The iron mesh fell with the body, forming an obstacle at the entrance of the Safe Zone, entangling the approaching Zombie Dogs. The force and speed of the Mucus Zombies were significantly reduced, and everyone breathed a temporary sigh of relief. However, at that moment, their gazes turned to the wall, where they discovered that green Mucus had corroded small holes into it. Although they were not deep, they were densely packed, creating an unsettling sight.
"This is bad; we can't let them get close to the iron door. The door is pitifully thin compared to the wall! If it gets corroded through, the Zombies behind could easily break it down!" At this moment, Shen Zhitao rushed over and quickly reached Wang Chao's side. The sounds of gunfire and impacts were intense; even though they were close, their voices sounded as faint as mosquitoes. Wang Chao shouted, "Have all the residents been settled? What about the others? Didn't I tell you to keep an eye on Li Mao?"
Shen Zhitao had already chambered a round in her gun and replied, "The situation is urgent; we can't afford to worry about that now. Yang Mengying is overseeing the evacuation, and Xiao Wei and Yiyi are with her. Li Mao is at the side door with my sister and Tang Feng Da Qiang watching over him; there shouldn't be any problems. The side door is narrower and harder to pass through than the front door, making it less accessible for Zombies. This place is the most dangerous!"
As she spoke, Shen Zhitao looked up at the distant Zombie Tide and said, "As long as we hold the front door, everything else should be safe!"
Hearing this, Wang Chao nodded and fired off a magazine before reloading. "Quickly! You and Wan'er take those women downstairs to find some heavy objects to block the iron door. It's our weakest point; once it's breached, it won't be long before we're overwhelmed!" Shen Zhitao nodded vigorously without saying much more and jumped down, calling out to Wu Wan'er and the others, "Follow me! Hurry!"
Meanwhile, outside, the Zombies had been repelled wave after wave by the mounted Zombies. The attacks from the Zombie horde had noticeably eased, allowing everyone to relax slightly. However, Wang Chao dared not let his guard down for a moment. The iron door had already been corroded with various small holes; it was known that a thousand-mile dike could be destroyed by an ant hole. A solid iron plate was hard to break through, but with holes in it and given the current number of Zombies, it could easily be breached!
"At this rate, how long can our ammunition last?" Wang Chao leaned closer to Liu Jie and asked.
"Two days!" Liu Jie replied. "However, right now, the Weapon Factory is still working overtime to produce ammunition. Otherwise, do you think where all the other men in the Safe Zone have gone? But considering this number of Zombies attacking day and night, our bullets will clearly run out quickly. I don't know how much ammunition we can produce in a day with our current technology!"
"Two days," Wang Chao murmured to himself. Previously, Commander Yu of the Safe Zone was suspicious by nature and placed great importance on his own safety. Not only did he build this towering iron gate over ten meters high but he also enslaved the residents of the Safe Zone to work overtime producing countless bullets. After months of production, they could only last two days against this horde of hundreds of thousands of Zombies.
Was he really going to lose control of Jing City Safe Zone just one month after taking over? And now that they had just freed themselves from Commander Yu's tyranny and could finally live according to their own wishes in the Safe Zone—were they really going to be destroyed by these Zombies? Wang Chao was unwilling to accept this fate; everyone present felt the same way. How could they let these Zombies take away what they had fought so hard for?
"Kill them! Wipe them out!" shouted a very young warrior as he fired wildly; the flames spewing from his gun seemed to reflect his current emotions.
"Look! Those Zombies seem to be retreating!" a voice suddenly exclaimed. "That's right; it looks like they're pulling back! Are they actually retreating?" Others began shouting as well, "We pushed them back! We pushed them back!" In an instant, joyous cheers filled the air as gunfire gradually subsided, and everyone watched in awe as the Zombies fell back.
Had they really retreated? Wang Chao could hardly believe his eyes, yet the reality was undeniable. He watched as the Zombies in front slowly turned around and began to walk away, while the Zombie Dogs also ceased their charge and turned back, moving at a slow pace. Like a tide, the mass of Zombies was retreating.
It was nearing evening, with the sun setting in the west. Many people had slumped to the ground, leaning against walls, murmuring to themselves. Wang Chao glanced at the Guards; they were trembling all over, especially their fingers that had just released the triggers. Their index fingers still twitched as if they were maintaining the act of pulling the trigger.
The guns leaned against the wall were so hot that they made a hissing sound against it, indicating just how heated they had become.
Suddenly, a delicious aroma wafted from a distance. Those watching the Zombies retreat, those dozing against the wall, and those still beating down on fallen foes all turned their heads. They saw cars approaching, and the source of the enticing smell came from these vehicles. The first person to step out of a car was none other than Yang Mengying.
Then more people emerged from the cars, each holding bowls of steaming rice—no side dishes, just rice and drinking water. Yet even this simple meal seemed incredibly sweet to everyone; many were already swallowing hard in anticipation. Wang Chao took another look at the retreating Zombies and shouted, "All squad members, eat according to your teams—twenty per group! Move quickly!"
The order was given, but no one moved. Instead, they silently shouldered their weapons. Wang Chao was baffled; he looked at everyone in confusion. Just then, Liu Jie called out, "Commander, please eat first!" Wang Chao waved his hand dismissively and replied, "Don't mind me; I'm not hungry. I'm watching the movements of the Zombies in the distance. Follow my orders—no dawdling! Move!"
Yet still, no one stirred.
Just as Wang Chao was about to lose his temper, he heard everyone calling out in unison, "Please let the commander eat first..."
"That's not right!" Suddenly, as everyone thought they were safe, a soldier shouted: "They're not retreating; it seems like they're strategizing!"
"What?"
