The man wore a round hat and a scarf, making him stand out among the passersby. Since Wang Chao was already distanced from the crowd, the sudden appearance of this man piqued his curiosity.
However, Wang Chao didn't want to dwell on it; his mind was occupied with thoughts of practicing the Breathing Technique. As they brushed past each other, he paid little attention to the man. But after taking a few steps, he spotted something that resembled a wallet on the ground. Who would leave a wallet lying around? Did it really just contain three coins? Wang Chao picked it up, and it opened automatically, revealing a white piece of paper that fell out.
Wang Chao caught the paper in mid-air and unfolded it. After just one glance, he suddenly slammed the wallet onto the ground with force, kicking up a cloud of dust. The note read: "If you don't want anything to happen to Yiyi, come to Changfeng Square at three in the morning. I'll be waiting for you; remember to come alone." There were no other people on the road, so it was clear that the note had been left by the man in black.
Turning around abruptly, Wang Chao found that the man had vanished without a trace. Anger surged within him; he wished nothing more than to tear that man apart. Yet, there was no sign of his fury on Wang Chao's face. Those who knew him would realize that this calm demeanor made him even more terrifying. He refrained from acting impulsively because he understood that any rash move could endanger Yiyi's life.
At this moment, Wang Chao lost all desire to seek out Zhang Fusheng and Shen Zhitao. He silently quickened his pace toward Yang Mengying's neighborhood. Once outside the military district, he ran without hesitation, his speed increasing as anxiety gnawed at him. Arriving at her door, Yang Mengying opened it, but Wang Chao showed no signs of distress as he casually walked inside. The house was empty except for Yang Mengying, which chilled Wang Chao's heart; it seemed the note was not a lie.
Seeing Wang Chao, Yang Mengying appeared surprised and said, "It's already dark; Wan'er and Yiyi haven't returned yet. Have you seen them?"
Wang Chao smiled lightly and replied, "Yeah, I came to tell you about that. Yiyi and Wan'er are having too much fun; they're still at the military district and will be staying at Wan'er's place tonight. I heard Yiyi wants to sleep over with Wan'er..." He carefully fabricated this story because he didn't want Yang Mengying to worry. There were few people for whom Wang Chao would risk everything, but clearly, Yiyi and Yang Mengying were among them.
"You should stay for dinner..." Yang Mengying began but was interrupted by Wang Chao saying, "Oh no, I have a mission tonight. By the way, something significant will be announced in three days; many people were present today, but a large portion hasn't arrived yet. Within three days, everyone will know about it—it's related to human evolution. I don't have much time to elaborate; you'll find out soon enough."
"Oh, just be careful while carrying out your mission. You know I was really worried about you during Yucheng..." Yang Mengying said firmly, her cheeks slightly flushed. Wang Chao felt warmth in his heart and instinctively reached out to touch her face, which only made her blush deeper. "I have to go now," he said.
Yiyi, I will definitely save you, Wang Chao vowed internally as he turned to leave.
Time passed quickly as Wang Chao headed straight to the back mountain to practice the Breathing Technique. Initially due to his anxiety and later because of distractions in his mind, he struggled to enter a meditative state for an hour or two before finally achieving it again. The Breathing Technique was supposed to enhance one's cultivation through breathing alone; however, Wang Chao realized that even slight distractions made it difficult for him to practice effectively.
Before long, feeling frustrated, Wang Chao returned to the military district but still found no sign of Wan'er or Yiyi. Resigned now, he concocted another story for Shen Zhitao who shared a room with Wan'er and wasted no time as he disappeared into the thick night. This winter had yet to see snow fall, but the biting cold wind grew increasingly fierce.
Wang Chao quietly scaled the ten-meter-high wall and made his way to Changfeng Square. The incessant howling of Zombies added an eerie atmosphere to the night. Upon reaching the edge of the square, he saw a dense mass of Zombies surrounding the center, but he couldn't estimate just how many there were. However, under the flickering moonlight, he noticed that two figures were tied to the flagpoles meant for raising flags in the middle of the square.
One was large, and the other small; who else could they be but Yiyi and Wu Wan'er? This sight filled Wang Chao with rage. If I get my hands on you, I will make sure you suffer a fate worse than death! he thought furiously. There were simply too many Zombies surrounding the flagpoles. To rescue Yiyi and Wu Wan'er, he would need to lure these Zombies away, but at that moment, Wang Chao dared not act recklessly, knowing that a mysterious figure who had captured them was lurking in the darkness.
Wang Chao felt like an ant on a hot pan, anxiously pacing back and forth. On one hand, he needed to save the two girls; on the other hand, he couldn't attract the attention of the mysterious person. What was he supposed to do? Behind him, more Zombies were approaching, and the pressure from all sides was suffocating.
The man in black had left him a note, calling him here with the intention of dealing with him; Yiyi and Wan'er were merely tools to threaten him. Since they wanted to target him, he had no choice but to step forward; otherwise... Just then, before Wang Chao could ponder for long, a strong sense of danger washed over him. Even though his strength had significantly diminished, his instinct for danger was sharper than ever.
In a swift motion, Wang Chao dodged an attack.
A silenced Sniper Rifle!
Just as Wang Chao registered this thought, his body continued moving without hesitation. With several agile rolls, he managed to evade one sniper shot after another. Judging by the intervals between shots, there were at least two snipers surrounding the square! Such professional marksmanship could only belong to trained soldiers; thus, it was undoubtedly Huangfu Yan who was trying to kill him this time.
Several bullets came down, but Wang Chao evaded them all.
In the distance.
"It’s you who made your move, Mountain Gale. That kid has decent skills but is far from your match."
