Hearing Li Mao's words, Wang Chao and Tang Feng exchanged glances. As soon as they entered the room, they noticed the Ancient Blade, which looked incredibly eerie, especially the pair of dragon eyes that seemed to capture one's soul. According to the Daoist in the story, just a glance at those dragon eyes could cause a person with a weak fate to drop dead. Although this blade was over three thousand years old, Wang Chao felt that the lingering resentment within it had yet to dissipate.
"This blade is so sinister; I think we should just forget about it," Tang Feng suggested. "There are other blades here that are quite good. Why be fixated on this one?"
Wang Chao shook his head and replied, "It's precisely because it's so sinister that I want to give it a try! Compared to this blade, the others simply pale in comparison." Tang Feng realized that Wang Chao was genuinely interested in this blade. He understood this feeling well; it was like when he first laid eyes on Tang Dao and couldn't move away from it. After a moment's thought, Tang Feng said, "In that case, you go ahead and try it. If anything goes wrong, I'll step in with Li Mao to break the spell. Don't worry; I'll act immediately."
Looking at the Dragon Demon Blade hanging on the wall, Wang Chao nodded. He trusted Tang Feng's abilities; even if he did something reckless, Tang Feng would likely save him in time. Slowly, Wang Chao approached the Dragon Demon Blade and reached out to touch it. As his arm drew near, a chilling sensation crept from his fingertips, causing him to hesitate.
Wang Chao furrowed his brow but continued to reach out. When his fingers finally made contact with the Demon Blade, he felt an excruciating headache. Yet he didn't pull back; instead, he grasped the blade firmly. The Dragon Demon Blade had no sheath, and despite its age, its luster remained undiminished as he yanked it off the wall.
In an instant, Wang Chao half-knelt down. Although nothing bizarre like decapitating himself occurred, both of them could see beads of sweat forming on Wang Chao's forehead as he trembled all over, as if engaged in a fierce duel with an unseen opponent. With the Demon Blade in hand, his mind became chaotic; all he could think about was killing—killing everyone in sight and chopping down everything he saw!
Wang Chao had experienced this feeling before during his first mutation when he went on a rampage in Yucheng. In that battle, he had killed many innocent people, including Huangfu Yan's son. He knew that if he couldn't control this desire, he might lose control again. His hands gripped the blade tightly, the sharp edge already cutting into his palms.
"Are you okay?" Tang Feng asked anxiously upon seeing Wang Chao's condition.
Wang Chao gritted his teeth and replied, "I'm fine." Although he said he was fine, he felt more exhausted than when he fought Commander Yu. The Demon Blade was indeed formidable with its gathering of four hundred thousand resentful souls; Wang Chao could even feel the deep-seated grievances within it—old men, children, women, and warriors—all seemed to speak within his mind, causing an unbearable headache that felt like it could explode at any moment.
"You should let go if it's too much," Tang Feng urged as he noticed Wang Chao nearing his limits. Wang Chao couldn't even speak but shook his head to signal Tang Feng not to worry. However, they both saw Wang Chao's grip on the Demon Blade tightening as he slowly shifted to hold it by the hilt backward; inch by inch, it rose as if ready to swiftly sever his own head.
Though slow-moving, if this continued even at such a pace, the sharp blade would eventually slice through Wang Chao's neck. Tang Feng drew Tang Dao from his back and prepared to strike down the Demon Blade from Wang Chao's hands. But Wang Chao growled lowly, "Don't move!" Tang Feng clenched his fists but remained silent as his actions froze.
With one person's strength against hundreds of thousands of resentful souls' power, Wang Chao finally understood that all those legends in this world were indeed true! He watched helplessly as the Demon Blade slid toward his neck when suddenly he felt an increase in strength coursing through his hands; veins bulged as he trembled uncontrollably—he seemed unable to suppress the Demon Blade any longer.
Suddenly, Wang Chao felt an overwhelming surge of resentment rising to the heavens. He could no longer control the Demon Blade, which shot swiftly toward his neck. Without a second thought, he activated the Breathing Technique in an attempt to suppress the Dragon Demon Blade. Tang Feng recognized the urgency of the situation; without time to think, he drew his Tang Dao, aiming to block the Dragon Demon Blade. However, the speed of the Dragon Demon Blade was simply too fast. Although Tang Feng reacted quickly, he was still a moment too late and failed to intercept the Dragon Demon Blade!
"Wang Chao!" Tang Feng managed to shout just that one phrase.
In Li Mao's eyes, a strange glimmer flashed, but the other two did not notice it. Even if Li Mao wanted to intervene, his level was only at Brass Mid-Tier, which was utterly insufficient. Yet at that moment, Li Mao struck out with two fingers and managed to press against the back of the Dragon Demon Blade. Still, it was of no use; he was sent flying, unsure if his fingers would even be saved.
However, Li Mao bought Wang Chao a crucial second. With the Breathing Technique activated, Wang Chao let out a roar and swung his arms with all his might, his veins bulging as a mouthful of fresh blood spewed forth! It splattered onto the hilt of the blade, and as it hit the dragon eye on the hilt, it vanished as if absorbed by it. The black-red Dragon Demon Blade seemed to darken even further.
At that moment, Wang Chao could no longer hold on; it felt as if all his strength had been drained. His hands loosened, and the Dragon Demon Blade fell straight to the ground while Wang Chao collapsed backward. Time passed—how long he couldn't tell—before he rubbed his head and sat up, looking around to find himself in a moving car. "What’s going on?" Wang Chao asked.
"You fainted and then immediately stood up again, gripping the Dragon Demon Blade as if your eyes were glowing red. But you showed no signs of wanting to harm yourself anymore. Then you swung and brought down a wall for us to escape. Once we got in the car, you fainted again," someone explained.
Wang Chao rubbed his head again and said, "Is that really what happened? I had no idea."
As he spoke, he noticed the Dragon Demon Blade lying beside him and instinctively grabbed it without a second thought.
