Wang Chao didn't even look back; he swung his knife in a swift motion, blood spraying out and staining his back. "Close the Door!" he shouted as he was just five meters away from the small door on the side. The guard didn’t hesitate and quickly pulled the iron door shut. As Wang Chao slipped inside, the door slammed shut behind him. He turned around and braced himself against the iron door just as he heard a series of loud bangs—the Zombie Dog had crashed into it!
Just as Wang Chao secured the latch and locked it tight, an explosion echoed through the air, deafeningly loud. It felt as if all sounds faded away, leaving only the sound of the blast. Wang Chao climbed onto a movable platform that Commander Yu had set up for shooting during a Zombie Tide, allowing people to fire from above to minimize unnecessary casualties. The Electric Fence had been powered down, and everyone was shooting through the firing holes at the fence.
From his vantage point on the wall, Wang Chao could see the devastation caused by the minefield. Smoke filled the air, and dismembered limbs occasionally fell from above. Blood rained down from the sky—blood that had been blasted into the air from the Zombies. The dark red liquid looked eerily strange against the backdrop of smoke; visibility was low, but they continued to shoot. With such overwhelming numbers, even a blind person could hit those Zombies.
At that moment, Liu Jie was firing a machine gun. Wang Chao asked, "Where's Little Wolf?" Liu Jie paused, but a nearby soldier replied, "I saw Little Wolf jump over the wall to the west. I don’t know where he went!" Wang Chao's heart sank. At such a critical moment, how could Little Wolf have run away? What was going on? Was it because of that fox?
But time was pressing, and Wang Chao couldn't dwell on it any longer. The explosions finally ceased, and dust began to settle. Although it wasn't a complete haze, he could now see what lay ahead: dozens of half-meter-deep craters had been blasted into the road, showcasing the power of the mines! Besides those Zombies that had been obliterated in an explosion, countless others lay sprawled in the craters, trying to get up but failing miserably.
The Zombies behind didn’t care whether those in front managed to rise; they trampled over those who couldn’t get up, crushing them into pulp and filling the craters with gore. The Zombie Dogs that had already surged forward kept slamming against the door, causing it to shake with oppressive metallic sounds that made everyone's nerves tense.
"Squad One, shoot down at the Zombie Dogs! Everyone else, keep attacking the main horde! We must not let them get close!" Liu Jie shouted hoarsely.
"Understood!" everyone responded.
Bullets poured out like rain, striking the Zombies and creating countless bursts of flesh and blood. They didn’t even need to aim; as long as they knocked them down, those behind would take care of them. However, even if those Zombies stood still, it would take days for their two hundred-strong team to eliminate tens of thousands of Zombies in this Zombie Squad—not to mention their current situation.
Suddenly, Wang Chao noticed a Zombie at a distance of about a kilometer opening its mouth wide. The surrounding Zombies instinctively formed a small circle around it; contrary to what everyone expected—that subsequent Zombies would push forward and crush it—more Zombies began to open their mouths as well, each creating its own vacuum space around them.
Wang Chao felt a sense of foreboding wash over him. Without thinking twice, he shouted, "Concentrate fire on those Zombies with their mouths open!" It was clear to anyone that something unusual was happening; these strangely halted Zombies with their mouths agape were definitely preparing for something big. Instantly, all firepower focused on them. Liu Jie proved himself worthy of being called King of Soldiers; with just a few bursts from his machine gun, he managed to blow apart one Big-Mouth Zombie.
In an instant, that Big-Mouth Zombie exploded, releasing a mass of green mucus—not like what Wang Chao and Tang Feng had seen on the road before; this mucus was much lighter in color. After bursting forth, it splattered onto other Zombies nearby with a ripping sound reminiscent of hot iron meeting water; immediately, large chunks of flesh were corroded away from those Zombies' bodies.
Although the group quickly took down dozens of them, there were still countless Big-Mouth Zombies standing in place. Suddenly, those Mucus projectiles shot out, seemingly ejected directly from their stomachs, traveling a great distance like artillery among the Zombies. Wang Chao shouted, "Get down and cover your heads with your clothes!" Despite Wang Chao's timely warning, the Mucus came at high speed. Some slower warriors were directly hit by the Mucus, instantly corroding a large chunk of flesh and skin.
Screams erupted as the surrounding warriors hurriedly used their clothes to wipe it off. Fortunately, this Mucus was not like the one Wang Chao had seen on the streets; it wasn't very sticky and dissolved easily upon contact. "Concentrate fire! Shoot down those Zombies that are spraying Mucus!" Wang Chao and Liu Jie shouted almost simultaneously. This type of Zombie posed a significant threat!
Moreover, Wang Chao was unaware of how frequently these Zombies sprayed Mucus. If the intervals were short, then none of the people here would survive! Although they had firepower to suppress them, the massive horde continued to move slowly yet steadily toward the Safe Zone. The Big-Mouth Zombies kept spraying Mucus, while the rapidly approaching Zombie Dogs relentlessly slammed against the iron gate.
Injuries occurred from time to time, but none of the warriors retreated. They understood that they were the last line of defense for this Safe Zone. If they fell back, the Safe Zone would be completely lost! At that moment, Shen Zhitao and Wu Wan'er arrived with a group of women and children. Wang Chao thought to himself, aren't they just adding to the chaos?
Frustration surged within him, and disregarding decorum, Wang Chao exclaimed, "What the hell are you doing here? Didn't we tell you to retreat to the back mountain? Don't cause trouble here! Leave immediately!"
However, this time, the usually gentle Wu Wan'er retorted without backing down, "Who says we are a burden! We are also part of the Safe Zone and have a responsibility to contribute! We came here to help treat the wounded!"
