After the upgrade, everyone had just recovered from their joyful mood when they began another round of searching for missing persons. The previous groups remained the same, but they centered their search around the neighborhood. A large area surrounding it had been scoured, yet there were still no signs of Ouyang En or Lei Father and Son. A month had passed, and Wang Chao felt a wave of helplessness wash over him. He decided that after one last week of searching, he would leave Yucheng for Jing City to look for Da Qiang.
But where could Ouyang En and Lei Father and Son have gone? Had they turned into Zombies, moving with the Zombie Horde to another location? Or had they evolved and mutated like Da Qiang, ending up in a different city? No one could say for sure. This was the first time Wang Chao had found companions to fight alongside him, and he was beginning to understand the true meaning of friendship. Naturally, he hoped that all his companions would survive so they could grow stronger together in this apocalyptic era where lives were as insignificant as grass, carving out a path that belonged to them.
Seeing Wang Chao's dejection, Wu Wan'er, though unsure of who he was looking for, understood that these individuals must be very important to him. She wondered if she held any significance in Wang Chao's heart. In truth, Wu Wan'er had joined Wang Chao not only to train herself but also to escape her impending marriage to Zhang Fusheng.
Previously, Wu Wan'er had believed she was destined to marry Zhang Fusheng. However, after being saved by Wang Chao, she began to doubt the arrangements her family had made for her. She no longer wanted to marry Zhang Fusheng.
Just before Wu Wan'er left, there had been a conversation between Elder Wu and Zhang Lao. Elder Wu said, "After planning for a lifetime, who would have thought it would all fall apart at the last moment?"
Zhang Lao replied, "When the heart is no longer in it, it naturally cannot be retained."
Only Wu Wan'er knew about these matters; she hadn’t told anyone. However, before leaving, she promised Elder Wu one request. Otherwise, with her status, how could the Wu Family and Zhang Family allow her to leave with Wang Chao? This condition was something she could never reveal to others; otherwise, she would surely be driven away by Wang Chao. After all, he was the one who saved her—her only savior in this world. She considered herself an important person to Wang Chao.
"Wang Chao brother, don’t be too sad. I believe you will find them," Wu Wan'er said gently.
Wang Chao nodded. To be honest, although he hadn’t encountered much danger in the past month, the restlessness and anxiety he felt were unprecedented. He realized that previously he had either been battling mutated monsters or engaging in a battle of wits against Zhuang Peng and his group. Even when facing those Zombie Chickens up close, each encounter had been extremely perilous; there hadn’t been time to think about anything else. But now that he relaxed, various thoughts flooded his mind.
There was only one week left; if they were still alive, they needed to show themselves soon.
Wang Chao shook his head and led everyone into a small supermarket. This supermarket could only be considered a modest one with two floors. If there hadn’t been nowhere else to go, Wang Chao wouldn’t have entered this place since it was quite far from the neighborhood. If Lei Father and Son or Ouyang En were alive, they would surely head toward the capital city. But what if they had truly become Zombies?
From outside the glass doors of the supermarket, he could see that Zombies were scattered throughout the interior. Although they weren’t densely packed together, there were certainly hundreds of them present. These ordinary Zombies wouldn’t pose much of a threat to them; moreover, during this long period of time, Yiyi and Wu Wan'er hadn’t personally killed any Zombies yet—it was time to train them a bit. Otherwise, if they were tested under dire circumstances later on, it would be too late for them to prepare mentally.
Wu Wan'er appeared somewhat hesitant, while Yiyi wielded the iron rod with ease. Having evolved to Brass Mid-Tier, her strength and speed far surpassed that of the Zombies. Wu Wan'er steeled herself; aside from a few stragglers that Wang Chao swiftly eliminated to protect the two of them, the remaining Zombies were dealt with by Yiyi and Wu Wan'er. The three of them, along with Little Wolf, pressed forward. Just as Yiyi swung her iron rod down, Wang Chao suddenly gripped it tightly with one hand.
Yiyi and Wu Wan'er were taken aback, looking at Wang Chao, who wore a stern expression, his brows furrowed in deep reluctance and conflict.
"Lei, Captain Lei!" Wang Chao uttered each word slowly.
Sure enough, the Zombie turned its head. Yiyi shouted out, "Uncle Lei!"
This Zombie was none other than Captain Lei, who had fought alongside Wang Chao before. The figure beside him was Captain Lei's father, Lei Commander. Wang Chao's hand trembled around the iron rod. He had often imagined how he would react if he saw Lei Father and Son or Ouyang En transformed into Zombies. He thought he would kill them without hesitation; after all, they were the kind of people who would rather die than become Zombies.
But now, in this moment, Wang Chao found it hard to act. The surrounding Zombies began to close in. Yiyi released her grip on the iron rod and continued to fight off the nearby Zombies with Little Wolf and Wan'er, while Wang Chao stood facing Lei Father and Son—no, the Lei Family Zombies.
"I never expected this... I never thought you would both become Zombies," Wang Chao murmured. "I always believed we could fight side by side until a new order was established... that we could always..."
But Lei Father and Son howled a few times and charged at him. Wang Chao did not dodge or evade; he allowed the two Zombies to bite at his body as he spoke slowly, "Since we can no longer fight together, let me carry on for you. We are all fine except for Ouyang En, whose fate is still unknown. The rest of the Bioterrorism Security Department members are doing well; I’m sure you would be pleased to see this scenario..."
As he spoke, the two Zombies lunged for Wang Chao's neck. He seized one Zombie by the throat with one hand and glanced at his bloodied arm. "Let this blood be my final gift to you. From now on, rest in peace; I will bury your bodies. May there be no Zombies and no death in another world."
With that, he twisted both hands, and Lei Father and Son fell silent but remained intact.
"Let's go!" Wang Chao said as he hoisted their bodies over his shoulders.
