"Previously, I was the one who took action, but the person we intend to attack is not you," Li Mao said. Wang Chao looked at Li Mao with a puzzled expression, unsure of what he meant. At that moment, Li Mao appeared troubled and did not directly answer Wang Chao's question. Instead, he took a few steps back and said, "Follow us. Once you see the scene ahead, you'll understand."
Tang Feng glanced at Wang Chao with concern, but Wang Chao shook his head slightly. Regardless of whether Li Mao harbored hostility towards them, their strength was not something ordinary people could contend with. He gestured for Tang Feng to relax and followed Li Mao into the cave. The others stayed far behind the two, clearly wary of them.
Wang Chao shook his head; it seemed that dispelling those people's prejudices against him would not be an easy task. As he walked, he observed the narrow passage that could barely accommodate two people side by side. It appeared to have once been a sewer that had been abandoned later, as debris and garbage had been cleared away. After walking a short distance, they arrived at the first depression in the sewer, surrounded by wooden boards that formed a makeshift room.
"I hope the scene inside doesn't frighten you..." Li Mao said as he opened the door to the wooden structure. Wang Chao and Tang Feng followed closely behind. The moment the wooden door swung open, a putrid stench wafted out from within. This was a smell Wang Chao had never encountered in his first half of life, yet in just a few months, he had become all too familiar with it—it was the odor of decaying flesh. Despite having smelled it countless times before, he instinctively covered his nose with his fingers as soon as the door opened.
"What happened to this corpse?" Wang Chao asked. "The air down here is already stagnant; why leave a body behind?"
"Take a closer look," Li Mao replied.
As he spoke, Li Mao stepped aside to reveal the sight before them. A woman's corpse lay exposed in front of them. Wang Chao focused on it and saw that this naked female body had both arms reduced to bones, and her chest had become two hollow cavities. After a brief glance, Wang Chao understood why Li Mao had said what he did earlier.
He turned to look at Tang Feng and saw the same realization reflected in his eyes. Sighing deeply, Wang Chao remarked, "This corpse has had its flesh removed; it seems she was used for something." At this point, he suddenly recalled a bag of flesh and bones they had discarded earlier—if he was correct, it belonged to this very corpse...
"Exactly!" Li Mao exclaimed. "This woman was raped and murdered; even in death, she found no peace! Her flesh has been consumed by that vile man! The person we wanted to attack is him; he's now out looking for new survivors. We came here full of joy but never imagined that he would treat us merely as livestock..."
"What kind of person?" Wang Chao asked.
"He's someone from the lower tiers of Silver," Li Mao explained. "His strength is formidable; none of us here can match him! But if it's you two, you could avenge her and those who have died." As he spoke, Li Mao's tone grew more intense and furious. When mentioning revenge, he slammed his fist against the wooden door; splinters pierced his hand, instantly staining it red with blood. Yet he showed no reaction and continued speaking: "Do you know? This woman was that man's girlfriend!"
As he spoke, Li Mao pointed to a figure in the distance. Wang Chao turned to see that person already in tears, trembling all over but making no sound. Wang Chao asked, "If we can't defeat him, why not escape?"
"Run?" Li Mao laughed heartily, then continued to walk forward. Suddenly, he flung open a door. Wang Chao looked in and was shocked to see five naked women crammed into the narrow space. Each of them appeared emaciated, chained together with iron links. With their strength, it would take considerable effort and tools to saw through those chains.
As the door swung open, the women burst into tears, as if they had seen the most terrifying thing in the world. "It's me, don't be afraid, it's me," Li Mao hurriedly said. Gradually, their cries subsided, though they continued to sob. Wang Chao gently closed the door behind them. Gritting his teeth, Li Mao said, "There are two more rooms like this! We can leave easily, but what about them? Even if we lack the power to rescue them, just being here might warm their hearts a little. I hate it—I hate my own weakness and that I can't kill that man!"
Hearing this, Wang Chao was filled with rage. To treat people like livestock, to indulge in their suffering and resort to cannibalism when food ran out—he could hardly believe such atrocities were committed by fellow humans! It was truly unforgivable.
"I haven't been in this underground shelter for long—just a week—but I can no longer tolerate these brutal acts," Li Mao continued. "I wanted to take the chance when he went out to kill him, but then I encountered you all." At this point, Li Mao suddenly knelt on the ground and said, "If you can save them from their suffering, if you can kill that man, I would willingly face any danger without hesitation!"
Wang Chao quickly helped Li Mao up. This man had loyalty and righteousness; it was rare to find someone who wouldn't abandon their principles in such chaotic times. Tang Feng also patted Li Mao on the shoulder. Wang Chao understood that this gesture meant Tang Feng had accepted Li Mao as part of their squad. "Even without your request, we would never let such a person go. If you trust me, leave this matter to us."
Li Mao looked into Wang Chao's eyes for a moment before saying, "Alright, I trust you!"
"Tell Shen Zhiying to fly the plane far away and come back here to pick us up in two hours. Oh, and remind her to bring some clothes!" Wang Chao whispered to Tang Feng. Tang Feng nodded and replied, "I'll take care of it right away."
"Good." Wang Chao turned back to Li Mao and asked, "When do you think she'll return?"
