"Hand over those women to Wu Wan'er and let her arrange for their accommodation," Wang Chao continued to inquire about the Armory at Li Mao's place. To his surprise, Tang Feng followed along, which made Wang Chao chuckle inwardly; it seemed Tang Feng was eager to join as well. He hurriedly pulled Li Mao to sit down and asked, "Where is your Armory located? Is it far from here?"
Li Mao shook his head and replied, "It's not too far, but it's also not very close. It depends on how we get there. If we take a helicopter, it would only take a few hours. But if we drive, it would probably take half a day..." Wang Chao and Tang Feng exchanged glances before Wang Chao said, "In that case, we'll drive. However, there will definitely be traffic jams on the way, so half a day might not be enough. Two days for the round trip should suffice..."
Tang Feng nodded. The weapons were important, but even more crucial was the helicopter.
Li Mao's eyes darted around as he said, "Alright then, are we three going on this mission?" Wang Chao nodded and replied, "That's right. Let me give some instructions first, and then we'll set off. Tang Feng, you stay here and gather more information while I’m gone!" Tang Feng nodded in agreement. Wang Chao thought they would be away for at least two days. Since Huangfu Yan's targets were himself and his companions, they should be safe. However, this was no small matter; it was better to discuss it with Xiao Wei.
Xiao Wei readily agreed but had one request: she wanted to see what kind of person Li Mao was that allowed him to level up so quickly. Li Mao was puzzled about why Wang Chao had brought a child along. Just as Wang Chao was about to introduce her, Xiao Wei spoke in a childlike tone, "I heard from Brother Wang Chao that you have great potential! I wanted to see if you know ancient martial arts. I really want to learn! Can you teach me when you come back?"
Wang Chao thought that she might be some relative's child. He smiled and ruffled Xiao Wei's hair before saying, "Sure! When I return, I'll teach you martial arts. But you mustn't be afraid of hard work!"
"Of course! I'm a real man!" Xiao Wei declared. "Then I won't disturb you any longer. I'm off now! Goodbye, Brother Wang Chao!" With that, she skipped away.
Li Mao asked, "Brother Wang, is that your relative's child? She's already at Brass Mid-Tier level; she's quite adorable." Wang Chao casually replied, "Yes, yes!"
Wang Chao felt a bit awkward as he watched Xiao Wei's retreating figure. He wondered what she was up to this time. To Li Mao, Xiao Wei's words and actions seemed like those of an ordinary ten-year-old child. However, both Wang Chao and Tang Feng knew Xiao Wei's true nature and found it hard to accept her childish behavior. In their eyes, as an important member of the team, she should speak with maturity and composure; they had forgotten that Xiao Wei was just a ten-year-old child.
Neither of them expressed their confusion further; they trusted Xiao Wei completely but were unsure of her motives behind such actions. However, given that Wang Chao and Tang Feng were not particularly perceptive individuals, they couldn't guess what was going on. Setting aside this matter for now, Wang Chao turned back and said, "I've given all the necessary instructions; we can set off immediately."
"Considering the road conditions, an off-road vehicle is essential. There should be many zombies in the city center, so we need to take the outskirts instead; although it may take longer," he explained as the three of them climbed into the off-road vehicle. Wang Chao added, "We have three days' worth of food and drinking water in the back along with a spare barrel of gasoline—enough for our return."
Tang Feng and Li Mao nodded in agreement. Tang Feng took the wheel while Li Mao sat in the passenger seat directing him; Wang Chao settled into the back seat. The vehicle started up and drove out of the Safe Zone. There’s no need to elaborate on the journey; they avoided zombies by taking detours until half a day passed quickly.
Suddenly, Tang Feng slammed on the brakes, jolting Wang Chao awake from his light doze in the back seat. One hand braced against the seat while his other instinctively assumed an attack posture.
"What’s going on?" Wang Chao whispered lowly.
"Look ahead!" Li Mao's voice came through.
Wang Chao looked up and peered through the glass, seeing nothing ahead. Instead, a number of Zombies were trailing behind them. "There's nothing up front, keep driving! If we get surrounded by Zombies, it won't be easy to get out!" However, Tang Feng showed no intention of driving and said, "Look down!" Wang Chao leaned forward slightly and then lowered his head to look.
He saw a wide strip of green Mucus on the road ahead, looking utterly disgusting. It stretched across the middle of the path and extended into the distance, resembling a road made of Mucus, at least three meters wide. Could it be the trace left by a caterpillar the size of a truck? Wang Chao glanced to either side but saw no sign of the imagined caterpillar. The Mucus had no visible ends, and its length was uncertain.
"Get out and take a look!" Wang Chao said. "Tang Feng, you stay in the car and be ready to drive at any moment. Li Mao and I will go."
Tang Feng pressed the clutch and gripped the handbrake, poised to take off at any second. It wasn't that Wang Chao was overly cautious or that Tang Feng was too careful; it was just that this inexplicable Mucus was truly chilling. This world was really turning into one filled with monsters—Zombie Dogs, Zombie Chickens, lions, and upgraded creatures that were unrecognizable from their original forms, like the Six-Petal Mouth monster or Commander Yu who emerged from within itself, not to mention the one-eyed beast's Beastification skill.
It felt like his own mutation skills.
Was this truly a path of evolution or merely a gradual descent into monstrosity? The higher his level became, the more Wang Chao could sense subtle changes within his body. Whether these changes were good or bad remained unknown to him. As he pondered this, they approached the Mucus. The closer they got, the more polluted the air became, with an increasingly pungent odor. Wang Chao noticed some corpses on top of it—animals as well as humans—seemingly having stumbled onto this Mucus by accident.
Li Mao wanted to move closer for a better look, but Wang Chao grabbed him and said, "Wait! Did you see those corpses? This Mucus has high corrosiveness and stickiness. If it gets on your skin and you don't cut away both flesh and Mucus together, it'll be hard to remove. We don't even know what kind of monster left this behind, but judging by its appearance, that monster should be long gone."
