"Hey, hey." The familiar voice rang in his ears as he woke up. Wang Chao rubbed his head groggily and looked around with sleepy eyes. He felt something soft beside him, quite comfortable. Slowly opening his eyes, he realized he was lying on a large bed, with familiar patterns and designs. Rubbing his eyes, Wang Chao asked, "Is it this early?"
Wang Chao nodded, thoughtfully gazing at Yang Mengying. Today was just like any of the ordinary days over the past six months, a typical day. The winter sunlight was glaringly bright. Yang Mengying said, "I have to go to work now. You should find a job soon. By the way, Yiyi's mother came by earlier, but you were still asleep. The stuff outside is what she brought. I can't talk anymore; I'm really going to be late for work. I have to go."
Before Wang Chao could respond, Yang Mengying rushed out the door. Still dazed, Wang Chao got up and quickly washed up. Looking in the mirror at himself in his twenties, he realized he still hadn't found a job and had been lounging at home, barely getting by writing articles. The muscles he had built up in college were gradually turning into flab, and he looked quite dispirited.
Wang Chao wondered how much longer he would have to live like this; it felt so aimless.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Without needing to think, Wang Chao knew it must be his little sister coming over again to drop off Yiyi for a date. He opened the door and indeed found his little sister grinning at him. Yiyi saw Wang Chao and immediately jumped into his arms. Wang Chao smiled and picked her up while his little sister said, "Haha, treat your senior to a meal next time! I'm off to my date now! Ha!"
Wang Chao helplessly replied, "Do as you wish..."
Half an hour later, Wang Chao took Yiyi to the amusement park in the small town, which was right behind Yang Mengying's company.
Yiyi's favorite ride was the carousel; it was also inexpensive enough for Wang Chao's budget. If Yiyi had preferred something more extravagant, he truly wouldn't have been able to afford it. Lighting a cigarette, Wang Chao stood nearby watching Yiyi on the carousel when suddenly there was a commotion in the crowd.
Someone had dashed into the carousel area. Wang Chao looked over and saw that the person was covered in blood with bite marks all over one arm. Instead of avoiding the carousel, he charged toward it, targeting a chubby little boy on one of the horses. The boy cried out loudly upon seeing the approaching figure.
The man lunged at the boy, knocking him to the ground and began biting him relentlessly. In an instant, a large chunk of skin and flesh was torn away. Everything happened so quickly that no one had time to react; everyone was in shock. Then Wang Chao noticed several similar figures emerging from behind them, each moving strangely as if under some spell.
Suddenly, a thought flashed through Wang Chao's mind like a shooting star but vanished just as quickly. The more he thought about it, the more his head throbbed. He knew this wasn't the time for such thoughts; gripping the railing with one hand, he flipped over and landed directly in the area where the carousel had already been stopped by staff.
"Yiyi!" Wang Chao shouted, "Come here quickly!"
At this moment, Yiyi was remarkably calm. When she saw Wang Chao running toward her, she jumped down from the wooden horse and ran towards him. Wang Chao quickly embraced Yiyi, glancing around to see that numerous people were rushing in their direction. Many had already been knocked down by these crazed individuals. A word kept flashing through Wang Chao's mind to describe these people, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't recall it.
"Run! Run!" some shouted. "These people have gone mad; they're biting everyone!"
The amusement park was filled with children and the elderly, creating a chaotic scene. More and more people were being taken down by the unknown assailants. Wang Chao was swept up in the crowd, witnessing people fall to the ground. Holding Yiyi tightly, he felt an overwhelming sense of panic; he had never encountered anything so thrilling in his life. The crowd surged backward toward the rear exit, which was behind a tall building.
The office conditions here were poor, always filled with noise, but this time felt different.
Yang Mengying looked out the window and saw chaos outside—madmen attacking others indiscriminately. When she turned back, she was startled to see a group of bloodied individuals burst into the office. These people had blood on their lips and their clothes were soaked in it. Without distinguishing friend from foe, they lunged at everyone.
Yang Mengying screamed as she watched one of them bite into another person's throat, leaving no chance for survival. She was terrified and didn't understand what was happening in the world. In her moment of fear, her thoughts turned to Wang Chao. She rushed downstairs with the crowd, feeling lost and alone when suddenly a hand grabbed her arm.
Terrified, she turned around to find it was Wang Chao holding her.
"Wang Chao, how did you get here?" she asked in surprise.
Wang Chao pulled Yang Mengying along as they ran upstairs, explaining, "I brought Yiyi here to play but never expected this to happen. I still don't know what's causing all this chaos, but those outside have taken over everything. Anyone who gets bitten seems to turn into one of them—it's like a contagious disease spreading rapidly. Our only chance of survival is to go up."
Upon hearing this, Yang Mengying replied, "The office is full of those crazies; we just came down from there!"
Wang Chao couldn't worry about anything else at that moment; he just held onto Yang Mengying's arm and dashed upward. People were trying to come down while others were trying to go up, all jamming the stairway in utter disarray. Occasionally, someone would be pushed down and trampled underfoot, dying on the spot.
"Damn it! Get out of the way!" Wang Chao shouted, disregarding any sense of decorum as his life felt like it was slipping away. There were too many people crammed together with no place to escape; they were truly trapped with nowhere to go. At that moment, the crazies had already entered the building, and the sounds of screams, curses, and wails filled the air around them.
Suddenly, Wang Chao saw a few crazed individuals charging towards them. At that moment, one of Wang Chao's arms was being pulled by Yang Mengying, while he held Yiyi in his other arm, leaving him no way to escape!
