As the Black Monsters surged in, those still on the platform witnessed the Zombie horde that had retreated to the high-rise buildings charging out once more. This time, no one could stop their advance. The Safe Zone was in chaos; many women who were still retreating were pounced upon by the Black Monsters, their sharp teeth and claws glistening ominously. Soon, those women were disemboweled, their blood and flesh staining the ground.
With the increasing number of Black Monsters, the mere two hundred people present were unable to hold them back. Cries of despair filled the air. Wang Chao, at Silver Upper Tier level, found himself overwhelmed by the relentless onslaught of Black Monsters. "Stop them! We can't let them through; protect those women as they retreat!" he shouted to the fighting crowd. But with only two hundred people, there were no extra forces to spare.
Gritting his teeth, Wang Chao dashed towards a Black Monster's back, aiming for the retreating women.
At that moment, Shen Zhitao was protecting everyone as they fell back. These women had no combat capability and faced the Black Monsters like lambs to the slaughter. How could one person like Shen Zhitao stand against an endless tide of Black Monsters? "Be careful!" Wang Chao called out as he saw Shen Zhitao side-kick one Black Monster away while another lunged at her. She struggled to turn in time and was about to be tackled by the creature.
In a flash of thought, Wang Chao summoned a dagger from his Spatial Ring into his hand. With a swift motion, he hurled it forward; it flew through the air like a shooting star and pierced into the body of the Black Monster, buying Shen Zhitao a moment of precious time. Although his dagger struck true, the monster's momentum carried its claws forward.
But Shen Zhitao managed to pull back just in time; she slightly crouched as the monster's claws swept over her head without causing any real harm. However, her hair was disheveled, dark strands cascading down her fragrant shoulders. The hairpin that had held her hair up was lost somewhere in the chaos. If not for Wang Chao's timely throw, it would have been more than just a hairpin that flew away.
Having narrowly dodged a fatal blow, Shen Zhitao stepped forward and grasped the dagger still embedded in the Black Monster's body. With a powerful slash, she killed it completely. At that moment, Wang Chao reached her side and grabbed her arm. "Are you okay?" he asked. Shen Zhitao nodded but instinctively reached for her hair only to remember that her hairpin was gone.
"Go! Leave this to me! Remember, don’t come back! Protect Yang Mengying..." Wang Chao said quickly and quietly. Others couldn’t hear him, but Shen Zhitao understood every word clearly. Upon hearing his first statement, she realized that with the breach of the Safe Zone, everyone was in danger; no one here was safe. His words were both a charge and a farewell.
Shen Zhitao didn’t want to leave and wasn’t afraid of danger; otherwise, she wouldn’t have followed Wang Chao out during their time in the capital. Just as she opened her mouth to argue that she would help him after escorting these women to safety, she heard his last words and fell silent. Perhaps in Wang Chao’s eyes, Yang Mengying was indeed the most important woman to him. She glanced at Yang Mengying retreating with a group of women and nodded.
Turning around without hesitation—if this was his final message to her, she would fulfill it...
"Peach!" Wang Chao suddenly called out to Shen Zhitao.
"What is it?" As she turned around, she used Wang Chao's dagger to dispatch another Black Monster effortlessly, her hair flowing gracefully in the air. "You look beautiful with your hair down," Wang Chao said unexpectedly. Shen Zhitao smiled lightly as she continued running back with the group. What Wang Chao didn’t see was that in that fleeting moment when she looked back, tears streamed down Shen Zhitao’s face.
"Gather around here, don't scatter!" Wang Chao shouted to the crowd.
At that moment, more people joined the battlefield, rushing in from the side doors—additional Guards and workers from the Safe Zone. Although their firearms were limited, they had plenty of knives and daggers. The waning moon hung like snow in the chilly spring breeze, and the land of the Safe Zone was completely shrouded in fear. "Brother Wang!" It was none other than Da Qiang, who had just arrived to help.
"I'm here too!" Tang Feng chimed in.
"What’s the situation on the other sides?" Wang Chao asked.
Da Qiang rushed into the fray while replying, "That area hasn't fallen yet, but it won't hold for long!" Tang Feng added, "That's right, it's the same on my side!" Hearing this, Wang Chao realized that there was no way to preserve this Safe Zone. With more people flooding into the battlefield, the Black Monsters' advance was halted at the open ground before the gates!
"With this killing intent, let’s wipe them all out here!"
"Kill them!"
Just then, a sudden loud bang echoed from the iron gate, startling everyone—including the black monsters, who turned to look. Then came a second sound, followed by a third; each one grew louder and more frequent, as if someone were hammering against a wall with a massive iron mallet.
Debris fell from where the iron gate connected; large stones tumbled down, crashing into the ground and creating numerous craters.
"Fall back! Quickly fall back!" Wang Chao shouted. He could see that the connection point of the iron gate was on the verge of collapse. The gate stood ten meters high and weighed a thousand pounds; if it fell, it could crush countless people! But Wang Chao's warning came too late. With one final heavy strike, the connection point could no longer support the weight of the iron gate.
The gate crashed down with a thunderous roar. Many people and Black Monsters only reacted at that moment; even those who did manage to respond couldn’t escape from beneath the collapsing gate. In an instant, it was impossible to know how many lives—human and monster alike—were lost as flesh was crushed and blood sprayed out from under the door! At that moment, everyone saw several enormous Zombies emerge outside!
Behind those massive Zombies followed an overwhelming horde of countless Zombie Squads. After pushing down the iron gate, these gigantic Zombies didn’t rush inside but instead spread out to either side, relentlessly pounding against the walls with booming sounds. The area around the gate was too crowded for Zombies to swarm in; these larger Zombies were expanding their space so that all of them could surge forward!
"Fall back, fall back!"
