Wang Chao actually wanted to bring the little fox back to the Safe Zone as well. However, although the little fox agreed to let Wang Chao pet it, it refused to follow him back. Wang Chao felt helpless; to be honest, if his strength hadn't been much greater than that of the fox, it might have already attacked him. Unlike Little Wolf, who had seen Wang Chao from the moment it opened its eyes and thus had a favorable impression of humans, the little fox was different. Unless provoked, it would not attack humans.
Little Wolf seemed to take it all in stride while Yiyi reluctantly said goodbye to the little fox. It wasn't until the fox disappeared into the distance that Little Wolf turned back. Wang Chao shrugged; they say that people in love lose their intelligence, and perhaps animals are no different. He mounted Little Wolf and headed back to the Safe Zone. As they passed a small slope, what unfolded before them took Wang Chao by surprise. Even Little Wolf slowed its pace, and together they quietly observed the scene below the hillside. What lay before them was beyond mere shock!
Wang Chao saw that at the bottom of the slope, countless corpses were sprawled out in disarray! When they had come earlier, Little Wolf had dashed past from another side, so Wang Chao hadn't seen what had happened down there. But now, as Little Wolf leaped up and ran along the slope, they were confronted with this horrifying sight. The reason for his shock was that the bodies in the valley were piled one on top of another, with the highest point nearly level with the slope! Severed limbs were scattered everywhere; a rough glance revealed there were at least ten thousand corpses!
"What... what happened here?" Wang Chao couldn't help but exclaim. "Could it be that the zombies all decided to commit collective suicide?"
After cautiously scanning the surroundings and finding no immediate danger, he urged Little Wolf to move down into the valley. However, as soon as Little Wolf took a step forward, it sank into the mud, startling Wang Chao. But Little Wolf was no ordinary creature; it quickly lifted its limbs and continued moving without getting stuck again. Looking down, Wang Chao realized that this mud wasn't formed from melting snow; it seemed more like it had been soaked with blood!
The mud sank under pressure from some liquid seeping out from beneath, its color resembling red earth. Yet there was no red earth in central Huaxia; this area belonged to a loess region. Wang Chao frowned as he deduced that this soil must have been saturated with blood from these corpses! The further down they went, the harder it became to navigate as more limbs appeared—arms, legs, and even several heads!
They finally reached a patch of harder ground where Wang Chao dismounted from Little Wolf. Standing parallel to those corpses intensified his shock; it truly felt endless. Suddenly, he thought of ancient generals who reveled in slaughter—did they often witness such scenes? As he stepped over bodies one by one to inspect them.
After examining several corpses, Wang Chao's brow furrowed deeper. He continued checking more bodies in succession before looking around in confusion. Little Wolf was busy rubbing its paws against a rock to shake off the mud stuck on them. Seeing Little Wolf's ease calmed Wang Chao's anxious heart; if he felt no danger and neither did Little Wolf, then this place should be safe—or at least temporarily safe!
Suddenly, an unsettling question resurfaced in his mind: Jing City had a population of three million people. Even if one or one-and-a-half million turned into zombies and another million died for other reasons, there should still be at least five hundred thousand survivors left. His Safe Zone only housed about ten thousand people—where had all those other survivors gone?
It seemed that once matters concerning the Safe Zone were settled, a thorough investigation would be necessary—at least a comprehensive search throughout Jing City because countless survivors must exist in unknown corners of this city. Whether these corpses belonged to zombies or humans remained unclear since all of them had been decapitated by someone or something unknown!
In this month spent in Jing City, aside from a few scattered thousands of zombies, the Safe Zone hadn't faced any substantial threats. Previously seen on television or in novels were scenes of hundreds of thousands of zombies surrounding cities; yet Wang Chao had never encountered such a situation. Suddenly, he recalled what he had witnessed in Yucheng when tens of thousands of zombies surged toward one direction only to appear overnight beneath where everyone temporarily resided!
At that time, he had entertained an idea—that these zombies possessed some intelligence—but subsequent events left him no time or energy to ponder this notion until now when it abruptly resurfaced in his mind. Something unusual must be at play; given that they were only two hours away from the Safe Zone at Little Wolf's speed.
If something really happens, the Safe Zone will be the first to bear the brunt!
Since the outbreak of the Zombie virus, a series of mysteries have been growing in Wang Chao's mind. First, the mysterious power that surged within him before he mutated now seems to be the result of the T Virus mutation. So, where did the T Virus in his body come from? Second, what do Little Grass and the forces behind it represent? Where is that mysterious place? Is this world merely a dream he is having? Third, do Zombies possess intelligence? Why does he keep pondering this question?
After seeing the Mass Grave, another question arose in Wang Chao's mind: What caused the presence of ten thousand corpses here? What could have led to each corpse being decapitated? Is there any danger in the nearby Safe Zone? One mystery after another tangled together like a ball of yarn in Wang Chao's head, giving him a terrible headache. These questions were truly beyond what he could comprehend.
If it weren't for this outing with Little Wolf, Wang Chao would never have discovered this issue. It was as if misfortune had struck at an already bad time; he had yet to resolve matters with Huangfu Yan when he stumbled upon this situation. He couldn't tell if it was a blessing or a curse. He could only hope that this was merely a collective suicide of Zombies. "Little Wolf, let's leave," Wang Chao said as he approached Little Wolf and patted him on the head.
