A person and a wolf were the best pass to enter. The guards at the gate were newly trained recruits, spirited and full of vigor. Upon seeing Wang Chao, they immediately rendered a standard military salute. In the past, Wang Chao would always return the gesture with a smile, but this time, he simply lacked the mood for it. His good spirits of the day had been completely ruined by the inexplicable appearance of the Mass Grave.
As he walked along, Wang Chao grew increasingly anxious. Without even considering how all those corpses came to be, just the sight of them—each head severed cleanly—was enough to unsettle him. The break points were almost as smooth as a mirror, as if some sharp blade had swiftly passed through. Wang Chao thought to himself that even at the Golden Level, it was impossible to deal with tens of thousands of Zombies simultaneously. Even if those Zombies had no real attacking power, their sheer numbers meant that nothing in this world could stand against such a massive horde! It was akin to a single ant being inconsequential, but if there were billions of ants, even an Elephant would have to retreat!
Because of this, if something existed that could face down over a hundred thousand Zombies without fear, what else in this world could possibly contend with it? The guards noticed Wang Chao's unease and felt apprehensive, wondering if something had happened again. The first thing Wang Chao did upon returning was to gather his team for an emergency meeting. Seeing his serious expression, everyone understood that something significant must have occurred; otherwise, the usually jovial Wang Chao would not be acting this way.
Clearing his throat and recalling what he had just witnessed, Wang Chao said, "What I am about to discuss is absolutely crucial to the survival of the Safe Zone. This matter is so bizarre that I couldn't even dream up how it happened." He then recounted everything that had transpired. The team was taken aback by his words. Before anyone could react further, Wang Chao reiterated his concerns regarding the numbers of humans and Zombies.
"I don't know how this relates to the decrease in human or Zombie populations," Wang Chao continued, "but if Jing City experiences a few more Mass Graves like this one, I fear there won't be many humans or Zombies left. Moreover, within this Mass Grave are both Zombies and humans; the severed heads are as smooth as mirrors. If this was done by humans, then their strength must be on par with Zhang Fusheng... which means they are at Diamond Level."
After he finished speaking, everyone’s expressions turned uneasy. If this was indeed human-made slaughter, it indicated indiscriminate killing; meaning that if they ever encountered this person, even with many people in the Safe Zone, they would not stand a chance against them—this was evident from the Mass Grave alone. However, if their opponent was not human, that realization sent chills down their spines. Humans' fear of unknown creatures far exceeds their fear of nuclear weapons, despite the latter's greater destructive power.
"Just when one crisis settles down, another arises," Wang Chao said with a bitter smile. "Huangfu Yan's subordinates haven't been dealt with yet and now we have this situation; this world is truly fraught with danger!" The atmosphere grew heavy among them; even Da Qiang, who usually laughed during meetings, could no longer muster a smile. Xiao Wei frowned and said, "We need to investigate this matter on-site. Shen Zhi Ying, can you take us on a helicopter search? If there really is something unknown..."
Shen Zhiying nodded and replied, "That's no problem; however, we don't have much aviation fuel left—just enough for about a week."
Xiao Wei scratched his head and said, "I think I should discuss this with Academician Sun to see if we can extract fuel from oil. But that's not something that can be done overnight..." As he spoke, Xiao Wei kept tugging at his hair and then spread his hands in exasperation. "We can only search around for three days at most; if we find nothing abnormal or do find something..."
"Forget it!" Xiao Wei declared. "Let's proceed as planned. I'll go along with Brother Wang and Da Qiang; the rest of you need to continue managing the Safe Zone."
Yang Mengying and others had no objections; only Yiyi shouted out: "If Xiao Wei can go, why can't I?"
Xiao Wei replied firmly: "This kind of thing should be handled by men; after all, you are the women we need to protect!" His words left everyone exchanging glances while Wang Chao felt his teeth ache from disbelief at where this kid learned such things. "It's settled then!" Xiao Wei stated decisively. Wang Chao nodded in agreement; thus, their plans were set in motion.
"Let's get to it. This matter concerns the safety of the entire Safe Zone. Compared to the ambush by Huangfu Yan's subordinates, this is far more important!" As the plane took off, it sparked speculation among the residents. If not for the many who remained behind, everyone would have thought Wang Chao was abandoning the Safe Zone. The helicopter hovered low, allowing Wang Chao to see the magnificent yet eerie sight of the Mass Grave from above.
The entire valley was filled with corpses; it looked even more overwhelming than when Wang Chao had seen it from the hillside. Those witnessing this scene turned pale, especially Xiao Wei, who began to vomit in the aircraft. However, this also revealed a childlike side of her; if Xiao Wei could remain calm in such a situation, that would indeed be terrifying.
"Sister Shen Zhiying, can you tell how many bodies are down there?" After a while, Xiao Wei finally regained her composure and asked Shen Zhiying. At that moment, Shen Zhiying's face was ashen. Wang Chao noticed her hands gripping the controls were slightly trembling. It was understandable; anyone seeing so many bodies piled up like goods would struggle to remain composed.
Even those accustomed to life and death were once ordinary people…
"Roughly estimated, there are at least one hundred fifty thousand bodies here, if not more than two hundred thousand!" Shen Zhiying's voice was soft, but it struck the others like iron—heavy and oppressive.
"What in the world happened here…" Da Qiang's eyes were fixed on the corpses outside the cabin, his stuttering words betraying his mental state. Only Tang Feng and Wang Chao seemed somewhat normal. Wang Chao said, "Did you see? So many bodies... I can't fathom what could kill this many zombies and then transport their bodies here..."
"No wonder there are so few zombies near the Safe Zone; they must have all died here!" Da Qiang added, echoing Wang Chao's thoughts.
